The Quality Council for General and Further Education and Training (Umalusi) is a statutory body mandated by legislation to quality assure education provision in General and Further Education and Training. This body seeks to appoint a suitable candidate with the relevant qualifications and experience to the following position. The Council intends to promote representivity through the filling of this position.
Umalusi seeks to appoint suitable persons as External Moderators for the following General Education and Training Certificate: Adult Basic Education and Training (GETC: ABET) Learning Areas. Subject experts, i.e. Educators/Lecturers, Subject Advisors, Curriculum Developers, Examiners and Moderators from all education and training sectors, who have the necessary knowledge, skills and experience in the assessment field, are invited to apply.

In order to be considered for appointment as an External Moderator, the applicants must:
• have a relevant qualification in education at a Bachelor’s Degree level or equivalent, with a major in the Subject/Learning Area that the applicant applies for;
• have extensive education and training experience in the particular field of study at a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET)/Nursing College, University, relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA), Community Education and Training (CET) and/or adult sector;
• have experience as an examiner, chief marker and/or internal moderator at the national level;
• be familiar with current assessment trends;
• have good communication, computer and writing skills;
• have the ability to plan and conduct moderation and verification without direct supervision; and
• have the ability to provide appropriate and necessary support, advice and guidance to examiners, chief markers and internal moderators.
Additional requirements:
• Knowledge of the applicable curriculum, assessment, related policies and guideline documents is essential;
• Ability and expertise to analyse policies and other relevant assessment documents will be an added advantage;
• Willingness to travel to fulfil the assigned moderation and verification tasks; and
• Valid driver’s licence.
Responsibilities:
• Moderation of question papers;
• Moderation of Site-Based Assessment (SBA) tasks;
• Moderation of SBA portfolios;
• Quality assurance of marking;
• Submission of reports to Umalusi on the quality of question papers, marking and internal assessment; and
• Provide feedback on the quality of the assessment system and make recommendations on how the assessment system can be improved.

PLEASE NOTE:
1. The prospective candidates should not currently serve as examiners or internal moderators of the same Learning Area and similar qualifications for the National Departments of Higher Education and Training or any private assessment body.
2. The external moderators will be expected to travel at pre-determined periods to execute moderation functions.
3. The successful applicants will be required to sign three-year contracts with Umalusi, which will be renewable annually, and agree to a statement of confidentiality.
