The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:

Job Summary:
The candidate for this position has to play a leading role to guide and lead research in the development and implementation of innovative methods in operational regional and coastal oceanography • This includes the utilisation of mathematical prediction models
Key Performance Areas:
• Initiate, plan and conduct research projects related to marine hindcasting and forecasting
• Advise in developing and maintaining the strategic direction of high resolution regional and coastal marine forecasting at SAWS in line with the international standards and practices • Develop and nurture external collaboration with national and international institutions relevant to marine research activities
• Represent SAWS, where appropriate, on national or international scientific panels/committees or expert groups in an expert capacity presenting research finding at workshops and conferences
• Participate in the development and support of relevant operational oceanographic forecasting systems
• Contribute actively in the scientific mentoring and development of younger scientists
• Expected to act as scientific lecturer in-house and at university level training courses
• Must be able to work under pressure and deliver on time.
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• An appropriate PhD Degree in Oceanography or Applied Mathematic with at least 5– 10 years or equivalent working experience
• Essential: Substantial experience with software programming languages e.g. Matlab, Python, Delft 3D, SWAN and Wave Watch 3
• Experience in the LINUX operating environment and scripting within this system
• Scripting in Python or Matlab and the use of remote sensing and in situ measurements for numerical model calibration and validation
• Proven experience and knowledge in high resolution coastal numerical wave and flow modelling
• Proven experience with client liaison and the ability to attract and sustain revenue
• Proven project management skills and successful project completion in a team leader capacity
• Evidence of a peer reviewed publication and report record relevant to this field
• Ability to cope with several projects at any one time and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively with others.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Expected to act as scientific lecturer in-house and at university level training courses
