Position Purpose
Assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient driving/handling of all different types of trains/locomotive consists (airbrake, vacuum, high speed, heavy haul and passengers) to ensure that the customers freight/cargo reaches its destination in good condition, on time, in order to enable the organisation to satisfy the customers’ needs.
 
Position Outputs
1. Sign on duty at designated workplace and be allocated duties to be performed for the duration of the shift.
• Determine which locomotive to be prepared.
• Obtain and place equipment on locomotive.
• Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
• Clean working area.
• Assist with starting up of locomotive as prescribed assist with locomotive brake tests.
• Couple locomotive.
• Sign on duty.
• Despatch locomotive.
2. Prepare locomotives.
• Determine which locomotive to be prepared.
• Obtain and place equipment on locomotive.
• Check and supplement prescribed equipment.
• Clean working area.
• Assist with starting up of locomotives as prescribed.
• Assist with locomotive brake tests.
3. Prepare communication equipment.
• Obtain radio’s/handsets/walkie talkie/telemeters when applicable.
• Check functionality of communication equipment.
4. Performs the pre – trip preparation of the Locomotives and the whole Train prior the departure to adhere to roadworthiness and train working rules and safety standards.
• Attach/detach vehicles according to works order in absence of guard personnel.
•Mount telemeters where necessary.
•Complete vehicle list and vacuum form.
•Mount train indicators.
•Examine train.
•Do brake test in conjunction with train driver.
5. Execute shunting activities in sidings and enroute according to directives to enhance safe working procedures.
• Obtain works order.
• Perform shunting/placing/removing of trucks as per works order.
• Update vehicle list.
• Place and clear load/empty trucks at siding.
6. Assist the train driver enroute to ensure the safe movement of the train from a required point to the destination, without delays or damage to locomotives, wagons, infrastructure track and other equipment, to ensure predictable service.
• Verbally compare signal positions and display with train driver.
• Observe proceeding trains patrol locomotives.
• Reset locomotive trip outs.
• Observe safe running of train.
• Protect train during incidents.
• Assist Train Driver during emergency circumstances.
7. Comply to safety standards and laid down instruction to ensure that he is well motivated and competent.
8. Provide accurate feedback timeously to the Train Driver regarding any incidents and deviations along the route.
9. Assist in performing various administration duties.
10. Complete the Train journal and submit to the Section Manager at sign – off after every shift to ensure timeous and accurate processing of monthly salary.

Qualifications and Experience
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Grade 12 with pure Mathematics and/ or Physical Science.

OTHER REQUITREMNETS:
• Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months.
• Physical hearing, vision, mental, fitness (to be verified through medical tests and related safety behavioural risk assessments).
• The operator shall not allow employees younger than 21 years of age to undertake Train driver or train control duties (SANS 3000, par 6.2.6.8).
The following minimum Trainee pre – requisite:
• The candidate should be a minimum of 1.6m tall.
• Psychomotor ability (to be assessed through Vienna Testing System (VTS standards).
• Ability to carry heavy objects.


FUNCTIONAL TRAINING:
• Be prepared to successfully undergo Train Assistant duties (theoretical and practical) so as to be certified to work independently as a Train Assistant.
• Be willing, prepared and capable to obtain a Train Assistant duties certificate (theoretical and practical) successfully and be certified to work independently as Train Assistant .

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Be prepared to undergo periodic medical surveillance and safety behavioural risk assessments during the selection process and every 12 months.

Position Purpose
• To define, develop and lead the Transnet Freight Rail (TFR) commercial strategy and pricing philosophy that will ensure that volumes, revenue, profitability, and growth targets are met and sustained in the long term in accordance with the business objectives.
• And identify, assess, and develop a comprehensive business development strategy & initiatives to enhance the existing business/clientele and generate new business opportunities to ensure that TFR remain competitive and grow according to its business and marketing strategic plans.
 
