The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. South African Weather Service (SAWS) strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence providing innovative solutions to ensure a weather-smart region, sustainable development and economic growth.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
Senior Meteorological Technician
Salary: Total Salary Package Level 6
Centre: De Aar Weather Centre
(Ref: WS04/032020)
Job Summary: To maintain SAWS regional meteorological observation and equipment
Key Performance Areas
• Provide observation reports in the timelines requested by the Department
• Provide information that goes to Scientists and Forecasters
• Provide special reports for changes in the weather
• Provides mentorship and leadership to newly appointed Meteorological technicians
• Develop new techniques and establishment of new methodologies and processes in this field
• Assist with the implementation and compliance to the requirements of the SAWS Quality Management System
• Install, manage, and maintain observational meteorological equipment, which involves travelling to remote locations within the province
• Daily quality control of meteorological observational data
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
• A Grade 12 Certificate with Maths and Science
• Weather Observers certificate and an AMO competency certificate
• Two years’ experience in observation
• Ability to read, analyse and interpret written request for data and information
• Knowledge of South African Weather Service policies and procedures
• Knowledge of international standards such as WMO and ICAO
• Advanced knowledge of observation tools
• A valid driver’s license is essential
