Role Mandate
To be a first line supervisor in ensuring that a small team achieve its production targets in line with BOP standards.
 
Key Accountabilities
• Plan, organize & set out the daily task within an operation
• Control using BOP
• Take corrective actions including disciplinary actions if there are deviations
• Transport the team to and from infield
• Conduct daily risk assessment
• Complete daily production sheet and other related administration functions
• Assist during the incident investigation
• Ensure correct utilisation of equipment by team members and fuel management
• Check log quality during harvesting operations
 
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 10
• Code C1 or higher driver's license with PDP
• Supervisor certificate
• Basic safety, Environmental Awareness, Fire Suppression, SHE rep and First certificates will be advantageous

To manage all growing stock in SAFCOL plantation (Entabeni Plantation) by implementing silviculture practices according to BOP standards.
 
Key Accountabilities
• Manage silviculture activities and contractors and establishment programme by:
  • Performing growth stock planning, identify nature and type of plants to be planted for specific conditions
  • Determining planting regime and assessing sites for re-generation
  • Identifying correct fertilizer type and application
  • Performing blanking assessments to replace dead plants and assessing watering needs in winter plants
• Perform fire management by:
  • Compiling burning register and fire plan
  • Assessing if fuel reduction burn is required before planting
  • Developing and managing fuel reduction burns in mature compartments
  • Obtaining burning permits
  • Managing annual firebreak preparations and burning of fire breaks
  • Attending fire association meetings and ensuring suppression of fire
• Manage pruning process by:
  • Managing process according to APO and regimes
  • Managing task determination by keeping track of the amount of trees to be pruned per worker
• Manage marking of trees for thinning, develop and manage plantation weed control plan
• Ensure proper management of conservation areas by controlling weeding, erosion, controlling escapees (weeds)
• Update and implement management unit clearing plan, conservation management plan, environmental management plan
• Identify CAPEX needs, compile detail annual silviculture budget and consolidate budget for the section
• Monitor sectional budget and manage fuel consumption of vehicles under area of control
• Manage assets and ensure proper utilisation and preventative maintenance plan is executed
• Extract data from IMS for daily operations and reporting
• Ensure correct utilisation of equipment by teams
• Ensure team adherence to health and safety standards and environmental practices
• Manage fire-fighting operations, practices and monitor Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage
• Ensure toolbox talks, perform incident investigations and identify training needs
• Organise Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) awareness initiatives
• Build and maintain relationships with the community regarding firewood, sand mining, fire prevention, and illegal activities
• Facilitate engagements with internal support functions to ensure cooperation within the business
• Supervise Silviculture team to ensure effective daily operations
• Coach and mentor team members on a daily basis to improve productivity
• Monitor team members to ensure planned training needs is undertaken
 
Minimum Requirements
• Grade 12
• National Diploma in Forestry (NQF level 6)
• B-Tech or BSc Degree in Forestry (NQF level 7) will be added advantage
• 3 – 5 Years’ experience in silviculture operations

Role Mandate
To lead and manage harvesting (Clear-felling and thinning) operations, roads maintenance and all timber transport as per operational requirements at Tweefontein/ Witklip plantations.
 
Key Accountabilities
• Perform daily operational planning
• Plan and monitor transportation of logs to mills
• Prepare Annual Plan of Operations (APO), tactical plan and ensure implementation
• Plan and prepare for season (summer/winter) and harvesting systems to be used i.e., Ground or Cable system
• Plan for transportation and ensure road planning of timber delivery for all weather condition
• Set targets and manage monthly volumes by coordinating with marketing and plan accordingly
• Consolidate field information on PSION (data device)
• Monitor log production and update progress reports daily
• Manage thinning operations and ensure thinning is conducted timeously as per regime
• Control road maintenance and ensure constant timber supply by planning ahead
• Identify CAPEX needs, monitor sectional budget, and consolidate accordingly
• Monitor monthly reports and identify any deviations
• Ensure procurement of all goods and services required for harvesting operations are in line with SCM policies and procedure
• Manage fuel consumption of vehicles as per area of responsibility
• Manage assets to ensure proper utilisation and maintenance thereof
• Manage vehicle maintenance, equipment and ensure preventative maintenance is performed
• Ensure correct utilisation of equipment by team members
• Extract data from IMS for daily operations
• Ensure adherence of health and safety standards by team members
• Adhere to sound environmental practices and manage firefighting operation
• Monitor Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage
• Organise and chair safety meetings and ensure toolbox talk is conducted
• Organise Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) awareness initiatives and record all incidents on DMS (data system)
• Build and maintain relationship with community regarding firewood, sand mining, fire prevention and illegal activities
• Liaise with internal support functions to ensure cooperation within business
• Establish training needs, coach, and motivate harvesting operations team

Role Mandate
To control all silviculture and fire protection activities in the plantation.
 
