Vacancy: Research Assistant (At level of senior research technologist, seasoned) Two -Year Contract (Three fulltime positions)

The Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Research Unit, in partnership with the University of Maryland, is looking to employ experienced, energetic and organized research assistants to work on two US. National Institute of Health-funded projects that aim to reduce mental health and substance use stigma towards people living with HIV/TB. The projects involve working directly with health workers in community settings to support their efforts to improve HIV care outcomes among people who have mental health or substance use concerns.
Successful candidates will be responsible for qualitative data collection and coding (analysis), community observations, training and supervising lay health providers (community health workers and peer providers) in strategies for supporting HIV care engagement among people who have mental health and substance use concerns and supporting quantitative data collection. Candidates will be required to travel between participating facilities which will be located in the Khayelitsha health districts within the Cape Town metropole.
Responsibilities:
- Training lay health providers
- Supervision of lay providers
- Conducting qualitative interviews and focus groups
- Conducting behavioural assessments
- Community observations of lay providers’ interactions with patients
- Assisting with qualitative data analysis
Core Requirements:
- Proficiency in isiXhosa and English
- At least three years of relevant work experience.
- A three year degree or national diploma in a relevant field
- Certification in Good clinical practice
- Experience in mental health research among people living with HIV
- Training in qualitative methods
- Experience in collecting and analysing qualitative data
- Experience in working as part of an international project team.
Pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications and will be at the level of senior research technologist. Successful candidates will be provided with relevant on-the-job training.
A salary in the region of R326 601 per annum, cost-to-company, will be negotiated in consideration of experience and qualifications.
