Job Description
The Operations Department has a vacancy for a permanent Cold Chain Assessor in Durban to conduct inspections according to standard protocols and procedures as prescribed through PPECB’s current legislative mandate.
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
- Inspect and certify perishable products.
- Inspect the handling, storage, and transport of perishable products.
- Ensure the correct application of quality management systems, BMS procedures and work instructions.
- Perform administrative tasks.
- Provide continuous support to the Lead Assessor
- Provide technical support to Cold Chain Assessors and Cold chain Inspectors.
- Assist with supervision and training of Cold Chain Assessors.
- Build and maintain good relations with PPECB clients.
- Communicate with various clients on own specific task and outcome of decisions.
- Participate in the relief duty roster.
- Accept the responsibility of continuous self-improvement in their area of responsibility according to the PPECB performance framework.
Requirements:
- A Grade 12 certificate or relevant qualification
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience in various cold chain functions. Please note candidates with less experience but with proven outstanding performance will be considered in line with PPECB's EE policy.
- Proven ability to fulfill 4 cumulative functions within cold chain.
- Competency requirement of minimum 50 credits (Technical) and minimum of 15 credits for (Soft skill) is mandatory.
- Specialist competence on container inspections, cleanliness and PTI, container on board sensor calibration, container loading (normal), Terminal monitoring is mandatory.
- Knowledge and understanding of other related cold chain disciplines will be an advantage.
- Proven track record of training subordinates.
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- The ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Proven track record of taking ownership and being accountable.
- Excellent customer service skills
- A valid code 08 driving license and own reliable vehicle is a requirement for doing the job.

Job Description
The Operations Department in Durban is offering an opportunity for the permanent appointment of an individual in the role of a Lead Assessor. This opportunity starting 1 December 2024- offer the ideal chance for individuals to be exposed to the supervision role within a small team environment.
Operations Supervision is a specialist competency aimed at ensuring the correct application of standards and protocols within the PPECB’s legislative mandate; transfer of skills and monitoring of consistent technical competence within the legislative framework of the PPECB. The primary objective is to ensure compliance to all relevant procedures, protocols, and Service Level Agreements within a defined geographical area.
Responsibilities: Supervision competency: Supervisory roles in Inspection, Food Safety and Export Certification and/or Cold Chain functions related to the specified geographical area. Performance motivation of sub-ordinates within the framework of the PPECB performance motivation system. Ensuring adequate competency levels of staff within the L/D framework. Coordinating compliance to prescribed processes, procedures, and protocols within the framework of the Agricultural Product Standards Act and/or the Perishable Products Export Control Board Act. Ensure correct application of quality management systems, procedures, and work instructions. Ensure adherence to Service Level agreements. Ensuring effective two-way communication internal and external. Performance management of sub-ordinates within the framework of the PPECB performance management system. Administrative tasks and reporting related to the execution of services. Accept the responsibility of continuous self-improvement in their area of responsibility according to the PPECB performance system.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
A tertiary qualification in an agricultural discipline with at least 7 years relevant work experience or a competent senior assessor with at least 10 years relevant work experience. Please note: Candidates with less experience, but with proven outstanding performance will be considered in line with PPECB’s EE policy
Technical competencies on the following Cold Chain principles are mandatory: Normal and Cold Treatment container loading, Normal conventional inspection and loading, container inspection cleanliness and PTI, container on board sensor calibration, terminal monitoring, Cold Treatment conventional vessel calibration and loading, Vessel carrying instruction cold treatment and normal conventional vessels/containers and Precooling certification.
Soft skills: must have attended the Ithrive and Supervisory courses is mandatory.
Knowledge, understanding and experience of all inspection and/ or cold chain services relevant to the specified geographical area.
Must have acted in the capacity of a Lead Assessor and managed a small team is mandatory.
