Job Description
Purpose:
To independently conduct Cold Chain Inspections or Services according to standard protocols, work instructions and procedures as prescribed through PPECB‘s legislative mandate.
 
Responsibilities:
  • Container loading.
  • Temperature monitoring in cold stores.
  • The minimum administrative tasks associated with job level.
  • Communicate with various clients on own specific tasks and outcome of decisions.
  • Build and maintain good relations with PPECB clients.
  • Continuous self-improvement in their area of responsibility according to the PPECB performance framework.
 
Job Requirements
  • A grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Experience in various cold chain functions, in particular container loading.
  • Computer literate.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to work with minimum supervision.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • A valid code 08 driving license and own reliable vehicle is a requirement for doing the job.

Operations Supervisory Development Opportunity
The Operations Department is offering developmental opportunities for potential Talent to gain practical exposure to supervisory competencies while Acting in the role of Chief Inspector.
  • Acting Chief Inspector (CI) – Groblersdal
This is a developmental, acting. opportunity - starting 01 April 2024 - which offer an ideal chance for individuals to be exposed to a supervisory role within a small team environment.
 
OVERVIEW OF EXPOSURE:
Operations Supervision is a specialist competency aimed at ensuring the correct application of standards and protocols within the PPECB’s legislative mandate; transfer of skills and monitoring of consistent technical competence within the legislative framework of the PPECB.
 The primary objective is to ensure compliance to all relevant procedures, protocols and Service Level Agreements within a defined geographical area.
 
Responsibilities:
Supervision competency:
  • Supervisory roles in Inspection, Food Safety and Export Certification and/or Cold Chain functions related to the specified geographical area.
  • Performance motivation of sub-ordinates within the framework of the PPECB performance motivation system.
  • Ensuring adequate competency levels of staff within the Harmonization framework.
  • Coordinating compliance to prescribed processes, procedures and protocols within the framework of the Agricultural Product Standards Act and/or the Perishable Products Export Control Board Act.
  • Ensure correct application of quality management systems, procedures and work instructions.
Technical competency:
  • Administrative tasks and reporting related to the execution of services.
  • Ensure adherence to Service Level agreements.
  • Ensuring effective two-way communication internal and external.
  • Inspection and certification of perishable products and/or the handling, storage and transport of perishable products.
  • The successful developmental candidates will be required to be semi-functional. 
 
Job Requirements
  • CI: A tertiary qualification in an agricultural discipline with at least 7 years relevant work experience or a competent senior inspector with at least 10 years relevant work experience of which 3 years in a Senior Inspector role
  • Experience in Food Safety audits will be an advantage
 
Technical competencies:
  • Knowledge and experience on the following:
    • Citrus and container loading
  • Knowledge, understanding and experience of all inspection and/ or cold chain services relevant to the specified geographical area.

APPLICATION & SELECTION PROCESS:
Applications will be considered by means of a multiple-hurdle process; consisting of pre-screening of applications; formal interviews; followed by assessments for short-listed candidates. Formal developmental feedback will be provided to unsuccessful candidates to assist them with their PDP’s (Personal Development Plans).
The candidates with the strongest performance in the above process will be appointed. There will be an Acting allowance applicable for the period. The duration of this opportunity is for approximately four months or until product volumes for the Deciduous season have reduced to the extent that the span of work can be easily accommodated by the permanent human resources.

Job Description
The Operations Department has a vacancies for a Senior Inspector to conduct inspection of products and equipment according to standard protocols as prescribed through PPECB’s legislative mandate.
 
Job Description
  • Inspect and certify perishable products.
  • Inspect the handling, storage and transport of perishable products.
  • Ensure the correct application of quality management systems, BMS procedures and work instructions.
  • Perform administrative tasks.
  • Mentoring of junior staff.
  • Provide continuous support to Chief Inspector.
  • Provide technical support to Inspectors.
  • Assist with training of Inspectors.
  • Build and maintain good relations with PPECB clients.
  • Communicate with various clients on own specific task and outcome of decisions
  • Participate in the relief duty roster
  • Accept the responsibility of continuous self-improvement in their area of responsibility according to the PPECB performance framework.
 
Job Requirements
  • A National Diploma in an Agricultural discipline with relevant work experience as a competent Inspector.
  • Proven competence with 90 technical credits and 45 Soft Skills credits.
  • Proven competence in 5 Main products of which Container loading, Blueberries, Pome, Citrus and Table Grapes are compulsory.
  • Practical experience and/or exposure in Dried Fruit, Bitter Apricot Kernels, Vegetables inspection and container loading will be advantageous.
  • Thorough understanding and theoretical knowledge of the processes involved in product inspection of fresh produce, cold chain activities and food safety.
  • Excellent proven experience on implementation and maintenance of all regional processes and databases.
  • Experience as senior within the inspections, cold chain and harmonization strategy will be to the advantage of applicants.
  • Computer Literacy.
