Job Description
  • Initiates and manages research projects relating to vegetable insect pests, by ensuring successful completion of research projects in compliance with set standards, client needs/specifications, within budget and on time.
  • Experimental design, timeous execution, data capturing, data analysis and reporting of project deliverables according to scientific standards and in line with overall Corporate Strategy of the ARC.
  • Actively sources and secures new research opportunities, assists with identifying new business opportunities and capable of securing external funding.
  • Manage allocated resources (facilities, manpower, material, and equipment) to ensure efficient deployment and utilisation of resources.
  • Disseminates technology through peer-reviewed scientific articles, popular publications, manual productions, radio and TV talks, and other marketing events.
  • Contribute to diagnostic and advisory services.
 
Job Requirements
  • PhD in Entomology / Nematology / Plant Pathology or related field.
  • At least three years’ practical research experience in entomology, post master’s level.
  • Experience in managing a research laboratory and/or an insectary.
  • Experience in crop pest research (applied and laboratory).
  • Experience in field excursions and pest scouting.
  • Experience in designing and executing field trials will be an advantage.
  • Knowledge of integrated pest management will be an advantage.
  • Authored or co-authored a minimum of two peer reviewed publications relevant to the position.
  • Evidence of popular article publications and research presentations will be an added advantage.
  • Evidence of performing research independently, achievement of objectives and targets and effective reporting.
  • Valid driver’s licence.

  • Authored or co-authored a minimum of two peer review publications relevant to the position.

Job Description
  • Compiling and executing technical activity plans for the implementation of research projects in Plant Pathology, with a focus on bacterial diseases of vegetables, industrial crops and medicinal plants.
  • Coordinate activities and assist with the molecular identification of bacterial cultures, inoculum preparation and greenhouse and field trials evaluation.
  • Compile and present basic training material (presentations) for students and smallholder farmers.
  • Compose popular articles about basic aspects of plant diseases.
  • Manage project facilities, material and equipment and ensure optimal utilization of resources.
  • Compile technical reports when required.
  • Develop technical capacity at an appropriate level.
  • Assist in rendering technical or other research services at a national level.
 
Job Requirements
  • A National Diploma in Microbiology / Plant Pathology or related field.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Microbiology / Plant Pathology or related field will be an added advantage.
  • Two years relevant experience in technical aspects of bacteriology and/or general plant pathology.
  • Experience in disease diagnosis and pathogen identification will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in molecular biology and basic bioinformatic analysis will be an added advantage.
  • Good verbal and written communication and presentation skills.
