Librarian: Preservation and Conservation Services x 2 positions

The objectives of the National Library of South Africa (NLSA) are to contribute to socio-economic, cultural, educational, scientific and innovative development by collecting, recording, preserving and making available the national documentary heritage and promoting an awareness and appreciation thereof, by fostering information literacy, and by facilitating access to the world’s information resources.
The NLSA invites applications from suitably qualified persons for appointment on a permanent basis in the position of Librarian: Preservation and Conservation Services. One successful candidate will be based at the NLSA’s Pretoria Campus and one at the NLSA’s Cape Town Campus.
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS
Daily supervision and management of the work and operations of the stack Assistants.
Shelving on a daily basis. Shelf-reading on a rotational basis. Stocktaking projects when assigned.
Provide stack management services on the collections of the NLSA.
Organisation and maintenance of the collections.
Identify materials that are in need of repair or conservation treatment.
Collect new arrivals from the Acquisitions Unit.
Co-ordinate movement of all materials transferred from the on-site collections to the off-site storage.
Assign growth space for new acquisitions in the various stack rooms.
Maintain cleanliness of, and order in, the stack rooms.
Advise on the relocation of collections in the various stack rooms. Identify areas in the collections that may need shifting due to lack of growth room.
Assist Information Access Services in locating call numbers within the stack rooms.
Assist in carrying out of shifting projects devoted to planning for the growth of the collections.
Identify end panel labels that need to be replaced.
Identify and report building problems which might affect the collections.
Assist Information Access Services with retrieval when required.
Assist with collections planning and related projects.
Assist with discarded material.
Digitisation of the NLSA Collections
Identify and recommend collections to be considered for digitisation.
Participate, and contribute positively, in the NLSA’s five-year strategic plan with special emphasis on digitisation of documentary heritage collections.
Other Responsibilities
Disaster Management with regards to the stack rooms.
Plan and manage Disaster Management workshops nationally.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending relevant training sessions and workshops to improve service delivery.
Record statistics for monthly, quarterly and annual reporting.
Provide input on policies and standard operating procedures as needed.
Be able to transfer skills as and when required to do so
Be willing to rotate in similar roles as requested
MINIMUM EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
B.Bibl. or equivalent qualification, a post graduate degree in Librarianship will be an added advantage.
1 - 2 years’ experience in a Library environment
Thorough knowledge of Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme, Library of Congress Classification, and general working knowledge of other classification systems used in libraries.
Ability to sort and order materials efficiently and systematically.
Ability to initiate and maintain co-operative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, managers and with other libraries.
Ability to work independently and follow through on tasks with minimal direction and supervision.
Ability to manage and prioritise tasks and perform them effectively in a fast paced environment.
Demonstrable proficiency and capabilities with personal computers and standard computer office applications, eg. Microsoft Suite.