Position Outputs

COMMERCIAL
• Develop a sustainable commercial strategy;
• Develop and review a dynamic and clear pricing strategy informed by sound governance;
• Lead the development of TFR’s pricing policies, guidelines, pricing structures and tariff models including requirements for regulated business and going beyond costing;
• Lead and develop an integrated pricing model as per TFR and commercial requirements that inform pricing/tariff structures;
• Manage the TFR order book;
• Drive the Back to Rail strategy within the department;
• Develop and drive an effective Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategy aligned to the TFR EVP;
• Create organisational awareness of customer service values and lead continuous improvement efforts;
• Lead process improvements in contract development, contract execution, rand per ton management, and revenue protection management for the Commercial/Sales team;

CUSTOMER GROWTH AND FREIGHT BUDGET
• Lead and develop Customer and Segment Growth Strategies;
• Develop and implement value propositions for commodity specific logistics aligned with customer logistic needs and growth strategies;
• Lead development of freight logistics solutions that provide value driven end-to-end customer solutions;
• Develop and lead innovative and competitive commercial solutions including pricing & contracting;
• Identify risks and non-compliance in the management of commercial solutions;
• Lead the development and implementation of customer focused key enablers, including digital solutions, processes and tools to improve communication, ease of doing business with Transnet, as well as monitoring customer experience;
• Collaborate with the private sector logistics service providers in developing optimum end-to-end logistic solutions to clients;
• Lead stakeholder and customer- engagements and provide innovative commercial solutions of potential growth areas;
• Lead consultations with Chief Executive Officers, Senior Executives of Industry Bodies, Government Entities and Private Sectors in the development of commodity strategies that influence economic activity in SA and business development;
• Lead the alignment between Operating Divisions (OD) and Ltd with other relevant internal forums;
• Validate volume demand and commodity outlook to inform roll out plans and long-term demand and capacity planning;
• Develop strategic objectives that are aligned to key customers’ strategic objectives and business requirements;
• Provide a framework for Capacity Allocation, including criteria, and lead recommendations for adoption;
• Lead and conclude industry and customer negotiations;
• Set up guidelines for customer negotiations;
• Create and maintain strong professional relationships with key customers at top management level, ensuring clear understanding of the customer, business needs and market environment;
• Lead an integrated account strategy and plan in co-operation with other ODs;
• Implement methodologies that analyse customer performance against the contractual arrangement with collaborative and innovative solutions to close gaps;
• Monitor customer satisfaction levels; review survey results and draft mitigating strategies to address shortfalls;
• Establish a strategic crisis management mechanism; and

BUSINESS DEVEVELOPMENT
• Strategically lead new business development within Transnet Limited and with but not limited to Corporate clients, Consumer bodies, Business Associations, Railway Operators, Financial Institutions, Research Organisations and Africa Trade Associations;
• Participate in strategic marketing and operations planning with Transnet Senior Management;
• Provide business direction into TFR’s service/product life cycle planning, portfolio management and service/product development;
• Identify and implement mechanisms to ensure TFR delivers unique, superior products/services differentiated within marketplace and provides benefits and value to the clients;
• Implement best practice methodologies that will provide strategic analysis of new business opportunities;
• Develop, coordinate and implement business development plans designed to maintain and increase existing business and attract new opportunities based on Transnet Ltd & TFR’s market growth initiatives, targeted market segments analysis, competitor analysis, financial modelling and TFR’s potential to meet client needs with its services/products and resources;
• Develop new approaches and business models to improve TFR’s business;
• Lead and direct the total life-cycle process of new business pitches by developing business cases, market plans, integrated value clientele propositions to achieve optimum brand awareness and market penetration;
• Develop and deliver a high quality & tailored new business proposals prospective clients based on client’s business needs and capabilities of TFR in collaboration with relevant stakeholders;
• Lead prospective new business proposal negotiations until contract closure;
• Define business priorities that will strengthen, expand and drive market penetration;
• Develop business metrics and benchmarks for measuring performance that includes successes, economic and service inefficiencies, address organisational challenges that will free up more time slots and resources to grow other parts of the business;
• Build and nurture strategic relationships both internally and externally;
• Develop and manage employees within the Business Development department by instilling a high performance culture amongst employees through the performance management system; and
• Compile and manage operating budget for the department to ensure compliance to departmental targets and achieve cost containment by implementing and overseeing systems for cost control.
Qualifications and Experience
• B Degree in Marketing, Commerce or Commercial Law or related discipline, Minimum 12 years working experience in a large complex organisation, of which 10 years in a Senior Management role OR 12 years relevant demonstratable experience leading a significant Commercial function within a business, of which 8 years is at a Senior Management level in a large organisation with a complex operations environment;
• Post Graduate degree/qualification will be advantageous;
• Experience within both Commercial and Commercial Law functions added advantage; and
• Requirement of trust and honesty in the handling of finances as per the National Credit Act Amendment 19’.
