SAFETY COORDINATOR: OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH, SAFETY & WELLNESS

Qualifications and experience required:
  • B. Tech/National Diploma in Safety Management/Environmental Health.
  • Completion of the Safety and Management Training Course (SAMTRAC) advantageous.
  • A valid Code EB driver’s licence.
  • Computer literacy in Office applications.
  • One to two years’ practical experience in Safety Management after completion of a recognised apprenticeship or pupillage, inclusive of experience in task analysis and course design.

  • Report-writing and communication skills.
  • Analytical, planning and coordination skills.
  • Supervisory, organising, implementing, planning and monitoring skills.
  • In-depth application of the procedures, policies and laws applicable to the functionality.

Job purpose:
Coordinating tasks/activities pertaining to implementation, monitoring and reporting sequences of outcomes associated with Safety Management through the coordination of operations associated with the enforcement of policies, procedures and practices dictating health and safety in the Municipality, and execution of investigations of accidents/investigations.

Qualifications and experience required:
  • Grade 12 (Matric) plus one-year relevant Trade Certificate.
  • A valid Code EB driver’s licence.
  • One to two years’ experience.

  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English and at least one other official local language.
  • Analytical, technical and communication skills in assessing, understanding and delivering business requirements.
  • Good report-writing skills.
  • Good organisational, problem-solving, and supervisory skills.

The incumbent will be responsible for:
  • Maintaining an appropriate filing system to support safekeeping of documents.
  • Monitor health and safety requirements in terms of the OSH Act during inspections.
  • Provide feedback to supervisor on specific building activities by processing and consolidation of information/complaints recorded and/or extracting specific reports.
Due to the nature of this position, it is required that the candidate be physically fit and able-bodied, and as part of the selection process, will therefore be required to undergo a fitness test at the NMBM Wellness Centre.
 
Special conditions attached to the post:
The incumbent will be required to work after hours when required.
 
Job purpose:
Performing on site tasks and activities associated with the mentoring, quality control and monitoring of building construction activities entered into by the housing delivery branch. Providing data for generating reports detailing the status of the building construction/projects initiating payments and/or recommending cancellation of contracts due to poor workmanship as appropriate.

  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • The nature of the job design necessitates that the person appointed be physically fit and able-bodied.

  • Registration with Environmental Assessment Practitioners’ Association South Africa (EPASA) or similar professional body.
  • Computer literacy – MS Office applications.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • In-depth applications of the procedures, laws and by-laws applicable to functionality.
  • Five years’ relevant experience in the field.
  • Three to four years in middle management.
 
Key attributes and competencies:
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English and at least one other official local language.
  • Good interpersonal, conflict resolution, negotiation, problem-solving and organisational skills.

Initiating, managing, coordinating, facilitating and directing the development, implementation, monitoring, evaluation and reporting sequences and outcomes associated with plans and programs designed to accomplish key strategic service delivery objectives with respect to Environmental Management through activities associated with strategic planning, the development, administration and maintenance of management plans for Coastal Nelson Mandela Metro Open Space System (NM MOSS) and Reserves and Natural Areas, the formation of Conservancies, evaluation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and Land Use matters, sustainable development and implementation of the Environmental Management System and development of strategy for climate change, compliance with international environmental standards and performance of related administrative and personnel processes supporting accomplishment of service delivery objectives encapsulated in the Integrated Development Plan (IDP).
