ASSISTANT DIRECTOR: REGIONAL COORDINATION

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to manage the strategic and operational component of the SANBI Directorate on Biological Invasion in Regions to ensure the achievement of SANBI strategic goals.
 
This position requires a Degree in Life Sciences, Natural Sciences, Ecology, Biology or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage.  This position also requires 6 years of work experience in relevant field, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position(s).
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: Completion of at least one scientific publication; Knowledge of National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act (NEMBA) as well as associated regulations – experience in the biodiversity sector; Knowledge of SANBI’s policies and systems – experience in a public service organisation; Numeracy – budget management and analysis of scientific data; Literacy – writing of reports, scientific publications, motivations, awareness raising materials; Language skills – ability to speak confidently at meetings and conferences – must have good command of spoken and written English, typing experience – required daily for emails and document preparation, Computer literate – Full Microsoft Office suite required daily for all data management as well as analysis and write ups. Other programmes required for mapping and data analysis, In-depth understanding of national and global invasion biology issues, Knowledge about legislation pertaining to invasion biology; Knowledge on the management of organisational finance; Project management knowledge and skills; Knowledge about Government Human Resources (HR), procurement and financial management policies. The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
 
Key Performance Responsibilities include:
  • Ensure detection program is effectively implemented and managed;
  • Manage and coordinate the Eradication Programme;
  • Execute research and publishing duties;
  • Manage the Regional Unit’s outcomes and performance; and
  • Ensure efficient management of the region’s data and database.

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to provide technical support for detection and eradication of emerging invasive species in the region through managing field trips, data-co-ordination, awareness raising, scientific literature searches and administration.
 
This position requires a national diploma in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification at NQF 6 with 4 years of work experience in the relevant field or a degree in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification at NQF 7 with 2 years of work experience in the relevant field.  Postgraduate qualification in Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification with NQF 8 will be an added advantage.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: in depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; knowledge about legislation pertaining to invasion biology, project management knowledge and skills; knowledge about government human resources, procurement and financial management policies: good  interpersonal, time management, and problem solving skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.

  • Support the regional and departmental units to achieve their outcomes;

  • Execute specimen collection duties;

GARDEN MANAGER: LOWVELD NATIONAL BOTANICAL GARDEN

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of a self-motivated, innovative, business focused and results-driven individual to ensure the conservation and appreciation of the natural, cultural and historic values of the Lowveld National Botanical Garden in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga Province, through the development and implementation of strategic and operational plans and programs, consistent with statutory responsibilities and corporate policies.
 
This position requires a degree in Horticulture, Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany or equivalent qualification NQF 7. A postgraduate qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 8 years of work experience in relevant field, 4 years of which should be in first line management position(s) practising as a Horticulturist. Experience must also include management and supervising operational line management functions especially that of teams and support services.
 
The following competencies are required of the candidate to be successful in this position: extensive experience and knowledge of nature-based tourism, business management principles, conservation, horticulture, nursery infrastructure maintenance, business administration, and training and development; comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and experience in national and global biodiversity conservation including broad understanding of national and global botanical garden management; extensive knowledge about legislation, policies, procedures, process, practices, systems, and frameworks related to biodiversity conservation and botanical garden management; advanced knowledge on management of organisational finances and budgeting processes and principles, human resources requirements, policies, procedures and processes, corporate governance principles and corporate governance and compliance requirements; excellent project and programme management skills, proven ability to work with diverse team whilst under pressure being quality, cost, health, and safety conscious; advanced planning, organizing, and problem solving skills; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including (Ms Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook) will be advantageous.   • Develop and maintain strategic partnerships;
  • Ensure effective contract management;

PRINCIPAL TECHNICAL ASSISTANT: SCIENCE COLLECTIONS

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated, efficient, and enthusiastic person to provide physical and scientific curation support in the Compton Herbarium.  The incumbent will be required to provide scientific and technical support services in herbarium collections, including data capture, quality control, imaging, mounting and repair of herbarium specimens, physical curation activities, as well as co-ordination and supervision of herbarium volunteers and interns.
 
The successful candidate must be in possession of a Grade 12, (with Biology as a subject), Job Specific Qualification, or equivalent qualification with NQF 4 with 5 years of work experience in the relevant field, OR a National Diploma or Higher Certificate or equivalent qualification with NQF 6 with 3 years of work experience in the relevant field. A Higher Education Qualification/Advanced Diploma at NQF 7 will be an added advantage.

PARA ECOLOGIST – 3 POSITIONS

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a self-motivated individual to Survey targeted emerging invasive alien species, clear small localised populations where possible and assist in the development of distribution maps, dossiers and risk analyses of these species.

This position requires a Grade 10 job specific qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 2 with 4 years working experience in the relevant field OR Grade 12 job specific qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 4 with 3 years working experience. A higher education qualification at NQF 5 would be an added advantage.

The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: in-depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation; Knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation, Knowledge on the management of organisational finance; Project management knowledge and skills; Knowledge about Government, Human Resources, procurement and financial management policies; good spoken and written communication skills; ability to learn how to use basic computer programmes; good interpersonal relations, taking initiative, organisational and administrative skills; and willingness to travel extensively for fieldwork.   • Assist with surveying of high-risk sites and for targeted invasive alien species within the region;
  • Clear manageable populations of targeted invasive alien species;
  • Assist with developing Terms of Reference (TORs), submissions to Supply Chain Management (SCM), training of clearing contractors, monitoring and data collection when large populations of target species are discovered;
  • Provide support to contract managers, taxon specific researchers and regional co-ordinators - compile distribution maps, dossiers and assist with collecting information for risk analyses and information products on targeted invasive alien species and pathways;
  • Ensure that the team vehicle and all field equipment is maintained in a safe and clean condition and assistance with regional administration; and
  • Ensure compliance with all Health and Safety procedures, notably road safety and driver responsibilities.
