SENIOR SPECIALIST 1: CURATION AND COLLECTION MANAGEMENT

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated and meticulous individual to co-ordinate collection management and curation activities across the network of institutions participating in the Natural Science Collections Facility (NSCF), in particular, facilitate sharing of knowledge and experience across the network, provide guidance to staff at institutions, and monitor the status of collection management and curation.
 
This position requires a degree in Biological Sciences or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. Honours degree or equivalent qualification in Biological Sciences at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. Training courses completed in collection management/curation and project management will also be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years of work experience in the relevant field of natural science collections management and curation, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position(s).
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: knowledge of natural science collection curation and management policies, procedures and standards; excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent analytical skills; highly motivated individual that has an ability to work with a diverse team and under pressure whilst being quality and safety conscious, and advanced computer literacy. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
 
Key responsibilities include:
  • Manage collection management and curation engagement sessions including facilitating a community of practice , discussion forums, webinars and tutorials;
  • Provide guidance to participating institutions for development and revision of policies, procedures and standards documents;
  • Monitor status of collection management and curation and provide guidance to participating institutions on implementation of policies, standards and processes for collection management and curation;
  • Contribute to NSCF activities, including planning, reporting, transformation and organizational development; and
  • Conduct capacity development, research relevant to collection management and curation.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: REVENUE AND FINANCIAL REPORTING

The South African National Biodiversity Institute’s (SANBI) Finance Division requires a highly professional person to assist in ensuring that there is accurate recording of revenue and reporting of accounting information in line with current laws and regulations, and to plan, coordinate and implement a system for accurate accounting and reporting of SANBI’s revenue and other financial information in ensuring good corporate governance  in accordance with King IV and other regulatory requirements.
 
This position requires a degree in in Financial Management, Accounting Science or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate degree or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.  This position also requires 6 years’ experience in relevant field, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position(s).

SENIOR SPECIALIST 2: SPATIAL ANALYST ECOLOGICAL INFRASTRUCTURE

The South African National Biodiversity Institute requires a motivated, professional, and responsible team player to provide technical spatial mapping and analysis support to SANBI in its work on water-related ecological infrastructure for the Ecological Infrastructure for Water Security (EI4WS) project.
 
This position requires a degree in Natural or Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology or Botany or equivalent qualification with NQF 7. A postgraduate degree or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years of work experience in the relevant field, 4 years of which should be spatial analysis or first line of management of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Projects of which 4 years of which should be first line management position (s).
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive experience working with spatial data layers related to water-related ecological infrastructure (such as the National Wetland Map, national river network layer, and data on strategic water source areas); comprehensive knowledge of spatial and non-spatial data analysis skills including data collection, data management, data flow, spatial analysis and cartography; evidence of experience in technical analysis skills in GIS or using spatial packages of R or python is essential; extensive experience in leading and managing spatial projects; understanding of research processes and outputs; knowledge of the science-policy interface; knowledge of biodiversity conservation priorities; in-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; knowledge of legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation; project management knowledge, coordination and skills; ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations, and highly effective verbal and written communication capabilities; Be in possession of a valid unendorsed driver’s license, as well as be willing to travel and participate in research in the field.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Source, develop and manage spatial data;
  • Undertake advanced spatial analyses to support ecological infrastructure work at SANBI;
  • Execute Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technical support to EI4WS project and its stakeholders related to mapping ecological infrastructure features and consolidating ecological infrastructure maps;
  • Undertake mentoring and capacity building on spatial analysis and GIS data management for freshwater ecosystem mapping; and
  • Interpret spatial information for science communication.

CANDIDATE AUXILIARY SERVICE OFFICER

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individuals to assist the Senior Artisan to ensure that all projects and maintenance requests are completed according to specification within the budget and time frames using quality assurance standards.
 
This position requires a Grade 10 or equivalent at NQF Level 2 with 2 years’ experience in building, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure OR Grade 12 or equivalent at NQF Level 4 with 1 years’ experience in building, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure. Relevant Higher Education Qualification at NQF 5 will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate in English (read and write); ability to work under pressure; service focus; safety conscious; problem solving and a valid code B or C1 driver’s licence (Code C1).
