The above-mentioned position is available in the Operations Department at Robben Island Museum.
The purpose of the job is to oversee scheduled and unscheduled preventative maintenance and repairs to RIM vehicles, including buses, trucks, and trailers. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Repairing, maintaining, and servicing diesel engines used to power machines, such as VW &Volvo buses, Hino trucks, Toyota, Isuzu, Nissan, Mercedes-Benz, trailers, and construction machinery, e.g., JCB and Crane, using hand tools, precision measuring instruments, and machine tools.
- Reconditioning and replacing parts, such as pistons, bearings, gears, valves, and bushings, using engine lathes, boring machines, welding and cutting parts, using arc-welding and flame cutting equipment.
- Examines problems, tests drives, and troubleshoots electrical and mechanical problems using standard testing procedures.
- Disassembling and overhauling internal combustion engines, pumps, transmissions, clutches, and rear ends.
- Ensure workshop safety and cleanliness and abide by safety policies. Identify safety hazards and report unsafe conditions/or violations to the unit manager.
- Performs repairs and replaces defective parts. Performs routine and scheduled maintenance services according to the manufacturer’s specifications.
- Maintains inventory and restocks parts.
- Complete required forms and paperwork for fleet maintenance workshop, including, but not limited to, repair orders, inspection forms.
- Checking buses daily and signing Trip Inspection forms with the drivers.
- Completing daily maintenance and repair logs.
- Writing weekly reports and submitting them to a supervisor or unit manager.
- Be available to attend weekends for vehicle breakdowns and vehicle retrievals, as required.
- Record keeping of all the jobs done and maintaining the workshop area at all times.
Qualification and Experience Requirements
- Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Red Seal or equivalent trade test certificate).
- Minimum of 3 Years’ experience in the field or a related area.
- Code EC1 or EC driver’s license with experience in a workshop specialising in buses or heavy-duty motor vehicles, e.g., buses, trucks, JCB, and cranes.
- Familiar with standard concepts, practices, and procedures within a particular field.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills to find the source of problems/malfunctions and rectify them.
- Excellent Experience working with all parts of vehicles, breakdowns, electrical troubleshooting, shooting, and welding
- Good communication Skills, Report writing skills, and ability to work accurately and independently.
