A position has become available for a Specialist Scientist in the Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform. The Biomedical Research and Innovation Platform is a dynamic research platform within the Centers and Platform Office of the South African Medical Research Council. The Platform focusses on health research and innovation, aimed at the early detection, prevention and treatment of non-communicable diseases such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
In order to address the diverse responsibilities associated with this role, we are seeking a self-driven molecular biologist with expertise in diabetes and related metabolic disorders. The incumbent will work with the Epigenetics/Obesity/Diabetes in Pregnancy team, offering crucial support in laboratory operations and project management across various research domains, including molecular biology and clinically oriented research. Additionally, this position requires the exploration and development of new research areas that align with the group's current research activities.

Core Requirements:
- PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Physiology or similar relevant qualification with five years of experience post qualification.
- Track record in publishing first and/or senior authored original research articles after obtaining PhD (Minimum of five peer reviewed journal articles - three as first author, excluding reviews - post PhD).
- Proven laboratory, molecular biology, statistical analysis, and project management skills
- Demonstrated history of leading projects and supervision of postgraduate students (PhD and Masters students).
- Demonstrated ability of writing grants and attracting funding.
- Ability to independently plan experimental workflows for multiple experiments.
- Ability to perform data analysis, interpret and draw conclusions from data.
- Ability to provide guidance and collaborate in a team environment.
- Experience in oral presentations.
- Reviewing of research papers and national grants.

The South African Medical Research Council’s Gender and Health Research Unit has been awarded funding from Wellcome Trust for a large study, entitled: Fediša Modikologo which aims to describe the impact of severe intimate partner violence on women and their families, to understand risk factors for intimate partner femicide, and drivers of intergenerational cycling of violence. The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.

SPECIALIST SCIENTIST – 1 POST
Duration: 5 Year Contract
The South African Medical Research Council’s Gender and Health Research Unit has been awarded funding from Wellcome Trust for a large study, entitled: Fediša Modikologo which aims to describe the impact of severe intimate partner violence on women and their families, to understand risk factors for intimate partner femicide, and drivers of intergenerational cycling of violence. The post holder will assist with and form an integral part of the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
The research will be conducted in the Cape Winelands area. This project requires a suitably qualified and experienced Specialist Scientist to work as a Regional Manager, managing the Fediša Cape Town site, which will include, but is not limited to, the following:
Responsibilities:
- Lead the Fediša Western Cape study site.
- Lead stakeholder management for the study in the Western Cape.
- Manage the Western Cape regional coordinator and support her in all her staff management.
- Write and publish as a first author and co-author peer-reviewed journal articles or book chapters.
- Write research grants for external funding for discovery research on mental health through the Fedisa platform, with a particular focus on contributions of genetics and epigenetics.
- Present findings of research into materials accessible for lay audiences as briefs, power points, infographics etc.
- Present research at scientific conferences.
- Contribute to the wider SAMRC through participation in committees, reviews and organisational processes including scientific review of proposals for ethics committee.
- Assistance with the management of the Unit.
- Develop staff capacity within the GHRU.
- Supervise, or examine, master’s and PhD theses.
Core Requirements:
- PhD in public health or psychology or psychiatry
- 5 years in a research environment focusing on women’s experience of gender-based violence, childhood trauma and biological indicators of their impact on mental health.
- 2 years post-PhD in a research environment.
- Author on 10 peer-reviewed journal publications, 5 as first author.
- Expertise on the impact of trauma on survivors’ mental health, including genetic/epigenetic pathways to impact, through first-author publications.
- Expertise in writing research grants (whether funded or not) on an aspect of trauma and mental health, including biological indicators.
- Capacity development: currently supervising 2 master’s or a PhD, or has graduated a master’s student, or equivalent teaching.
- Has been PI on a project, or equivalent project leader.
- Track record reviewing abstracts for conferences or papers for journals.
Advantageous:
- Author on 15 peer-reviewed journal publications, 8 as first author
- PI on previous project with grant funding raised.
- Previous work with trauma-exposed children as well as adults
- Capacity development: having supervised 1 or more Master students to graduation,

RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST: DATA COORDINATOR
Duration: One - Year Contract
The HIV and Other Infectious Diseases Research Unit (HIDRU) seeks to appoint a Data Coordinator to conduct data management and quality control of data at the Clinical Research Sites within the Durban region, to ensure compliance with SA and ICH GCP and HSP requirements. Data Coordination activities will include working within the framework of approved protocols and regulatory documentation.
Responsibilities:
• Ensure optimum data quality in clinical trial research documentation (source, CRFs and Electronic Data Capture System)
• Quality Control of all study documentation including informed consent process. Maintain QC rate within acceptable levels across multiple studies.
• Perform regular data checks on the database and generate data reports. Corrective action of reports from the database and corrective action/responding to emails received from the study data manager.
• Ensure that staff QCs are completed timeously. Provide ongoing support to staff completing data capture and addressing QCs. Assisting with troubleshooting for system issues.
• Electronic data capture within the protocol-specified time frames for multiple studies
• Assist with preparation for monitoring visits and corrective actions for internal and external monitoring reports for multiple studies.
• Documentation management including version control of all study related documents.
• Maintaining an excellent filing and indexing system for all study documents including participant and regulatory documents
• Assist with setup and implementation of new studies.
• End of study document inventory
• Development and preparation of reports for study management
Core Requirements:
• 1- or 2-year accredited course/certificate relevant to the job/discipline or similar relevant qualification or higher
• At least 2 years clinical research experience
• At least 1-2 years’ experience in conducting data activities in clinical trials.
• At least 1-2 years’ experience in electronic data capturing and QC resolution.
Advantageous:
• Valid code 8 driver’s license
• Valid recent GCP and HSP certificate
• Willingness to work outside normal working hours when required.
• Work with meticulous attention to detail to ensure good data quality.
• Effective organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
• Excellent computer skills in MS Office packages
• The ability to maintain a high degree of professionalism and confidentiality.
• The ability to work independently, under pressure and honor deadlines.
• Ability to work across multiple clinical trials concurrently.

PROJECT LEADER - WHO-FIC COLLABORATING CENTRE

The South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) is seeking to appoint a Project Leader to ensure the sustainability of the WHO Collaborating Centre for the Family of International Classifications (WHO-FIC CC) in its Burden of Disease Research Unit (BODRU). BODRU collects and analyses data on South Africa’s health status to estimate and monitor the burden of disease (the impact of health problems) and factors associated with the health of the population. The Unit provides information on the trends in the country’s health status as well as causes of disease and death for future planning to improve the health of the nation. It has developed exceptional expertise in summary health measures, health surveys, clinical classification, and mortality data and health informatics analysis.
The successful candidate will be required to provide public health research and training expertise related to clinical coding across selected projects in BODRU, and contribute to management and coordination of the WHO-FIC Collaborating Centre. The post holder must actively contribute to the SAMRC’s transformation agenda.
Responsibilities:
• To build networks and facilitate contributions to the development and maintenance of the WHO-FIC core member classifications (ICD, ICHI, ICF).
• To advise on adherence to ICD-10 and ICD-11 coding principles when carrying out morbidity/mortality coding across collaborative projects.
• To participate in activities of the international network of WHO-FIC collaborating centres on behalf of the CC.
• To contribute to health research and training projects related to clinical coding using the WHO-FIC classifications.
• To lead and/or contribute to papers for publication in national and international peer-reviewed journals.
• To disseminate research findings through national and international conference presentations, webinars, infographics and data visualisation.
Core Requirements:
• MSc (Clinical Epidemiology) or equivalent Masters-level qualification in relevant field including some clinical training (at least basic anatomy and physiology) or MBChB with relevant research training and experience.
• Two years minimum experience with the application of clinical coding e.g. ICD and/or ICF and/or CCSA, or equivalent, in a research or service environment.
• Project Management/Coordination experience
• Demonstrated experience of networking with stakeholders.
• Knowledge of GCP guidelines.
• Proficiency in TEAMS (or Zoom), MS Word, PowerPoint and Excel.
• Availability to travel nationally, regionally and internationally to engage with stakeholders independently.
Advantageous:
• HPCSA registration or equivalent.
• Formal training in clinical coding.
• Demonstrated experience in training and development of materials related to clinical coding.
• Four years minimum experience with clinical coding in a research or service environment.
. Previous networking with international stakeholders.
• Experience of writing technical reports and publication of scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.
