SOUTH AFRICAN WEATHER SERVICE (SAWS)
 
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) and is governed by a Board. The organisation is an authoritative voice for weather and climate related services in South Africa and is a member of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) to fulfil a range of international obligations of the government. South African Weather Service (SAWS) strives to be a Weather and Climate Centre of Excellence providing innovative solutions to ensure a weather-smart region, sustainable development and economic growth.
 
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) is therefore seeking to appoint an efficient and enthusiastic person to undertake the role of:
 
Chief Scientist: Marine Research, Infrastructure and Product Development
Salary: Negotiable

Centre: Cape Town Weather Office
 
Job Summary:
The candidate is to play a leading research and development role, focused on regional/coastal operational marine meteorology/oceanography. This will include the utilization of numerical models.
 
 
Key Performance Areas:
 Plan, initiate and conduct research projects related to marine hindcasting and forecasting.
 Participate in the development and support of relevant operational oceanographic forecasting systems.
 Advise in developing and maintaining the strategic direction of high resolution marine forecasting at SAWS in line with international standards and practices.
 Develop and nurture external collaboration with national and international institutions relevant to marine research activities.
 Represent SAWS, where appropriate, on national or international scientific panels, committees or expert groups in an expert capacity, presenting research findings at workshops and conferences.
 Contribute actively in the scientific mentoring and development of younger scientists.
 Assist with appropriate administrative tasks pertaining to the job level and associated responsibilities.
 Be able to work under pressure and deliver on time.
 
 
Minimum Requirements and Attributes:
 PhD degree in Oceanography, Coastal Engineering, Applied Mathematics or other relevant discipline.
 5-10 years’ experience will be an added advantage.
 Substantial applied experience with scientific computing using languages such as MATLAB and Python.
 Experience in a Linux computing and scripting environment.
 Proven experience in building and running numerical models such as Delft 3D, SWAN, Wave Watch 3, ROMS, NEMO.
 Proven experience delivering on commercial projects. The incumbent will maintain a working relationship with the Commercial Department and Client Liaison Officer.
 Possess project management and leadership skills.
 Proven track record of relevant research output including publications and human capital development.
 Ability to cope with several projects at any one time and the ability to work both independently and cooperatively.
 Excellent oral and written communication skills.
