The Department of Performing Arts in the Faculty of Arts and Design has a permanent position for Technical Assistant at the Breytenbach and Rostrum Theatres.
Critical Functions:
• General theatre-laboratory assistance during pre-production and production phases.
• Administrative organization and support of the lecturers during rehearsals and theatre performances.
• Provide support in practical subjects conducted at the theatre.
• Knowledge in technical theatre (set building and welding)
• Knowledge of TUT policies, Performing Arts structure, and streams requirements.
• Be able to contribute to the lab development and maintenance of theatres.
• Be able to conduct filed trips.
• Be able to technically contribute to the festival activities.
• Proficient in using carpentry tools and equipment.
• Knowledge of construction techniques, materials, and safety practices.
Requirements:
• National Senior certificate (NQF 4) or equivalent.
• Drivers licence.
Experience:
• One year experience as an Artisan/Theatrical set builder.
• Proven record of technical and theater set building skills.
• Proven record of technical involvement of theatrical productions.
Knowledge and Skills:
• Understanding of Performing Arts and Technical Theatre principles
• Understanding of the current innovations in Performing Arts Technical Theatre
• Understanding of TUT procedure
• Working in theatre hours
• Using carpentry skills to create sturdy and safe structures that meet the aesthetic requirements of the production.
• Repairing any damage to sets or props promptly to ensure safety and continuity of the performance.
