Job Summary:
A Lead Scientist is primarily responsible for research in the field of marine science, product development to support operational marine models and functions, continuous enhancement and maintenance of marine weather forecasting systems, development and improvement of marine standard operating procedures and ensuring compliance with marine related national and international standards. The Lead Scientist is also responsible for relationship-building at the national, regional and to some degree, international level. The role will be leading a team.
Key Performance Areas:
• Provide scientific and strategic leadership to the Marine Research Unit.

• Participate in support of relevant operational meteorological systems.
• Carry out all administrative functions attached to the post including the supervision of subordinates and the scientific mentoring of colleagues.

• Continue self-development and stay current/relevant with new developments in the field of Oceanography and marine Meteorology.
• Coordinate all activities and functions within the marine community such DEAT, SAMSA, Islands teams, buoys etc.
• Oversee and manage all marine-related assets.
• Ensure that all project deliverables as outlined in the performance agreement are timely met.
• Conduct performance contracting and assessments with Senior Scientist and Junior Scientists. Have an understanding and application of SAWS policies, PFMA, and any other applicable regulatory frameworks.
Required Minimum Education/Training:
• The ideal candidate should have at least a PhD or be enrolled for a PhD in Meteorology, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Sciences or marine related sciences.
Required Minimum Work Experience:
• Minimum 5 years’ experience in a marine-related environment.
• Extensive experience in building and running numerical fluid dynamic models (ocean or atmosphere). Work experience forming part of Msc/PhD qualification will not be considered.
• Excellent communication skills both written and verbal. Ability to work in a team.
• Candidate should have adequate experience working on successful projects and writing quality research proposals for funding.
• Substantial applied experience with scientific computing using languages such as MATLAB and Python.
• Experience in the Linux operating environment and scripting within this system
• Proven project management skills in a team leader capacity.
• Evidence of relevant peer reviewed publications, lead/co-author in at least 3 scientific papers.

Job summary:
The Office Supervisor is primarily responsible for managing the sub-Regional Office and in so doing ensure that the office fulfils its intended function. This intended function is to manage the collection, maintenance, quality control of information from Meteorological Observations equipment, administer human capital and financial management within the Office.

Job summary:
The Office Supervisor is primarily responsible for managing the sub-Regional Office and in so doing ensure that the office fulfils its intended function. This intended function is to manage the collection, maintenance, quality control of information from Meteorological Observations equipment, administer human capital and financial management within the Office.
Key Performance Areas/Responsibilities
• Manage all activities at the Weather Observation Office in a cost effective manner while conforming to prescribed standards.
• Execute all international standards as prescribed by WMO and ICAO.
• Provide observation reports in the timelines requested by the Department or Client.
• Responsible for accuracy of reports and quality control of data.
• Provide information to Scientists and Forecasters.
• Provide leadership to Meteorological Technicians.
• Develop new techniques and establishment new methodologies and processes in field to improve on the efficiency in the office.
• As inventory controller and chief user clerk - provisioning, optimally plan and maintain control of all assets regarding the office. Assist regional manager on request and manage petty cash.
• Represent the South African Weather Service at meetings as requested by clients or regional manager.
• Coordinate with regional offices and AWC to ensure that the office runs efficiently.
• Assist with the implementation and requirements of the SAWS TQM system
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• Grade 12 with Maths and Science as well as a Weather Observers certificate.
• 5 years’ experience as Meteorological Technician of which 2 years’ must be in a supervisory role.
• Advanced knowledge of weather observation tools and computer skills.
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret written requests for data and information.
• Ability to provide quality weather observations.
• Ability to calibrate and install weather instruments.
• Understanding of all-weather sensing equipment.

Job summary:
The meteorological technician conducts Meteorological observations performed in region. Within the region there are additional responsibilities assigned to this job, these being necessary to ensure operational efficiency of infrastructure that assists the Meteorological Observation network/s. The officer is essentially responsible for maintenance, upgrade and calibration of meteorological observation network.
Maintenance of equipment:
• Validation and verification of equipment
• Conduct reactive and preventative maintenance
• Replacement of faulty equipment
• Assist in controlling equipment from technical services centre with emphasis on quality control and management of stock
• Perform METAR, SPECI and SYNOP coded Meteorological observations
• Perform upper air ascents as part of upper air observations
Internal and External Customer Relations:
• Liaise with clients as per office plan.
• Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings as per plan.
Total Quality Management
• Apply prevention and corrective action procedures on all findings related to weather observation.
• Promote a quality culture amongst the staff within the office.
• Promote the SAWS Quality Policy and intergrade it into the day-to-day activities of the office
• Provide assistance during audits of the regional office as required.
• Perform regular inspections to ensure all work done is according to documented requirements.
• Ensure that the work environment complies with legislative requirements relations to OHS.
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• A Grade 12 Certificate with Maths and Science.
• Weather Observers certificate.
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret written request for weather data and information.
• Knowledge of international standards such as WMO and ICAO. Advanced knowledge of observation tools.
• A valid code 08 driver’s license.
