POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of this role is to ensure the effective upkeep, security, and operational readiness of the building facilities by conducting daily inspections, monitoring equipment and assets, coordinating maintenance activities and ensuring compliance with OHS and regulatory standards. The role also supports uninterrupted operations by providing first-line response to facility issues, facilitating secure access for contractors, and maintaining accurate records to ensure a safe, efficient, and well-managed environment.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • A Senior Certificate (Grade 12 Matric).
  • Generator and UPS Training certification.
  • A minimum of five (5) years’ relevant work experience as a Caretaker.
 
TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES:
  • Understanding of standard procedures for maintenance, access, and facility security.
  • Familiarity with relevant industry regulations and compliance standards.
  • Strong knowledge of facilities management processes, equipment, and services.
  • Understanding of accurate documentation practices to support audit trails and maintenance records.
  • Ability to de-escalate disputes and resolve issues calmly and effectively.
  • Ability to evaluate information, identify problems, and recommend practical solutions.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Operational:
  • Monitor facilities daily for maintenance defects and report all issues to the Service Desk as per internal procedures.
  • Ensure all facilities registers are completed accurately and records are maintained.
  • Secure facilities by controlling access, communicating incidents, and escalating issues promptly.
  • Maintain cleanliness and order in all facilities at all times.
  • Provide access for pre-authorised sub-contractors to perform maintenance.
  • Assist in emergency problem solving and incident response.
  • Check cloakrooms and common areas regularly.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance inspections.
  • Assist in churn projects (e.g., moving of furniture and minor relocations).
  • Coordinate and monitor sub-contractor work to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Adhere to all OHS Act regulations and internal safety requirements.
  • Monitor equipment and assets on site for operational readiness.
  • Provide support to sub-contractors on site by granting access and coordinating work.
  • Apply cost savings in line with financial processes, schedules of payments, and procurement procedures.
  • Deliver services efficiently and within agreed timelines.
 
Reporting
  • Inform Technical Supervisors of incidents, risks, and maintenance progress.
  • Inspect and validate sub-contractor work and escalate deviations.
  • Provide accurate reports of problems and updates to the Service Desk.
 
Compliance and Documentation
  • Follow all company procedures, industry regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date records of all maintenance activities and decisions.
  • Support audits by providing documentation and clarifications.

ROADSIDE SYSTEM (RSS) WORKSHOP TECHNICIAN

Description
POSITION OBJECTIVE:
The Roadside Systems (RSS) Workshop Technician role was established following the insourcing of functions previously outsourced. The Technician is responsible for ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable operation of the RSS Workshop through the testing, calibration, and repair of equipment, while providing technical guidance and operational support to the team. This role is critical in maintaining compliance with regulatory and industry standards, ensuring uninterrupted workshop operations, and supporting SANRAL’s broader technical and operational objectives.
In addition to routine responsibilities, the RSS Workshop Technician drives continuous improvement by identifying systemic issues, recommending process enhancements, and supporting the adoption of new technologies. The role requires a high level of technical expertise, independent judgment, and problem-solving to balance immediate operational needs with long-term strategic objectives, ensuring optimal workshop performance and sustainability.

The role exist to provide advanced diagnostic expertise, lead the resolution of complex incidents, and ensure that system changes, releases, and upgrades are executed with minimal risk and maximum compliance. Beyond immediate incident resolution, the Engineer contributes to strategic ICT initiatives by advising on system architecture, technology adoption, and audit readiness frameworks. The position has a direct influence on SANRAL’s service reliability, regulatory standing, and operational efficiency, requiring decisions that balance urgent operational demands with long-term compliance and performance objectives.
