The National Library of South Africa wishes to make the following appointment at its Pretoria Campus:
Director: Preservation and Conservation Services

Salary scale: R933 975 – R1 090 876 Total Cost-to-Company
The objectives of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) are to contribute to socio-economic, cultural, educational, scientific and innovative development by collecting, recording, preserving and making available the national documentary heritage and promoting an awareness and appreciation thereof, by fostering information literacy, and by facilitating access to the world’s information resources.
The NLSA invites applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment on a full time basis. The successful individual will be based at the Pretoria Campus but will work across both the Pretoria and Cape Town Campuses. The successful candidate will report to the Executive Director: Core Programmes.
KEY PERFORMANCE ARES:
Provide leadership for conservation and restoration priorities including de-acidification
Co-ordinate and liaise with Bibliographic Services and Collections Management and Information Access Services Departments to support preservation goals and maintain the Collections.
Manage and develop the Department’s services and product range, including Reprographic and Digitisation Services.
Provide leadership for Stack Maintenance Services.
Manage the Preservation and Conservation Centre located at the NLSA on behalf of the International Federation for Library Associations (IFLA).
Manage Preservation and Conservation training for the Library and Information Sector and other libraries of Legal Deposit.
Identify and recommend improved administrative systems for better, effective and efficient workflows supported by documented processes and procedures.
Develop and manage the budget in line with PFMA requirements and National Treasury regulations.
Ensure effective internal controls and compliance with all audit requirements.
Prepare and manage the Preservation and Conservation Services’ budget, monitor expenditure and review the Department’s strategy.
Develop income generating products and services in response to client needs and market opportunities.
Identify risks and ensure compliance and adherence to governance structures.
Network and liaise with suppliers, clients and partners in the field of Preservation and Conservation Services, both nationally and internationally.
Provide national and international leadership in the field of Preservation and Conservation through participation in national and international professional associations.
Continually identify and recommend improved systems for the digital preservation and heritage assets preservation in line with best practice standards.
Proactively identify and initiate research opportunities and contribute to local and international publications.
Prepare and manage the Preservation and Conservation Services’ budget, monitor expenditure and review the Department’s strategy.

MINIMUM EDUCATION QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
A relevant Honours Degree in Library and Information Sciences (LIS) or equivalent qualification (NQF 8)
A Master’s degree in Library and Information Sciences will be an added advantage
A minimum of 5 to 10 years’ relevant work experience in a historical/digital Preservation and Conservation environment.
A minimum of 3 to 5 years of supervisory/ middle management experience
KEY COMPETENCIES AND ATTRIBUTES
Proven leadership and supervisory skills
In-depth knowledge of Preservation and Conservation Management
Advanced knowledge of techniques and methods for preserving Library Collections
Sound knowledge of disaster management planning and recovery in a library environment
Knowledge of digital preservation and digitisation techniques
High level of people management and conflict management and resolution skills
Knowledge of meta data creation and management
