Main purpose of the position:
To identify, initiate, investigate, research, plan and record relevant material from sports stories that are complex in nature and produce sports news reports that are fair, accurate and compelling to target audiences.
Key Accountabilities:
- Initiate and cover stories as assigned or commissioned.
- Provide quality, script and clear voice overs, including on air broadcast.
- Investigate and break stories and follow them through to final product before broadcast.
- Maintain special focus area (sports)
- Give informative and well-researched input to live Current Affairs shows and debates; package stories for current affairs programmes and do live crossings to news bulletins.
- Check facts, accuracy and quality of stories.
- Set up interviews and lead discussion for broadcast, including cross overs.
- Meet story deadlines.
- Keep abreast of sports news events/developments.
- Obtain broadcast-quality sound using relevant recording equipment.
Requirements:
- National Diploma in Journalism or Media Studies or equivalent qualification NQF6
- Completed a minimum of 12 months within the SABC Internship Programme, with practical experience in a Reporter/Reporting environment.
- Understanding of regulations and legislation impacting broadcasting
- Sound understanding of current trends in the sports news environment
- Computer literacy
- Ability to interact and manage different stakeholders at different levels
- Understanding of multi-media platform
- Excellent command of both written and spoken language of TV and Radio News to optimise the impact of editorial content.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of SABC News and current affairs production processes and systems.
- Editorial and journalistic acumen
- Good, “sound” knowledge of and interest in TV and Radio, Digital broadcast developments, trends, and technologies, including the media industry.

Position: Senior Reporter – Sport

Main purpose of the position:
To identify, initiate, investigate, research, and produce incisive sports news and current affairs content that is fair, accurate and compelling in accordance with SABC News editorial objectives and the public broadcasting mandate.
Key Accountabilities:
- Conceptualise and produce sports news and current affairs content across platforms in accordance with SABC News editorial objectives and public mandate.
- Keep abreast of sports news/events/developments and their relevance to South Africa, Africa and the international community.
- Present weekly diary of proposed story ideas to the editor.
- Conduct interviews and provide depth and comprehensive treatment on stories for SABC News broadcasting and digital publishing platforms.
- Provide story leads to the editor, break evidence-based stories, and coordinate interviews for various news platforms as required.
- Attend diary meetings and contribute to editorial discussions on self-initiated stories.
- Conduct primary investigations for original, incisive, and compelling content.
- Live tweet coverage of rolling news events and stories.
- Ensure that all treatment of stories adheres to the SABC Editorial Policies, BCCSA and Press Codes as all other broadcast regulations and policies.
- Ensure balance and appropriate contextualisation of stories.
- Support themed coverage and special productions with background information for depth and breadth.
- Contribute audio-visual and textual features and sports news items to digital news platforms.
- Ensure appropriate and audience-friendly visualisation of any numerical and textual data.
- Employ evidence-based insights to generate ground-breaking story ideas and angles.
- Work with relevant think tanks and universities to enrich news production.
- Contribute to panel discussions on matters of journalistic and editorial interest.
- Collaborate with specialist researchers to deliver content-rich stories for all platforms.
- Work closely with the video journalist to ensure visuals and interviews are of the highest standard.
- Work closely with the video editor to ensure the insert is edited to ensure a product of the highest standard.
- Perform post-production tasks as required, including but not limited to, ensuring the transcribing, editing and final mixing of the story.
- Be a reputable and trustworthy representative of SABC News
Requirements:
- National Diploma/Bachelor’s Degree in Journalism/Media Studies - NQF 6/7 or close equivalent.
- 8-years’ proven experience in Journalism, 3 of which must be specific focus on sports news coverage.
- Proven ability to produce for more than one broadcasting platform is a must.
- A well-established digital media presence.
- Proven track record of exceptional of journalistic performance.
- Advanced knowledge and understanding of digital, television and radio news and current affairs production processes and systems.
- Advanced understanding of public broadcasting principles and obligations
- Clear broadcast voice.
- Ability to work under pressure, irregular hours and tight deadlines is essential.
- Advance computer skills (Microsoft, Internet, Dalet/Audacity, and ENPS).
- Exceptional sports news sense and editorial judgement.
- Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail.
- Advanced knowledge of SABC Editorial Policies, broadcast legislation, regulations, policies, and guidelines.
- Must have a valid driver’s license.
