BIODIVERSITY DATA TECHNICIANS (FIXED-TERM CONTRACT)
 
South African National Parks is looking for two self-motivated, experienced Biodiversity Data Technicians to assist the Cape Research Center (CRC) with curating, cleaning, formatting and uploading data for all taxonomic groups, parks and marine protected areas to the South African National Parks (SANParks) Biodiversity Information Management System (BIMS). This is a three-month position. The incumbent is expected to already be proficient in cleaning and formatting biodiversity occurrence data using functions in Excel, R or OpenRefine. The position starts in January 2024.

Requirements
  • An MSc in Biological Sciences, Conservation Biology or similar.
  • At least six months of experience cleaning and formatting large biodiversity datasets.
  • Excellent data management skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to work productively full-time for three months curating, cleaning, formatting and uploading biodiversity occurrence data.
 
Desirable
  • Understanding of taxonomic backbones, the Darwin Core standard and database management.
  • Experience working with the Global Biodiversity Information Facility platform.
  • Advanced data manipulation skills using functions in MS Excel, R or OpenRefine.
 
Responsibilities
  • Curating, cleaning and formatting of biodiversity occurrence data.
  • Uploading biodiversity occurrence data to the SANParks BIMS.

FLEET MANAGER (RE-ADVERTISEMENT)

Responsibilities
  • To ensure optimal and cost-effective utilization of vehicles, plant and equipment.
  • To ensure all vehicle transport activities, comply with SANParks Standards, SOPs, OHS, SABS, Road Transport Act and Road Traffic Act and Regulations.
  • To manage the asset, register through acquisition, transfers, and disposal of vehicles for Kruger National Park.
  • To manage vehicle fleet-related stakeholder relations and applicable contracts.
  • To oversee the implementation of the Fleet Management SOP and strategy for KNP
  • To manage the vehicle fleet system, inter-dependencies, and risk mitigation.
  • To manage the fleet management budget and monitor expenditures for KNP.
  • To ensure fleet availability to meet all requests by scheduling, forecasting, and surveying current user trends.
  • To lead, manage and coach the human capital in the department.
  • To ensure time maintenance, repairs, and servicing of vehicle fleet.
  • To manage contracts with suppliers and respond to audit findings (as and when) within the KNP division.
  • To manage stakeholder relations both internal and external.
  • To be actively involved in all project management relating to fleet management in KNP.

A challenging position currently exists for Project Manager: Biodiversity Social Projects based at Camdeboo National Park in the Frontier Cluster on a fixed-term contract up to 31 March 2027, renewable on mutual agreementThis position is on a C4 Paterson Salary Band total remuneration package of R 29 578.92 as the incumbent will stay outside the park. The incumbent will also receive a Tool of Trade allowance of R4 756.16 (must be a suitable vehicle) pending approval as per SANParks Delegation Framework.

Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement asset management strategies and policies that ensure the effective use and maintenance of all assets.
  • Recommend and implement any updates on policies and procedures.
  • Communicate to Kruger National Park any changes in asset requirements in terms of new GRAP standards or legislative requirements.
  • Develop a user manual for guiding the implementation of GRAP standards.

  • Daily /weekly clearing of the fixed asset clearing account.
  • Manage and maintain a comprehensive asset register, including acquisition, depreciation, and disposal records.
  • Monitor the recording of donated assets.
  • Drive the Disposal Committee in the execution of their duties.
  • Ensure that monthly reconciliations are done timeously, and the review thereof.
  • Identify anomalies through asset verification and recommend corrective measures.
  • Manage and ensure that biannual fixed assets verification is conducted.
  • Perform annual assessment of useful lives on fixed assets.
  • Issue and control assets barcodes
  • Updating the fixed assets system with the allocated barcodes.

CLUSTER MANAGER (BIODIVERSITY SOCIAL PROJECTS)
A challenging position currently exists for Cluster Manager: Biodiversity Social Projects based at Harkerville for the Garden Route National Park Cluster on fixed term contract up to 31 March 2027, renewable on mutual agreement.
The successful candidate will be responsible to implement Biodiversity Special Projects funded by the Expanded Public Works Programme inclusive of alien & invasive species control, land- and wetland rehabilitation in the GRNP through sound corporate governance systems, policies and procedures and will report to the Implementation Manager: South.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree or BTech Conservation or Environmental Management
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven project management experience
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in invasive alien plant clearing is essential for this position
  • 3 – 5 years experience in health and safety management and compliance
  • Working knowledge of relevant biodiversity legislation, health & safety, and EPWP requirements.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft packages
