Main Purpose of Position
To provide strategic direction, guidance and management to the station in a cost-effective and efficient manner, to the satisfaction of all stakeholders, in compliance with the license conditions and South African Broadcasting Corporation mandate, in order to maximise audience and revenue opportunities.
 
 
Key Accountabilities
  • Accountable for the overall station success; and managing the station strategically and operationally in line with the SABC’s corporate goals and Public Broadcast mandate.
  • Develop, formulate and implement business plan, in order to deliver on business objectives
  • Identify and deliver to a target audience aligned to station strategy and mandate
  • Ensure development, management and implementation of a programme strategy aligned with target audience and mandate needs and requirements, in order to grow target audience and exploit opportunities to generate revenue
  • Ensure high quality programme content
  • Develop and implement marketing strategy, in order to optimise brand awareness
  • Maintain close liaisons with SABC Sales & Marketing, in order to define stations revenue needs and requirements
  • Support SABC radio airtime sales in identification of revenue opportunities to be exploited by the revenue team
  • Identify and exploit alternative revenue streams
  • Ensure efficient and effective business process and functioning of the station
  • Ensure continual monitoring and managing of station performance in terms of mandate in delivering on target audience
  • Ensure compliance to corporate governance and adherence to SABC policies, procedures and mandate
  • Ensure optimal integration of functions and strategies, in order to achieve objectives
  • Identify new business opportunities, and provide guidance and motivation of station towards new directions and developments
  • Compile and manage the cost-effective utilisation of station budget
  • Cost-effective management of facilities and operations
  • Ensure station stays abreast of developments, in order to maintain competitiveness and innovation
  • Evaluate all business plans in the context of public mandate requirements and potential profitability analysis
  • Build a capable station team in the form of skilled people in all areas and with sound business process and work flow in place
  • Identification of, and ensure optimal utilisation of research, in order to ensure informed decision making
  • Direct, performance manage, develop and motivate the station team
  • Ensure quality technology and facility advisory support, in order to continually improve efficiencies, effectiveness and quality of radio processes
  • Provide continual feedback and information to SABC management and station team regarding operational and strategic status of the stations
  • Liaise with external and internal stakeholders, in order to ensure optimal delivery on station PBS mandate requirements


Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or relevant qualification
  • 6 years radio broadcasting experience, of which 3 years should be in management level
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding radio production processes and systems
  • Understanding of all broadcasting legislation
  • Excellent command of both written and spoken language of the radio station to optimise the impact
  • Experience in planning, budgeting and executing special broadcast and projects
  • Experience in stakeholder management
  • Interpersonal skills
  • Strong problem solving skills
  • Sound knowledge of brand management, marketing, research, sales and the advertising industry
