NATIONAL HEALTH LABORATORY SERVICES (NHLS)
 
GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS 
1. If you meet the requirements, kindly forward a concise CV to The relevant Practitioner/Administrator (Human Resources) by email or logging on to the NHLS career page http://careers.nhls.ac.za (I-Recruitment), quoting the reference number and the job title. 
2. Response Email addresses of the relevant HR representative and or Region is supplied at the end of each regional adverts. This position is for a scientist in the Laboratory for Antimalarial Resistance Monitoring and Malaria Operational Research in the Centre for Emerging, Zoonotic and Parasitic Diseases. The successful candidate will conduct research and provide genetic support to ensure the successful completion of a malaria amplicon sequencing project. 
 
Key Job Responsibilities: ■Perform ethical and relevant research (basic and applied) that will provide new information on the malaria parasite which will promote the NHLS’s goal of becoming a leader in malaria research ■Apply specialised knowledge in order to improve the detection and diagnosis of malaria and provide interpretation of sequencing results so that appropriate malaria elimination interventions can be implemented ■ Contribute to the teaching of students (from NHLS or academic institutes), health professionals and technical staff in research skills in order to develop research capacity ■Train students, health professionals and technical staff in laboratory skills and bioinformatics to ensure that they can deliver improved and effective diagnostic services ■ Write scientific reports and papers for submission to scientific, peer reviewed journals and congresses in order to disseminate new research findings ■ Maintain project documentation, in order to create a scientific audit trail■ Contribute to translation of research to enhance the diagnostic platform and policy■ Maintain total quality management of the laboratory to ensure accurate and reliable results of research analyses.

To perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease under the supervision of a medical technologist or scientist 
 
Key Job Responsibilities 
Laboratory Safety Compliance: 
■Displays good laboratory practice in all aspects of work ■ Ensure compliance with health and safety measures at all times-each day/month/year■ Adherence to decontamination procedures upheld 100% of the time (e.g. daily bench decontamination, bio-hazardous spills, and instrument decontamination spills post service 1■00 % compliance on recording of temperature reading in accordance with relevant SOP’s 
 
Laboratory Process (Produced laboratory work and /or Laboratory Reports) 
■Daily receive, sort and prioritize patient samples and isolated according to laboratory SOP ■ Daily analyse patient samples and isolates according to laboratory SOP for suitability relevant to the diagnostic, reference and surveillance functions of the Centre ■ Ensures the reliable and accurate results are generated 100% of the time ■Daily adherence to set turnaround time for each tests onsite (NB) time up to the preliminary reports ■ Daily filing and storage of specimens, be responsible for the long-term storage of isolates on the Pathogen Asset Control System ■ Checks abnormal results according to laboratory SOP and reports results according to SOP ■ Prepare stains and slides for specialized testing ■Daily documents data in own area of work ▪ Ascertain suitability of samples and isolates■ Prepare reagents and media where applicable ■ Enter test results on LIS, complete technical records to ensure that results are reported timeously to stakeholders

Quality Assurance:
