The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
Senior Technologist
Salary total package: Negotiable

Job summary:
To provide Technical service with specialised knowledge in operating, maintaining and repairing of infrastructure including performance analysis, Design assessment, document and process review.
Key Performance Areas:
• Assembling and installation of electronic weather systems.
• Monitor and maintain weather infrastructure.
• Maintain and repair RF equipment, lightning and upper air observation network.
• Develop and update technical specifications.
• Support regional technologists and ICT infrastructure.
• Calibration and verification of observation equipment.
• Execute plan maintenance activities.
• Utilize work order system for maintenance activities.
• Compile and update regional spares inventory.
• Compile and provide feedback on regional queries and spares requirements.
• Undertake regional audits and compile reports for maintenance and repairs.
• Compile, analyse and submit monthly, quarterly and annual reports.
• Prepare equipment and performance reports.
• Compile, analyse and submit equipment performance reports.
• Compile activity analysis and reports.
• Compile risks, safety and TQM performance reports and action plans.
• Document SOP and SWP.
• Develop action plans related to non-conformance.
• Supervise Junior Technologists and Technicians
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• BTech in Electrical Engineering (with specialization in Telecommunication) or equivalent qualification with relevant working experience.
• Registration with ECSA will be an advantage.
• A minimum of 5 years’ experience in the design, development and maintenance of processes and knowledge of software programs.
• Exposure to maintenance planning and support services.
• Excellent knowledge of Microsoft Windows and Linux Operating Systems.
• Good communication, interpersonal and analytical skills are essential.
• People management skills with proven experience at Supervisory / Team Leadership level.
• Must demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, coaching and mentoring.
• A valid code 08 shift gear (manual) driver’s licence with own transport is essential.
• Prepare equipment and performance reports.
• Compile, analyse and submit equipment performance reports.
• Compile activity analysis and reports.
