About Vaalputs 
Vaalputs established in 1986 as the national, near surface, radioactive waste disposal facility that serves South Africa’s needs for disposing of low-level radioactive waste generated by nuclear industrials. It is situated in the Northern Cape about 100km south of Springbok and is currently managed and operated by Nuclear Liabilities Management department (NLM) of Necsa. The National Radioactive Waste Disposal Institute (NRWDI) is in the process of obtaining a nuclear installation license for Vaalputs and, once this has been accomplished, the incumbent will be reporting within the NRWDI structures.
 
Job Profile: 
Responsible for the day to day electrical, civil and mechanical maintenance of the facility, equipment and machinery
 
 
Key Performance Areas: 
  • Schedule, implement and maintain a preventative maintenance system for Vaalputs; 
  • Supervise the Vaalputs Maintenance team; 
  • Report maintenance status in monthly and quarterly reports; 
  • Supervise activities of maintenance staff; 
  • Train personnel in maintenance procedures and applicable regulatory and statutory requirements; 
  • Control maintenance budget expenditure; 
  • Perform scheduled inspections and maintenance on statutory equipment according to OHS Act requirements; 
  • Execute preventative maintenance on facility buildings, plant and equipment; 
  • Develop and review work instructions for maintenance activities; 
  • Participate in Safety and Integrated Management meetings; 
  • Serve as a member of Vaalputs Emergency Team and Accident Investigation team; and 
  • Ensure compliance with all instructions, NNR License and applicable SHEQ requirements.

Key Knowledge and Skills: 
  • Knowledge of maintenance systems.

  • Preferably a valid code EC driver’s license. 
  • Medically fit to be registered as an occupationally exposed worker. (Noise, chemical, working on heights, working in confined spaces, etc.) 
 
Qualifications and Experience: 
  • Minimum N3 qualification and Trade Test. 
  • Qualified Artisan (Electrical/ Millwright/ Mechatronics/ Mechanics). 
  • Minimum 5 years’ working experience in a technical environment.
  • Wireman’s license for electrical installations will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum 2 years’ supervisory experience. 
  • Experience as Competent Person: Machinery in terms of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993. 
  • Experience in planning, scheduling and executing tasks and projects efficiently and cost-effectively. 
  • Experience in writing procedures, instructions and reports.
