The Conference and Events Office in the Division of Residential Operations invites suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

The Department
Rhodes University has a diverse range of conference venues that can cater to all conferencing needs. The University is situated in Grahamstown in the Eastern Cape, which is almost equidistant from the major centres of South Africa. This unique part of the country has a lot to offer conference delegates.
Added to this, it can also fulfil most accommodation and catering needs associated with conferences. Our conference and meeting facilities offer a wide range of modern technology and amenities to suit requirements, including expansive tiered theatres which seat up to 420 delegates. Our venues all have high-quality AV, supported by an expert in-house team. Our dedicated team of conference professionals provides full support for the conference administration and delegate accommodation booking. Due to its ideal location and diverse facilities, Rhodes University is the perfect place to host a conference.

Main Objectives
To provide a support mechanism and structure that enables a comprehensive and efficiently administered profit-making sector to the University through the media of conferences, events and any other related matters.

The Requirements
Grade 12 plus approximately 6 years’ relevant experience, where such experience includes: -
  • Previous experience managing and organising conferences & events, and/or working in the conference industry.
  • Previous experience in budget management and reconciliation of accounts.
  • Previous experience in working with computers, particularly Word and Excel. The ability to work on the internet and email is essential. Previous experience of working with databases will be an advantage. 
  • A valid code 8 driver’s license

The Department of Computer Science at Rhodes University is seeking to appoint a Lecturer with expertise in a technical field of Computer Science under the Next Generation of Academics Programme (nGAP) and invites suitably qualified candidates to apply.

Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for the dissemination of knowledge (teaching and learning), creation of knowledge (research) and community engagement, recognising that there are differences in the execution of these responsibilities within the various departments and Faculties.  Academics are also expected to assume some administrative, management and/or leadership duties at the departmental, Faculty and/or University level, and contribute to their profession. 

The Requirements 
  • At least a Master’s degree in a technical research field of Computer Science (security, machine learning, or high-performance computing). Preference will be given to candidates with a PhD or who have made significant progress towards completing a PhD in a technical research field (as above) of Computer Science.
  • Tutoring, facilitation, or conference presentation experience required. No teaching experience is required, but teaching experience in a technical area of Computer Science, including programming, will be an advantage.
  • No research supervision is required.
  • Emerging track record of research publication and/or conference presentations
Some administrative or management experience, albeit in informal contexts, e.g., student or sports clubs, work experience.

The Department
The Department of Statistics at Rhodes University is seeking to appoint a Professor or Associate Professor in the Mathematical Statistical Sciences, or Data Science (Statistical/Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence) or a Professor or Associate Professor with extensive research and supervision in the statistical computational sciences and statistical modelling. The successful candidate will take a leading role in shaping and advancing the Department’s data science and applied statistics programs. The appointee will be expected to contribute to undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and to offer specialized R training.

Main Objectives
All academics are responsible for disseminating knowledge (teaching and learning), creating knowledge (research), and engaging in community engagement, recognising differences in executing these responsibilities within the various departments and faculties.  Professors and Associate Professors are expected to be actively involved in the development and advancement of the discipline through a high level of professional and scholarly engagement. Academics are also expected to assume administrative, management, and/or leadership duties at the departmental, faculty, and/or university levels.
 A Professor and an Associate Professor are to provide academic leadership in the following areas: teaching and learning, research and community engagement, and contribute towards the institution's governance. This professor's leadership contribution should be evidenced at the departmental, faculty, and institutional levels.

The Requirements
  • A PhD either in the Mathematical Statistical Sciences or Data Sciences (Mathematical or Statistical) or Mathematics (Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence), or a senior academic with a PhD and a distinguished track record of publication and supervision of research in the Statistical Computational Sciences and Applied Statistical Modelling.
  • Teaching experience in some of the following disciplinary areas of Statistics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels: Distribution theory; Multivariate Analysis; Generalized Linear Models; Classification; Statistical or Machine Learning; Bayesian Statistics; Financial Statistics; Stochastic Processes; Time Series Analysis; ; Fixed and Mixed Effects Modelling; Generalised Additive Models; Non-linear Models; Data Science and Spacial Statistics. Strong computational proficiency in R is essential.
  • A sustained commitment to academic excellence and leadership is essential. A sustained contribution to academic and professional communities with associated high-quality research published in reputable journals and extensive participation in conferences and a well-developed scholarly network is required.
 
Professor:

KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY 
  1. Teaching in fields of relevance to communication: To develop and manage coursework across the undergraduate and postgraduate programme of relevance to the study and practice of communication. Through such teaching, to develop students’ competence and knowledge both in the study of communication and its practice.
  2. The development and management of communication practices and projects: Initiating and managing partnerships in communication for the School of JMS. To do so primarily for the purpose of opening up opportunities for JMS students and staff to be involved in research and experiential learning opportunities concerned with communication practice.
  3. Conducting research of relevance to communication practice: Collaborating with academic staff in the School of JMS to integrate such research in the school’s experiential learning projects, in particular, Grocotts Mail and Rhodes Music Radio (RMR). Producing and publishing research of relevance to socially engaged communication practice.
 
The Requirements
 
Lecturer
  • A PhD in Communication Studies or a cognate discipline with experience in communication. Candidates who provide evidence of their PhD thesis being under examination will be considered.
  • Some teaching and/or teaching facilitation experience is required. The incumbent should be acquainted with online/ blended teaching, testing, and marking or be willing to acquire these skills immediately once in the job.
