The National Library of South Africa wishes to make the following appointment at its Cape Town Campus:
Manager: Preservation and Conservation Services

Salary scale: R634 628.00 - R740 907.00 Total Cost-to-Company
The objectives of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) are to contribute to socio-economic, cultural, educational, scientific and innovative development by collecting, recording, preserving and making available the national documentary heritage and promoting an awareness and appreciation thereof, by fostering information literacy, and by facilitating access to the world’s information resources.
The NLSA invites applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment on a permanent basis, as Manager: Preservation and Conservation Services. The successful individual will be based at the Cape Town Campus but will work across both the Cape Town and Pretoria Campuses. The successful candidate will report to the Director: Preservation and Conservation Services.
KEY PERFORMANCE ARES:
Co-ordinate Preservation and Conservation Services on both Campuses.
Interact with Bibliographic Services and Collections Management and Information Access Services Departments to support preservation goals and maintain the Collections.
Manage and develop Preservation and Conservation Services’ programmes and product range, including:
- Reprographics and Digitisation Services
- Conservation and Restoration Services
- Stack Maintenance Services
Manage the Preservation and Conservation Centre located at the NLSA on behalf of the International Federation for Library Associations (IFLA).
Co-ordinate Disaster Management Planning and Recovery operations.
Conduct Preservation and Conservation training for the Library and Information Sector and other libraries of Legal Deposit.
Ensure effective internal controls and compliance with all audit requirements.
Identify and mitigate operational risks.
Manage human resources through performance management, skills development and training.
Be able to identify and recommend improved systems for the digital preservation of heritage assets in line with best practice standards.
Assist in identifying and initiating research opportunities and contribute to local and international publications.
Compile and ensure timely signing off of monthly, quarterly and annual Preservation and Conservation reports.

MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A relevant Bachelor degree in Library and Information Sciences (LIS) or equivalent qualification (NQF7)
A Honours Degree in Library and Information Services will be an added advantage
Post graduate research in preservation and conservation of library collections or related field will be an added advantage
3 to 5 years of relevant work experience in a historical/digital Preservation and Conservation environment
A minimum of 3 to 5 years of supervisory experience
KEY COMPETENCIES AND ATTRIBUTES
Proven leadership and supervisory skills
In-depth knowledge of Preservation and Conservation Management
Advanced knowledge of techniques and methods for preserving Library Collections
Sound knowledge of Disaster Management planning and recovery in a library environment
Knowledge of digital preservation and digitisation techniques
People management and conflict management and resolution skills
Knowledge of meta data creation and management
