The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of: 
 
SENIOR FORECASTER - AVIATION 
Salary total package: Negotiable 
Centre: OR Tambo

Meteorological Observation: 
Ensure that aeronautical meteorological observations are carried out in line with the international and national requirements by amongst others monitoring their quality, availability and provision of trend forecasts. 
 
Forecasting and Warning Services: 
  • Supervise, generate and quality control aeronautical forecasts according to pre-determined time scales. 
  • Supervise, generate and quality control client specific products and services for commercial and general public. 
  • Assist with the preparation of weather reports in respect of aeronautical accident and incident investigation queries from relevant legislative authorities. 
  • Communicate aeronautical meteorological forecasts and services to relevant clients. 
 
Internal and External Customer Relations: 
  • Liaise with clients.
  • Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings. 
  • Promote the awareness of SAWS products and services to all stakeholders. 
  • Provide telephonic briefing 
  • Assist in the control of acquired stock levels required for operational activities. 
  • Assist in the effective use of assets and key infrastructure. 
  • Perform routine office administration practices including lodging claims, leave processing, overtime, transport admiration, periodic reporting, administration of registers etc. 
 
Training, Development and Knowledge Management: 
  • Assist in all training activities related to aeronautical meteorology within the organization. 
  • Provide mentorship and training to aeronautical, terrestrial forecasters. 
 
Total Quality Management: 
  • Develop and review aeronautical, terrestrial meteorological processes and procedures. 
  • Apply prevention and corrective action procedures on all findings related to aeronautical, terrestrial meteorological products and services. 
  • Promote a quality culture amongst the staff within the organization. 
  • Promote the SAWS Quality Policy and intergrade it into the day-to-day activities of the office 
  • Provide assistance during audits of the Regional Offices and sub-regional offices as required. 
  • Perform regular inspections to ensure all work done is according to documented requirements. 
  • Ensure that the work environment complies with legislative requirements relations to OHS. 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes: 
  • BSc Honours Degree in Meteorology or equivalent 
  • 5 years Meteorological experience. If no suitable candidate with 5 years’ experience, 3 years’ experience may be considered at the discretion of Head of the Department. 
  • ICAO AMF competency certificate 
  • WMO Standards 
  • Clear understanding of SAWS policies 
  • Ability to analyse and interpret weather charts, weather observations (surface and upper air) weather codes, satellite imagery and radar imagery. 
  • Basic understanding of Public Finance and Management Act 
  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends and public holidays 
  • Excellent corporate communications skills (written and verbal) 
  • Computer Skills (Ms Word, Excel, PowerPoint) 
  • Be able to respond well to pressure 
  • Own reliable transport 
  • Valid EB or Code 8 Drivers License is essential

SENIOR MANAGER: MARINE 
Salary total package: Negotiable

Job Summary: 
The Senior Manager is responsible for providing strategic leadership and guidance on the development and provision of marine meteorological products and services in compliance with the SAWS’ mandate and also in support of the entity’s revenue generation programmes. The manager also ensures that SAWS complies with the relevant legislation and prescripts as well as applicable standards and obligations. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
  • Responsible for the development and implementation of the SAWS Marine Strategy that ensures that SAWS meets its mandate, as well support its non-regulated revenue generation objectives. 
  • Manage the provision of marine products and services in compliance with the SAWS mandate as well as to key stakeholders such as Search and Rescue Teams for both commercial and recreational purpose. 
  • Manage the collection of marine meteorological observations from weather stations, marine-related observational equipment, vessels and metadata to the Global Telecommunication System, as well as the ingestion of these data to SAWS Numerical Weather Models (Data Assimilation) and the local database. 
  • Collaborate with other external stakeholders to expand the marine meteorology observation services along the South African coastline and remote Islands. 
  • Manage the marine forecasting and SOLAS obligations 
  • Collaborate with the Technical Services Team for the installation, commissioning, routine maintenance, and replacement of marine observation infrastructure. 
  • Manage the dissemination of marine related information to various platforms. 
  • Oversee deployment of donated marine surface and subsurface observational equipment. 
  • Prepare and submit marine related reports to the various stakeholders as and when required 
  • Collaborate with the Research and Business Development teams to identify opportunities in the marine space to ensure that SAWS develops and offers fit-for-purpose marine products and services. 
  • Provide support in the development of the Marine cost recovery model for SAWS. 
  • Develop mathematical/statistical techniques to quality control marine observational data. 
  • Manage the development of modelling capabilities in Marine related research. 
  • Responsible for the METAREA Coordinator functions to ensure compliance in the provision of SOLAS products with the IMO/WMO standards. 
  • Effectively lead and manage the department by maintaining a motivated team to deliver on the SAWS mandate within the allocated resources 
  • Participate at international level as an expert to develop guidance for Members to meet the service requirements through WMO/IMO Expert teams/Working Groups and in those platforms that for donations/sponsorships for marine programmes . 
 
Required Minimum Education/Training: 
  • Masters in Natural Sciences viz. Meteorology/Oceanography /Atmospheric Science 
  • A PhD is an added advantage 
 
Required Minimum Work Experience: 
  • At least 10 years’ experience in the Marine Meteorology environment. 
  • At least 3 years people management experience 
  • Experience in a public sector would be an added advantage
