The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a creative, self-disciplined and self-motivated individual to manage the design, layout and production of high-quality publications of an international standard (Strelitzia, Suricata, Flowering Plants of Africa, Biodiversity Series and ad hoc publications) as well as SANBI Marketing and corporate materials, and must lead, manage and execute computer generated print and electronic forms of visual science-based communication utilizing devoted PC software (MS software package, Indesign, Photoshop, CorelDraw, Fireworks, Flash, Illustrator, Director, Flipbook Pro, LiveCycle) and hardware (e.g. Personal Computer workstation, scanners, tablet and printers), all within set deadlines to all staff within SANBI as well as external researchers/scientists, enhancing the image and promoting the vision/mission of SANBI.
 
This position requires a degree in Graphic Design or equivalent qualification at NQF 7.  Honours or equivalent degree at NQF 8 will be an added advantage. Additional knowledge and skills on corporate communications will be an added advantage. This position also requires 6 years’ experience, 3 years of which should be in supervisory position. The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: advanced project management knowledge and skills; proven ability to work in a team, as well as independently with minimal supervision; in-depth knowledge of the printing process and requirements including repro experience; proven ability to provide self-training on new design software; in-depth knowledge and experience of using image editing techniques; comprehensive knowledge and understanding of copyright restrictions; must have an up to date knowledge of design trends and software developments, photography; quick at putting content together and reading; must have detail consciousness, and be a disciplined person;  must be able to take initiative; must be collaborative;  must be able to meet deadlines, multitasking, and have an ability to communicate clearly and accurately (verbally and in writing); must be adaptable, and be passionate about Biodiversity; excellent communication (both verbal and written) and interpersonal skills, report writing skills, people management skills, and excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools are essential.
 
The possession of a valid driver’s licence with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel is essential.
 
Key performance responsibilities include:

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) requires the services of a self-motivated, innovative, business focused and results-driven individual who will lead and direct a team in the efficient operational management of a nationally renowned Hantam National Botanical Garden in the Northern Cape and ensuring the conservation and appreciation of the natural, cultural and historic values of this ‘wild’ National Botanical Garden, comprising a natural area of over 6,000 ha, through the development and implementation of strategic and operational plans and programs, consistent with statutory responsibilities and corporate policies.
 
The successful candidate must be in possession of a degree in Horticulture or Nature Conservation, Life Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Botany, or equivalent qualification at NQF 7. In addition a qualification in Business Administration or Honours or equivalent at NQF 8 will be an added advantage, 8 years’ experience in relevant field, of which 4 years’ be in first line management position(s) as a practicing Conservation Manager or Horticulturist.
 
The incumbent must be a strategic thinker and with experience in the supervision of staff and have good management, leadership, coordination, administrative and financial management. Experience/exposure to nature-based tourism, management and conservation. In depth understanding of national and global biodiversity conservation and of global botanical garden management. Knowledge about legislation pertaining to biodiversity conservation and on the management of organization finances. Skills knowledge and experience in Project Management.  Knowledge about Government Policies, Acts, Legislation, human resources, procurement and financial management policies.
 
The successful candidate will be expected to work out of normal working hours including Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays and be on standby duty. The incumbent must demonstrate the ability to maintain sound interpersonal relations/communications with both internal and external stakeholders and have an excellent spoken and written command of English, with an understanding and spoken/written command of Afrikaans, as well as knowledge of the indigenous plants of the Succulent Karoo, an added advantage.
 
The candidate must be proficient in MS Office as well as have a valid Code B/EB drivers’ license with at least (1) one year’s practical driving experience. Due to operational requirements the successful candidate will be expected to live in the allocated staff residence.
 
The responsibilities include
  • Provide strategic leadership in the development and maintenance operations of the National Botanical Garden, their living collections, associated estates, facilities and infrastructure;

This position requires a Grade 12, or equivalent qualification at NQF 4. Higher Education Qualification or equivalent qualification at NQF 5 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 5 years’ of relevant driving experience.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: an unendorsed Driver’s Licence Code EC and valid PDP; ability to work under pressure whilst being safety conscious; good communication skills and interpersonal relations skills; good planning, organizing, and problem-solving skills; excellent service focus skills; Knowledge on the use of a global positioning system and maps; and ability to drive 50-seater passenger bus, and a 4x4 tractor with slasher and trailer behind.

SCIENTIST: GENETICALLY MODIFIED ORGANISMS ASSESSMENT

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for a highly motivated individual to lead SANBI’s mandate  on Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) monitoring and reporting.
 
This position requires a postgraduate degree in Agriculture/Natural Sciences/Ecology/Biology/Botany, or equivalent and relevant qualification at NQF level 9. A qualification at NQF level 10 will be an added advantage. This position also requires a minimum of 6 years’ relevant work experience in the field, 4 years of which should be in executing GMO science research projects.
 
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: advanced knowledge of GMO monitoring and assessment research; experience in grant funding applications; student mentoring and supervision; experience in stakeholder coordination, and ability to develop and maintain partnerships; understanding of relevant legislation, policies, procedures, processes, practices related to GMOs; excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; excellent computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook and other specialized software in the field of practice.
 
The candidate must be in possession of a valid driver’s license and must be willing to travel nationally and internationally.
 
Key performance responsibilities include:
  • Provide leadership and strategic direction in projects, groups and activities in relation to monitoring the impact of GMOs on the environment;
  • Contribute to knowledge generation and dissemination through various publications in line with the research activities of the unit. The outputs associated with research activities are expected to have some level of impact within the subject area;
  • Establish and maintain collaborations for research; and continuously source funding for own/students/interns projects/work on GMO impacts on the environment;
  • Participate in and contribute to Biodiversity Policy, Planning and Management associated with GMO impacts on the environment. This includes leading a periodic assessment and report of the impacts of GMOs on biodiversity in South Africa; and
  • Contribute to Human Capital Development in the field of impacts of GMOs on the environment.