Key Accountabilities
• Complete management checklists for each operation on weekly basis
• Provide input into growth stock planning and assessment of sites for re-generation
• Assess if fuel reduction burn is required before planting and monitor in-field fertilizer application
• Perform blanking assessments to replace dead seedlings and assess watering needs of seedlings in winter
• Ensure thinning control is done before commencing thinning and monitor pruning process
• Monitor marking of trees for thinning and ensure alignment of thinning regime
• Execute weed control plan for 0-3 year period and monitor correct application of herbicide
• Execute fuel reduction burns in mature compartments
• Plan fire belts as per Fire Protection Plan, execute annual firebreak preparations and burning of fire breaks
• Monitor management of conservation areas on weeding, erosion control and escapees (weeds)
• Provide input on Operational Plans for all silviculture and thinning work to be done
• Provide input on completion of all operational plans of budget schedules
• Present figures of progress on work done and expenditures during meetings to Supervisors and Contractors
• Report progress of work done to Senior Forester or Plantation Manager on weekly basis
• Issue work to Contractors, monitor production and completed work against operational plans as per Best Operating Practices (BOP)
• Process Goods Received Voucher to ensure work is done and quality is up to standard
• Conduct in-field quality checks for all operations and control teams in field as per BOP
• Monitor safety and control environmental aspects in field as per set standards and perform audit on contractors as per company standards
• Organise safety meetings with safety representatives and management
• Conduct follow up actions on safety reports and submit all safety relevant documents to SHEQ Department
• Perform road condition assessment as part of post-harvest assessment
• Ensure road register is up to date and control plantation road team’s operations
• Monitor vehicles and equipment maintenance schedule to ensure service is performed timeously
• Establish training needs, coach and motivate silviculture operations team

Role Mandate
To plan and control all mechanised thinning and clear-fell activities within harvesting operations.
 
Key Accountabilities
• Contribute on formulation of Annual Plan of Operations (APO) including tactical and operational plans
• Effectively and efficiently perform operational planning
• Monitor consolidated field information on PSION (data device)
• Interpret production information for progress purposes, client - and product mix to ensure that all clients and products are delivered rateably
• System movements between compartments to be pre-planned to minimize production loss
• Maximize log value recovery and fibre utilization by minimising tree damage and waste generation and utilising the value optimisation program of the harvester
• Manage log product inventory
• Monitoring of machine performance, volume production, log quality and landing management and staff
• Ensure Operating Harvesting Plan (OHP) is available for each current harvesting compartment
• Submit OHP for approval to Plantation Manager before commencing operations
• Monitor Log progress reports daily
• Ensure audit preparations and improve controls within agreed timelines
• Perform log quality audits daily and report completed work on PSM
• Complete management checklists for each operation on a weekly basis
• Ensure that toolbox talks are held regularly and monitor compliance of forestry best practices
• Liaise with service providers (OEM`s) to minimise breakdowns and management of mechanise harvesting equipment to ensure maximum availability of equipment and uptime
• Monitor maintenance schedule to ensure service is performed on time and ensure vehicle checklists are completed on daily basis
• Complete checklist for all operations and conduct in-field quality checks as per BOP’s
• Ensure safety of all work aspects as per set safety standards
• Manage safety system for mechanised harvesting
• Complete and control all safety registers and follow up on actions to be conducted
• Report all incidents on DMS (Data Management System) and control environmental aspects in field as per EMS
• Establish training needs, coach and motivate mechanised team
• Perform staff utilisation planning, manage staff performance and productivity

FIELD FORESTER

Role Mandate
To operate in a trainee capacity or under mentorship / direct supervision of an experienced Forester in the control of all the mechanised harvesting systems
 
Key Accountabilities
• Gather/collect information for budget input
• Perform practical field surveys to:
  • Gather information for Forester for planning purposes
  • Gather information for Forester for setting productivity targets
  • Gather information for input into the annual operational plan
• Perform quality checks on Contractor work and identify training needs of Contractors
• Perform safety checks and provide compartment planning for Contractors
• Complete all Compartment Planning and auditing and verify with Line Manager
• Control production of all labour as per Best Operating Procedure (BOP’s)
• Complete checklist for all operations in field as per BOP’s
• Control environmental aspects in field as per Environmental Management System (EMS)
• Control PSM documents and verify for correctness
• Complete safety check lists and participate in safety meetings
• Monitor deviations and non-compliance to standards
• Ensure filing is up to date of safety documents
• Check that registers are up to date in accordance with the schedule
• Perform toolbox talks, risk assessments and vehicle checklist
• Control teams in field as per BOP’s
