Job Summary:
To provide legal support, advice and legal opinions on all legal matters including but not limited to, contracts, litigation, labour, compliance and corporate legal, under the supervision of the Legal Manager.
Key Performance Areas:
- Provide legal support, advise and legal opinions on various legal matters, to minimize and control risks to the SAWS.
- Provide assistance to ensure that legal documents and other contractual documents are properly drafted, negotiated, reviewed, interpreted and vetted.
- Maintain an updated and accurate register of all SAWS’s contracts drafted, negotiated, reviewed, interpreted and vetted by the Legal Unit.
- Conduct research on requisite legislation and case law when required.
- Co-ordinate and manage litigation matters for and against the SAWS
- Liaise and attend consultations with and instruct the SAWS external legal service providers (attorneys)
- Attend Court
- Negotiate, review, interpret, vet and draft Settlement Agreements.
- Review pleadings from external legal service providers
- Assist with the dispute resolution in accordance with the SAWS policies and the legislative framework.
- Where necessary, represent the company at various levels dispute resolution mechanisms, e.g. Bargaining Forum, the CCMA etc., with the aim of managing the SAWS’ interests.
Required Minimum Education/Training:
- LLB or other relevant Legal Degree
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate (Bar Council Admission)
Required Minimum Work Experience:
- At least 3 (three) years post-articles/ admission experience

Job summary:
The Senior Forecaster is a shift-worker primarily responsible for forecasting and monitoring of weather, producing of weather forecasting products as well as severe weather warnings.
S/He is also required to provide a supervisory and technical oversight of weather forecasting activities performed in the office and in regional forecasting offices.
Forecasting and Warning Services:
- Supervise, generate and quality control public and marine weather forecasts according to pre-determined time scales. These include commercial products and services.
- Communicate public weather forecasts and severe weather warnings in different media platforms.
Internal and External Customer Relations:
- Liaise with clients as per office plan.
- Represent SAWS at Stakeholder meetings and other forums.
- Promote the awareness of SAWS products and services to all stakeholders.
Administration:
- Perform routine office administration practices including periodic reporting, leave processing, administration of registers, transport administration, etc.
- Assist in the control of acquired stock levels required for operational activities.
- Assist in the effective use of assets and key infrastructure.

- Ability to analyse Numerical Weather Prediction and Ensemble Prediction System products to produce weather forecasts and warnings.
- Comprehensive understanding of Impact-based forecasting.

Job Summary:
The Climate Data Unit within the Climate Service Department is responsible for archiving, capturing, and quality-controlling various climate-related data sets coming from various SAWS measuring platforms. The incumbent will be responsible for quality-controlling rainfall data, archiving the returns, capturing climate data and quality control, and scanning old historical climate and rainfall returns.
Key Performance Areas:
- Be responsible for the archiving of rainfall data and returns,
- Take part in data recovery programs by capturing data and metadata and scanning various documents,
- Participate in the quality control of historical and real-time climate data from the SAWS surface observation network,
- Have knowledge of observation methods and the inter-relationships of different climate variables,
Required Minimum Education/Training:
- A Weather Observers certificate or equivalent qualification in meteorology or climatological or related fields.
Required Minimum Work Experience:
- A minimum of 2 years of work experience within a meteorological or similar scientific environment.
Technical and Behavioural Competencies Required
- Ability to read, analyse and interpret climate data and information,
- Excellent computer skills, especially excel,
- The ability to work in crystal reports or SQL and the GIS environment will be an added advantage,
- Good communication, interpersonal and analytical skills are essential.
