The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of: 
 
METEOROLOGICAL TRAINER: REGIONAL TRAINING CENTRE 
Salary Total Package: R301 142 – R419 888

Centre: Centurion Job Summary: 
The position of Meteorological Technician Trainer is mainly responsible to facilitate meteorological training within the South-African Weather Service (SAWS) Regional Training Centre (RTC). Meteorological training includes theoretical and practical training based on the Basic Instruction Package for Meteorological Technicians (BIP-MT) of the WMO, comprising of Meteorological concepts, circulations Coding synoptic and aviation messages, as well as WMO competencies, quality control of climate data and research related training. Training will be conducted according to the specifications of the qualifications: Occupational Certificate: Meteorological Technician, Occupational Certificate: Aviation Meteorological Observer and the National Certificate: Weather Observations. The incumbent will also conduct continuous training of meteorological personnel within SAWS and beyond. The Meteorological Trainer is further expected to develop and enhance the courses according to WMO qualification and competency requirements, ICAO competency requirements, and the needs of internal and external stakeholders. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
  • Deliver theoretical lectures and practical training to students of the Regional Training Centre 
  • Develop and enhance courses of own responsibility within the National Certificate: Weather Observations of SAWS and to assist in other courses of the National Certificate: Weather 
  • Observations, when required 
  • Design, develop and deliver online, face to face or blended learning courses to commercial clients 
  • Design, develop and deliver short courses and blended courses for the continuous training of personnel in Meteorology. 
  • Transfer all courses of responsibility onto the Moodle distance learning platform for online training delivery and keep them updated. 
  • Manage the administration of courses of own responsibility, including commercial courses, on the SAWS online learning platform. 
  • Receive and respond to meteorological enquiries. 
  • Identify risks within RTC and needs for procurement, etc. 
  • Network with other external stakeholders, especially training institutions, and with internal stakeholders, where applicable. 
  • Actively participate in the continuous training/training needs analysis of Meteorological Technicians in South Africa, South African Development Community (SADC) region and beyond 
  • Administrative duties, including training needs analysis, student and monthly training reports sent to the Qualification Manager: Observations. 
  • Knowledge of all Regional Training Centre regulations, WMO competency requirements for Meteorological Technicians, as well as South African National Qualification Framework prescripts under the relevant Quality Council. 
  • Stay abreast with developments in the meteorological environment. 
  • Perform scientific research in the field of interest, to become a specialist in a certain Meteorological field. 
  • Act as research leader for students within the National Certificate: Weather Observations course. 
  • Participate in Assessor and Moderator training and any other training required as per personal development plan. 
  • Assist to maintain the Total Quality Management platform of RTC with respect to courses of own responsibility and for other areas when required to do so. 
  • Be actively involved in other research and international programmes because of the person’s expertise. 
  • Represent the Regional Training Centre in an area of specialization on the activities of Regional and International Meteorological bodies when required to do so. 
  • The incumbent shall keep abreast with the developments in SAQA and relevant Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) as well as the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) and be actively involved with the above-mentioned process. 
  • As part of a WMO recognised RTC, stay abreast with the latest developments in the field of Meteorological Technician such as all relevant Meteorological Technician competencies to be able to give effective training. 
 
Minimum Requirements: 
  • An appropriate 4-year tertiary qualification in Atmospheric Sciences or Meteorology, i.e. a BSc (Hons) in Meteorology or Atmospheric Sciences. 
  • A minimum of 2 years’ work experience within the meteorological observation practices. 
  • Excellent knowledge and proficiency in weather observations, including Aviation Observer Competencies, and quality control of climate data. 
  • Fluency in English. 
  • Knowledge of electronics would be an added advantage.

Summary:
The position of Personal Assistant to the Executive – Weather Climate Service (WCS) is mainly responsible to provide professional and efficient secretarial and administrative support to the Executive. Maintaining executive’s diary and arranging meetings, conferences etc. Attending meetings and taking minutes. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
KPI 1 Diary Management 
  • Manages the executive’s diary and schedules meetings and where applicable, book meeting rooms accordingly. 
  • Drafts meeting agendas and ensure the timeous distribution of meeting packs 
  • Accurate minute taking and timeous distribution of these and matters arising from meetings 
  • Follows up on action items from meetings to ensure completion within stipulated deadlines. 
  • Manage office in absence of Executive. 
 
KPI 2 Hosting and Meeting Coordination 
  • Professionally greeting of the executive’s visitors on arrival at SAWS and escorting them to the Office/Boardroom. 
  • Organising the requisite refreshments for meetings where necessary 
 
KPI 3 Administration/Office Support 
  • Managing the executive’s inbox, screen all correspondence and action them where appropriate and where relevant, ensures that the executive actions the items that need his attention. 
  • Answering and screening telephone calls and where applicable, forward these to the relevant employees. 
  • Accurate record keeping and filing of documents. Ensuring that classified and confidential documents are kept safely. 
  • Preparing reports, presentations, Board packs and correspondence accurately and swiftly. 
  • Typing of official letters, memorandums, and general correspondence for internal and external purposes. 
  • Coordinates logistical arrangements for the Executive in line with procurement process. 
  • Develops a database of contacts and updates regularly to ensure current information. 
 
KPI 4 Travel Arrangements 
  • Manage the executive’s (or any other team member) travelling arrangements including – flights, accommodation, car hire, itinerary etc. 
  • Assist with the processing and submission of travelling claims the Executive’s return.
 
KPI 5 Stakeholder Management 
  • Acting as the point of contact among executives, employees, clients, and other external partners 
  • Coordinate the function’s compliance and annual submissions e.g., Declarations of Interest, requests from auditors, performance agreements and assessments, APP reports etc. 
 
Minimum Requirements: 
  • A National Diploma in administration or secretarial qualification (NQF 6). 
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience in an executive support role. 
  • Knowledge and experience related to Board submissions will also be an added advantage.

SENIOR METEOROLOGICAL TECHNICIAN (DISASTER RISK REDUCTION) 
TCTC Salary range: R295 600.00 - R356 200.00

Job Summary: 
The Senior Meteorological Technician provides technical expertise in the maintenance of meteorological instruments assigned to the Disaster Risk Reduction unit. He/She is also responsible for conducting daily monitoring and evaluations of data quality from surface land and upper-air stations within SADC that are affiliated with WMO standards. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
Products, Services Delivery / Infrastructure maintenance 
  • Collect Meteorological and climate data and submit reports to the relevant stakeholders. 
  • Install, maintain, and where possible, repair as well as assist with upgrades of weather observation equipment. 
  • Continuously monitor the performance of equipment and perform routine and non-routine maintenance. 
  • Perform quality control of meteorological data before submitting to SAWS database 
  • Monitor and evaluate SADC-WMO affiliated data quality for surface land and upper air stations daily. 
 
Innovation, Process Improvement & Revenue Generation 
  • Analysis of available meteorological and climatological data. 
  • Suggest measures to improve data quality and or availability. 
 
Administration, Governance, Risk & Compliance 
  • Perform routine office administration practices including lodging claims, leave processing, completion of attendance registers, transport administration, periodic reporting, administration of registers, etc. 
  • Compliance with designated national and international standards. 
  • Maintain the SHEQ (Safety, Health Environment and Quality) system. 
  • Monitor the Risk Register and ensure the implementation of identified risks mitigation actions. 
  • Participate in various office audits and ensure that all audit findings are addressed. 
  • Manage roster rotations and duty sheets. 
  • Minimal supervisory duties over junior Meteorological Technicians 
  • Assist in developing and implementing SOPs for departmental operations. 
  • Assist with supervising the performance in the absence of Chief Met Tech.
