EXTERNAL BURSARY PROGRAMME
 
Call for 2025 intake – The South African National Parks (SANParks) is looking for aspiring youth entering their first year of undergraduate studies in the 2025 academic year to join our external bursary programme.
 
What SANParks does
South African National Parks (SANParks) was established in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act, 2003 (Act No 57 of 2003). The primary mandate of SANParks is to oversee the conservation of South Africa’s biodiversity, landscapes, and associated heritage assets through a system of national parks. It also must ensure that South Africans participate and get involved in biodiversity initiatives and that all its operations have a synergistic existence with neighbouring communities for their educational and socioeconomic benefit.
One of the strategic directions of SANParks is growing community support, providing access, benefit-sharing and benefiting local communities, thus the call for applications for the bursary opportunity. This bursary scheme is intended to benefit children residing in communities neighbouring or adjacent to of the National Parks and will be implemented by the SANParks.
 
Bursary Application
The Field of study applied for but not limited to, includes Degree & National Diploma in the field of:
  • Environmental Sciences including Nature Conservation, Environmental Management, Green Energy, Environmental Engineering, sustainable development and Game ranch management
  • Tourism including Hospitality Management, Resort Management, Tour Guide, Events and Conference Management.
  • Social Sciences including Community Development, Economic Development, Socio-Economic Development and related Development studies
 
This is a Comprehensive Bursary
Academic merit will be considered during the selection process, as well as, the imperative to increase the participation of women, people living with disability and designated groups.
 
Requirements
  • Recipients of the SANParks bursary Scheme must be South African citizens.
  • They must be learners from communities living adjacent to National Parks as defined in their management plans.
  • Proof of application and admission to an accredited institution of Higher Education eligibility for funding.
  • Must be entering post-matric study in 2025.
  • The bursary is open to students who are pursuing a qualification in a TVET college.
  • Must be youth, aged 18 – 35.
  • For students currently registered at Institutions of Higher Education, they must have a 100% pass rate to be considered (passed all the courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed).

Documents Required
Your application must be accompanied by the following documents:
  • Motivation letter indicating the reasons for the required bursary as well as the field of study you are applying for;
  • A comprehensive updated CV;
  • A copy of your certified identity document;
  • A copy of your certified latest academic record;
  • Acceptance letter from the registered/accredited public institution of Higher Education (University, TVET, College, University of Technology);
  • Proof of residential address;
  • If receiving a social grant, please attach an affidavit indicating that the income is less than the threshold.
 
Please note that applications must be for full-time studies towards an academic diploma/degree at an accredited public South African College / University of Technology / University.

FIELD ASSISTANT (BIODIVERSITY SOCIAL PROJECTS)
 
The above position is on a fixed-term contract position up to the end of March 2027 Renewable on mutual agreement. The Salary is on a B4 band, 11 823.25 Salary + R 2 426.12 housing allowance per month as the incumbent will be staying outside the park (own accommodation should be provided).
Location MEERKAT NATIONAL PARK
 
Requirements
  • Grade 12
  • Code 08 driver’s license
  • Computer literacy in MS Office
  • 2 years of experience with contracting teams/management of personnel
  • Experience in health and safety management and compliance
  • Experience in invasive alien plant clearing is essential for this position
 
Added Advantages:
  • Experience in Rehabilitation techniques
  • Basic GIS competency and experience
 
Responsibilities
  • Assist with project-related planning
  • Assist with the management and mentoring of EPWP contract
  • Ensure the management of quality, production and monitoring of task-based operations linked to the project
  • Ensure compliance with program standards/norms and Health and Safety requirements
  • Assist with mapping and data recording for the project linked to activities
  • Assist with administrative tasks
  • Report on project progress
  • Communicate and liaise with relevant stakeholders

CLUSTER MANAGER (BIODIVERSITY SOCIAL PROJECTS)
 
A challenging position currently exists for Cluster Manager: Biodiversity Social Projects based at Harkerville for the Garden Route National Park Cluster on a fixed-term contract up to 31 March 2027, renewable on mutual agreement.
The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing Biodiversity Special Projects funded by the Expanded Public Works Programme inclusive of alien & invasive species control, land- and wetland rehabilitation in the GRNP through sound corporate governance systems, policies and procedures and will report to the Implementation Manager: South.

Requirements
  • Bachelor’s Degree or BTech Conservation or Environmental Management
  • Minimum of 5 years of proven project management experience
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in invasive alien plant clearing is essential for this position
  • 3 – 5 years of experience in health and safety management and compliance
  • Working knowledge of relevant biodiversity legislation, health & safety, and EPWP requirements.
  • Computer literacy with a working knowledge of Microsoft packages
  • Good written and verbal communication in English.
  • Willingness to work long and irregular hours as well as extensive travelling.
  • Sound organisational, administrative and negotiation skills.
 
Responsibilities
  • Monitoring of project deliverables according to approved plans
  • Ensuring operational planning of biodiversity social projects in the cluster
  • Managing implementation and administration of policies, strategies and budgets according to annual performance plans and relevant legislation.
  • Ensuring compliance with legal, policy and contractual agreements pertaining to the programmes & projects in the region.
  • Ensuring financial, budget and procurement management inclusive of all audit and reporting requirements.
  • Implement effective human resources management, including the training responsibilities for the EPWP projects.
  • Administration and database management to meet reporting requirements of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Build and maintain good communication and relationships with stakeholders.
  • Ensure SHEQ compliance of all projects and compile monthly reports
  • Ensure all relevant data is captured for the projects
  • Compile monthly progress reports
  • Conduct internal audits and assessments on all projects in the cluster
