Scientist (S)
12-month contract
This post exists to support the Ntombi Vimbela! flagship research activities in GHRU through assisting with project coordination, supervision of research assistants, supporting intervention implementation, literature review, data collection and data analysis, and contribute to report and manuscript writing. These tasks are essential for GHRU to meet its primary objective (i.e. to conduct high quality scientific research aimed to improve the health status and quality of life of women, and to inform policy, health services, and health promotion.
 
Responsibilities:
• Contribute to the development of research tools, protocols and SOPs.
• Co-ordinate data collection and intervention implementation activities,
• Conduct literature searches and reviews
• Conduct qualitative data analysis, statistical analysis, and interpretation of quantitative data.
• Input into publishing written scientific outputs
• Supervise research assistants and report on performance
• Participate in research dissemination and translation activities
 
Core Requirements:
• Masters in public health, Social Sciences or related.
• 2 years’ experience working in research environment
• 2 years’ experience in project coordination and managing small teams.
 
Advantageous:
• 2 years’ experience with quantitative and qualitative research.
• 1 year working in the gender-based violence field of study.
• Experience preparing and formatting manuscripts for scientific publication.

Chief Research Technologist: Laboratory Lead
Duration: 3-year contract
The South African Medical Research Council, HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Research Unit requires a qualified and experienced Laboratory Lead to oversee laboratory functioning at their 6 onsite laboratories and central laboratory facilities.
The successful candidate must have extensive knowledge of the functioning of clinical trial laboratories. They should have technical and scientific knowledge and management experience with research and diagnostic laboratories.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Management of central laboratory, central biorepository and site laboratories
  • Prepare all areas of the laboratory for audits ie. SAHPRA, SANAS, GCLP, FDA
  • To oversee internal compliancy checks and corrective action
  • Management of multiple laboratory projects and studies
  • Laboratory set up for new studies, new analyzers, new tests and methods
  • Development and maintenance of service level agreements with contracted laboratories
  • Development and review of laboratory SOPs
  • Oversee the laboratory EQA and IQA program
  • Management of laboratory staff
  • Laboratory risk management
  • Laboratory safety management
  • Laboratory asset management
  • Laboratory stock management
  • Laboratory document management,
  • Laboratory supply chain management,
  • To provide training and support to laboratory staff
 
Core Requirements:
  • B. Tech in Biomedical Technology - Clinical Pathology, or equivalent 4-year qualification in Laboratory Science / Biomedical Science or similar relevant qualification or higher
  • Registered with the HPCSA (Medical Technologist: Clinical Pathology)
  • 5 years laboratory experience
  • 5 years clinical trial experience
  • Management or working in the Lab experience
  • Experience with SANAS ISO15189 audit requirements – certificate required
  • Computer literate on Microsoft Excel; Word, PowerPoint
 
Advantageous:
  • Masters/PhD in laboratory science within HIV or other infectious diseases
  • 1-2 years management leadership responsibilities/ experience
  • Certification in GCLP and International Air Transport Association (IATA) Certification
  • A valid certificate in Good Clinical Practice (GCP)
  • Previous Laboratory management experience within a clinical trial setting
  • Experience with Laboratory audits, e.g. SANAS, FDA, GCLP etc

SPECIALIST CLINICIAN (E)
Duration: 2- YEAR position
A position has become available for a Specialist Clinician Scientist in the HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Research Unit. The person will be required to be CRS leader and IOR in their respective site.
 
Responsibilities:
• Provide leadership and oversight for all clinical research activities.
• Ensure implementation and compliance of multiple projects as per regulatory requirements, ethical standards, study protocols, SOPs, and timelines.
• Oversee participant recruitment, enrolment, and follow-up processes.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive study documentation.
• Collaborate with the study team to ensure the successful execution of clinical trials.
• Monitor and report on the progress of clinical studies to HIDRU Unit leadership, sponsors, and stakeholders.
• Address and resolve any issues related to study conduct and participant safety.
• Principal investigator (PI) on clinical trials within the Unit.
• Project management skills, including management of staff performance, output and quality, team coordination and supervision skills
• Advanced knowledge of management of clinical emergencies and abnormal investigation results
• Report writing
• Participation in required protocol related teleconferences
• Willing to contribute to the scientific research agenda of the Unit.
• Income generation through grants and contracts as a PI, and management of site finances
• Develop publications for peer-reviewed scientific journals
• Contribute to research grants and conference abstracts
• Contribution to management of the Unit or SAMRC through meeting organisation or participation in committees, reviews, and organisational processes. Includes assistance with Unit reporting processes, organizing academic days, journal clubs etc.
 
Core Requirements:
• Medical degree
• HPCSA registration
• Track record of managing and conducting clinical trials as a principal investigator for 2 to 5 years.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams in the last 2 to 5 years.
• In-depth knowledge of regulatory requirements and Good Clinical Practice guidelines.
• Leadership role in a sites that is conducting HIV vaccine clinical trials or infectious disease clinical trials, including staff/people management.
• Proven clinical and project management skills
• Leadership competency, encompassing strategic thinking, impact and influence, leading and inspiring teams, analytical and critical thinking, teamwork and collaboration, together with stakeholder centricity and service.
 
Advantageous:
• PhD or Masters in health-related field.
• Proven track record of securing grants as PI and attracting funding in the last 5 years.
• Track record of publications

TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER MANAGER (R717A) - CLOSING DATE: 27 JUNE 2024

Technology Transfer Manager
Duration: 3-Year Contract
GIPD division is seeking to appoint a Technology Transfer Manager to manage innovation activities at the SAMRC, specifically the activities and responsibilities of the SAMRC’s Technology Transfer Office.
The incumbent will report to a Senior Program Manager and will be responsible for the following strategic and core areas:
 
Responsibilities:
IP management and technology transfer
  • Identify, evaluate, protect, manage and commercialize IP developed by the SAMRC.
  • Facilitate and raise funding for product development and market introduction.
  • Manage SAMRC’s compliance with the IPR Act.
  • Prepare and disseminate marketing materials and deliver presentations on the TTO and technologies.
  • Awareness raising and relationship building with SAMRC units.
Management of the SAMRC-TIA Seed fund
Manage the SAMRC-TIA Seed fund, including:
  • Run RFAs
  • Manage proposal reviews and approvals.
  • Manage the seed fund awards.
  • Provide secretariat function for the SAMRC-TIA Seed Fund Steering Committee
Stakeholder liaison
  • Collaborate & interact with other TTOs and inventors, industry, and other research and development entities.
  • Participate in the national innovation agenda.
  • Independently liaise with internal stakeholders: GIPD Program Manager and Executive Director, Other GIPD staff, Support department staff, SAMRC researchers.
  • Facilitate and co-host meetings/delegations with external stakeholders.
  • Facilitate the preparation of stakeholder communication materials (e.g. agenda, website material, presentations, reports, marketing materials, press releases, project pamphlets, etc.).
 
Core Requirements:
  • 4 Year degree or Bachelor’s Degree with Honours or equivalent in the Life Sciences or related fields (including Biotechnology, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, etc.)
  • Completion of at least two recognized IP/Tech Transfer training workshops
  • At least 3-5 years of relevant experience in the field of technology transfer, including intellectual property management and commercialization
  • General project management experience, including managing reporting, contract compliance, managing outputs and managing budgets, where applicable
 
Advantageous:
  • Experience in protecting and commercializing technologies in a public research environment, especially in the health arena
  • Experience in general innovation support
  • Experience in managing seed funds.
  • Demonstrated experience in working across academia, government departments and industry.
  • Some business or marketing experience
