MANAGER: PARK EXPANSION (BASED AT PE/CAPE TOWN OFFICES)

Description:
A challenging opportunity currently exists for a dynamic, team-oriented and highly motivated Park Expansion Manager to manage and coordinate the expansion of the system of National Parks through voluntary agreements with communities and landowners. The successful candidate will report to the General Manager: Park Planning and will be based at PE Offices or Cape Town Offices.

The remuneration package includes a basic salary, based on the salary scale of a position with a Patterson D5 band job grade and allowances and benefits as specified in the HR Tariff Document and Conditions of Service of SANParks.
 
Requirements:
  • Postgraduate degree in Environmental, Sustainable Development, Ecological or Earth Science.
  • 7 - 10 years of experience in the implementation of landscape-scale biodiversity conservation projects or programmes.
  • 5 years of experience in protected area planning and management..
  • 7 - 10 years of experience in Biodiversity Stewardship.
  • Knowledge in Landscape ecology, ecological processes and functions, and ecological goods and services.
  • Knowledge in ecological processes and systems.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation (especially NEMPAA).
  • Communication skills: written and oral.
  • Computer skills.
  • GIS skill.
 
 
Responsibilities:
  • To coordinate all processes towards the declaration of private and communally owned properties as a national park for existing National Parks (excluding Kruger) guided by the SANParks approved Land Inclusion Plan.
  • To prioritise focus properties on an annual basis and update this adaptively in collaboration with Park Managers and Park Planning staff.
  • To coordinate landowner engagements, site screening and assessment processes.
  • To coordinate the process to conclude relevant agreements between SANParks and landowners in collaboration with SANParks Legal Services.
  • To refine and strengthen SANParks systems and procedures for expansion through agreements with private and communal landowners.
  • To develop a brochure and supporting materials to assist with engagement with landowners.
  • To facilitate internal information sharing and capacity strengthening for contractual national park processes within SANParks.
  • To collaborate with partners and stakeholders exchanging knowledge, and participate in the National Stewardship Technical Working Group and related groups.
  • To manage the donor project processes, budget and reporting to donors.
  • To manage, develop the capacity of and grow the park expansion team.
