The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of: 
 
ICT Remote Sensing Specialist
Salary: Negotiable

Job Summary: 
The Remote Sensing Specialist is responsible for monitoring and configuring sensors for the collection, analysis and display of climate and weather-related data from the SAWS observation network. 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
• Design and implement remote sensing techniques for weather and climate related data. 
• Provide technical support for the acquisition of data from the SAWS observation network. 
• Monitor data obtained from remote sensing systems to ensure meaningful results.
• Conduct research and recommend new solutions for remote sensing techniques. 
• Ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations and standards. 
• Maintain good working relationships with internal and external stakeholders. 
 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes: 
• A Bachelor’s degree in the relevant field or equivalent 
• Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a Remote Sensing Specialist role or similar 
• Knowledge of remote sensing and data processing techniques 
• Knowledge of remote sensing software used in the South African Weather Service 
• Knowledge of acquiring data from weather and climate related instruments or sensors (Radar, Satellite, Automatic Weather Stations, Lightning Detection Networks, etc.) 
• Background in Programming (C/C++/C#, Python, Java, etc.) 
• Knowledge of Windows and Linux operating systems 
• Knowledge of communication networks 
• Demonstrate strong personal and organizational leadership skills 
• Excellent communication, interpersonal and analytical skills are essential 
• Must demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning and mentoring 
• The incumbent must be to travel nationally and internationally 
• Availability after hours is a requirement
