Job Summary 
To address challenges associated with various consequences of atmospheric composition variations, air quality deterioration and to assure environmental sustainability – the SAWS is engaged in various aspects of atmospheric composition research, innovation and solution development activities. The aim of the SAWS–ACR team includes, but is not limited to, the generation of scientifically advanced, robust and quality-controlled atmospheric composition products and services which inform/support the general public, different environmental/economic sectors, and policy/decision makers. Accordingly, the SAWS–ACR team’s main focus area is the chemical state of the climate and its implications. The key scientific activities of the team encompass the development, implementation and optimization of various compositional numerical models, retrieval algorithms, sector-specific interlinking schemes, multivariate data blending (deploying modelling, ground observations and satellite retrievals) and analysis systems. Under these principal premises, the scientist will participate in research, scientific innovation and system development/implementations, operational and administrative activities. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
As SAWS–ACR team member (within the Research and Development department of SAWS), the appointed Scientist will be responsible for
  • Conduct research on computational development and implementation of atmospheric composition modelling and data analysis systems under the guidance of the lead scientist. 
  • Participate in the research, development, installation, upgrading, operationalization and maintenance of scientific systems relevant to the SAWS–ACR team. 
  • Participate in research programmes or projects related to the implementation of new compositional scientific systems, atmospheric composition variational and impact studies, and analysis of large datasets. 
  • Support the SAWS–ACR team in data analysis and interpretation, model verification and calibration, project reports as well as maintenance of atmospheric composition associated databases. 
  • Support the SAWS–ACR team in maintaining/fostering collaborations with stakeholders and strategic partners. 
  • Assist the production of scientifically robust and quality-controlled atmospheric composition related operational/once-off products and services for the public good, commercial, regulations and policies. 
  • Support the SAWS–ACR team on new research projects/programmes/initiatives undertaken in cooperation with national or international institutions. 
  • Participate in innovative programmes that are relevant to SAWS–ACR strategic needs and obligations. 
  • Keep abreast of the latest atmospheric composition technologies, systems and databases so as to improve overall productivity and service delivery. 
  • Assist the SAWS–ACR team in reporting, evaluating research needs, and developing new research proposals, publications, and presentations. 
  • Participate in promoting and enhancing the national/international positioning of ACR and SAWS through scientific engagements (presentations, meetings, workshops, etc). 
  • Participate in professional development programs. 
  • Participate in teamwork and collaborative efforts to meet targets. 
  • Support the SAWS–ACR team and research management in addressing/attending to ad hoc requests from internal or external stakeholders. 
  • Keep administrative processes associated with the position up-to-date (research management framework, reporting, etc.). 
  • Participate in activities related to the implementation and/or maintenance of the SAWS TQM system, ensuring quality output and customer satisfaction. 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes: 
  • An appropriate Honours degree in Meteorology/Atmospheric Sciences/Environmental Sciences 
  • Theoretical background and practical knowledge (research project participation experience) in the field of atmospheric physics/chemistry will serve as an advantage 
  • Experience in large dataset analysis and data management techniques 
  • Experience in atmospheric composition/air pollution aspects of remote sensing (either ground or spaceborne platforms, or both) 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Experience in presentation and reporting scientific outcomes 
  • Ability to meet project and administrative deadlines 
  • The ability to work in a team as well as individually 
  • Experience with Linux and UNIX operating systems, as well as background in programming (e.g., Fortran, R, Python, etc.) will be an added advantage

SENIOR SCIENTIST 
Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW)

Job Summary: 
The Senior Scientist: Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) will be responsible for various trace gas research activities and assisting the Senior Scientist GAW in this regard. A special focus will be on data quality and QA/QC procedures according to WMO GAW protocols. The Scientist will participate in research, scientific, operational and administrative activities within his/her section. The suitable candidate should have at least university level project experience in weather-climate sciences, atmospheric/air pollution aspects of remote sensing and possess good communication skills necessary to contribute to the advancement of the SAWS GAW mandate. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
As a Senior Scientist: GAW within the Research and Innovation Department of SAWS, the incumbent will be responsible for: 
  • Conduct research and innovation under the guidance of the Lead Scientist, to ensure sustained and continuous long-term systematic monitoring and processing/evaluation of atmospheric chemistry data within the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) programme, towards the support of the SAWS operations and services, in order to meet the SAWS strategic goals and obligations. 
  • Participate in the research, development, installation, upgrading or maintenance of the scientific instruments/systems relevant to atmospheric chemistry monitoring and research at the Cape Point GAW station. 
  • Participate in research programmes, projects or activities related to greenhouse gas (GHG) observations. 
  • Assist the senior scientist in GHG data analysis, calibrations and verification as well as maintenance of data sets. 
  • Participate in the support of all relevant GHG products and systems. 
  • Support Lead scientist any new projects undertaken, both in cooperation with other SAWS divisions and sections and well as with external institutions. 
  • Keep abreast of latest GHG measurement technology, methods and techniques so as to improve overall productivity and service delivery. 
  • Assist Lead scientist to publish and present research findings to others on a national and international level. 
  • Participate in enhancing and building the national/international positioning of SAWS through scientific collaboration and engagement (presentations, meetings, workshops, etc) 
  • Support Lead scientist to foster strategic partnerships and collaborations with stakeholders, collaborators 
  • Support and attend to ad hoc Supply Chain Management requests. 
  • Keep administrative processes up to date (Research Management Framework, monthly reporting etc.) 
  • Participate in all activities related to the implementation and/or maintenance of the SAWS SHEQ system, ensuring quality output and customer satisfaction 
  • Support and attend to ad-hoc administrative requests. 
  • Ensure and contribute to the GAW unit SHE Quality requirements of SAWS. 
  • Working knowledge of troubleshooting technical instrumentation (including IT related issues). 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes: 
  • An appropriate Masters degree in the Atmospheric Sciences/ Meteorology/ Environmental /Physical or Chemical sciences 
  • At least 2-5 years proven scientific experience Knowledge and research experience in the field of Atmospheric Sciences/ Meteorology/ Chemistry/Physics or Environmental Sciences will serve as an advantage. 
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Experience in the operation of analytical equipment (GC or air quality instruments) 
  • Ability to meet project and administrative deadlines 
  • The ability to work in a team as well as individually 
  • Ability to work with MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint 
  • Willingness to undertake further study e.g. PhD 
  • Valid Code 08 drivers licence 
  • Knowledge of programming/coding in any language such as Matlab, R, Python, SQL will be an added advantage

FORECASTING INTERNSHIP / POSTGRADUATE CERTITIFCATE IN WEATHER FORECASTING (REF.WS12/10/2023), 
The South African Weather Service invites graduates who are in possession of an honours degree in Meteorology or Atmospheric sciences with at least mathematics on second year university level and physical sciences on first year university level to apply for a one-year training internship in forecasting at the head office of the South African Weather Service in Pretoria. The qualification must also include the required dynamical courses as prescribed by the World Meteorological Organization. This course will start 29 January 2024 . The forecasting offices where forecasters possibly can be appointed are: Pretoria, OR Tambo International Airport, Bloemfontein, Durban, Port Elizabeth, and Cape Town.
