AGRICULTURAL RESEARCH COUNCIL (ARC)
The Agricultural Research Council (ARC) is a premier science institution that conducts research with partners, develops human capital and foster innovation in support of the agricultural sector. It provides diagnostic, laboratory, analytical, agricultural engineering services, post-harvest technology development, agrochemical evaluation, consultation and advisory services, food processing technology services as well as various surveys and training interventions. Through its wider network of research institutes and experimental farms, the ARC provides a strong scientific base and a broadly distributed technology transfer capacity to the entire agricultural industry in South Africa.
The ARC-Plant Health and Protection (ARC-PHP) seeks to appoint a highly skilled, experienced and dynamic person to the following position at Vredenburg Campus, Stellenbosch:
RE-ADVERT SENIOR RESEARCHER (SOILBORNE DISEASES)
Key Performance Areas:
Project management & coordination
• Initiates, coordinates and manages multi-disciplinary projects, budgets, and equipment and research materials.
• Manages people within projects and ensures optimal utilisation; risk management and mitigation progress reporting.
Research development
• Developing, writing and negotiation of project proposals with research funders for national and international funded research.
• Actively sources new national/ international research opportunities and collaborations.
• Plans and co-ordinates research activities, independently conducts specialist research/technical projects, diagnostics, and other services across projects, provides comprehensive recommendations and approves final reports
• Manages and ensures compliance to quality standards.
Scientific service delivery and technology transfer
• Disseminates research results; renders expert diagnostic, technical, and other services and consults at a national/international level; exploits intellectual property developments and assist in its development.
• Identifies and pursues new business opportunities.
• Generates income; provides training, investigates and evaluates new technologies.
Research collaboration
• Engages stakeholders in area of responsibility nationally and internationally.
Human capacity development
• Develops technical capacity.
• Identifies and participates in own learning opportunities.
Requirements:
• PhD in Plant Pathology with 5 years’ post PhD experience in research on soilborne diseases with emphasis on molecular characterization and taxonomy.
• Relevant experience in applied plant pathology, including planning and execution of glasshouse trials.
• Proven record of root health analyses and product efficacy testing.
• Proven record of peer-reviewed publications as main author or co-author in international journals.
• A track record of post-graduate student mentorship.
• Track record of successful funding proposals.
• Registration with relevant scientific registration body.
• A valid code 08/EB driver’s licence.
