NATIONAL HEALTH LABORATORY SERVICES (NHLS)
GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS
1. If you meet the requirements, kindly forward a concise CV to The relevant Practitioner/Administrator (Human Resources) by email or logging on to the NHLS career page http://careers.nhls.ac.za (I-Recruitment), quoting the reference number and the job title.

Coordinate the Data 4 Health project by advancing the core activities of the public health bulletin, supporting scientific writing and data to policy activities.
Key Job Responsibilities

This position requires the incumbent to apply specialised knowledge in order to perform tests, conduct research and assist with other laboratory functions in line with the centres strategic objectives, with regard to parasitic diseases of medical importance.
Key Job Responsibilities
■Performs specialised reference parasitology tests so that patients receive the appropriate treatment ■Performs parasitology surveillance functions, including sample processing, data capturing and data analysis, to ensure a comprehensive knowledge is built up about the relevant parasites ■Performs molecular biology tests to enable the laboratory to study parasites in more depth and enhance knowledge and keep abreast with current research ■Perform R&D processes and source funding for projects under supervision to improve laboratory services ■Actively participates in the laboratory’s quality management systems to ensure the laboratory produces accurate and reliable results ■Performs administrative, procurement and equipment maintenance duties to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory ■Assists with parasitology quality assessment programmes to help teach and upgrade the quality of laboratories ■Assist with teaching and training offered by the laboratory to ensure that the participants are taught the correct methodology and their knowledge is improved ■Present at research forums, journal clubs and conferences and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts, as necessary.

Key Job Responsibilities

Key Job Responsibilities
■Receive queries and ensure that they are resolved timeously ■Work as part of a team based at the Centre for Respiratory Diseases and Meningitis to facilitate sound administration on assigned projects ■Assist with travel arrangements for the centre ■Facilitate proper reporting-management and report writing ■Responsible for ensuring that all new staff in the Centre will be received and inducted into the Centre provided with the resources required to fulfil their position (e.g. computer, office space, pin codes and pass cards) ■Keep and maintain efficient administrative support to the Centre to ensure maximum efficiency and smooth running of the centre including review and approval of office/laboratory supply acquisitions ■Handle general incoming and outgoing correspondence, (telephone, email, fax etc.) including taking any necessary action and maintaining accurate records ■Develop and maintain relationships with key stakeholders within NICD NHLS, the study sites, and other relevant organisations in order to improve administrative processes, communications and information flows ■Responsible for organizing local and international meetings and workshops from conception through to completion, including liaison with international coordinators/ budget holders, suppliers and venue; also including liaison with participants and organising travel and accommodation ■Perform routine administrative (minute taking, filling, faxing, follow up on outstanding issues etc.) duties for the centre to ensure that the centre operates smoothly ■Receive and distribute courier parcels to ensure that the courier deliveries are efficiently distributed within the division ■Prepare operational reports and schedules, formatting and compiling monthly/ project reports to ensure efficiency and to collate documents and make sure they get handed in on time.

■Maintain the laboratory equipment in order to avoid unnecessary shut-down times and service interruptions ■Run quality control procedures to ensure that accurate results can be generated ■Prepare specimens prior to analysis to ensure suitability for the specific test to be carried out ■Carry out routine testing procedures on specimens in order to obtain accurate results to be used for HIV Rapid , post market surveillance panel and internal quality control panel preparation, under the general supervision of the senior qualified medical technologist ■Review and maintain records of results to ensure that correct and valid results were obtained. ■Observe health and safety regulations while working to ensure own and others' safety at all times ■Give input into the writing of SOPs in order to assist with improving the standard of the laboratory ■Maintain a specimen inventory register for storage and retrieval of HIV Rapid, post market surveillance and IQC panels to ensure continuous availability of stock for evaluation purposes.

Key Job Responsibilities
Laboratory Safety Compliance
■ Ensure Compliance with health and safety measures at all times- each day/month/ year ■Adherence to decontamination procedures (e.g. daily bench decontamination, bio-hazardous spills, and instrument decontamination spills post service) ■ Recording of temperature readings in accordance with relevant SOP’s.
Laboratory Process (Produced laboratory work and /or Laboratory Reports)
■ Receive, verify and process specimens on a daily basis as per SOP’s■ Test patient samples according to laboratory SOPs ■Ensure that reliable and accurate results are generated ■ Adherence to set turnaround Times for each testing and reporting ■Daily filing and storage of specimen.
Maintained and Operated Equipment
■ Perform equipment maintenance as per schedule ■Compliance and application of SOP’s ■Ensure sufficient stock is available as per guidelines ■Performance of quality checks ■ Maintenance of reagent log sheets (logging of reagents, date of receipt, use and expiry and loading on instruments) and completion of equipment maintenance records.
Quality Assurance
■Prepare quality control materials (IQC) as per lab SOP and run routine IQC sample as per SOP and EQA ■Identify IQC and report deviations to supervisor ■Daily document log sheets (room temp, fridges etc.).
Teaching, Training, Research
■Attend CPD activities /lectures.

Conducts and monitors a variety of diagnostic analyses of patient specimens to provide accurate laboratory test results to aid in and confirm clinical diagnosis and treatment therapies.
Key Job Responsibilities

Key Job Responsibilities
Laboratory Safety Compliance
■ Ensure Compliance with health and safety measures at all times- each day/month/ year ■Adherence to decontamination procedures (e.g. daily bench decontamination, bio-hazardous spills, and instrument decontamination spills post service) ■ Recording of temperature readings in accordance with relevant SOP’s.
Laboratory Process (Produced laboratory work and /or Laboratory Reports)

To promote, build expertise and provide high-level bioinformatics solutions to all NICD users involve in both surveillance and research activities.
Key Job Responsibilities
■Engage with NICD users and assist with next-generation sequencing (NGS) data analysis ■Perform basic and advanced analysis and interpretation on data produced from next generation sequencing systems (e.g. Illumina, PacBio or Ion torrent platforms) as well as develop, improve, modify, and operate data analysis pipelines ■Conduct and initiate research in the area of NGS data analysis ■Work closely with researchers and collaborators to generate/provide data analysis reports, project reports and perform custom analysis as requested ■Participate in training employees or staff with bioinformatics skills and build confidence amongst users to analyze and understand their own data resulting in improved and effective research outcomes ■Perform a total Data Quality Management of the facility which involves the implementation and monitoring of systems to ensure accurate and reliable results ■Monitor and manage bioinformatics requests or projects to ensure objectives are achieved in terms of turnaround times, cost control, quality and service ■Responsible for overseeing and monitoring of software tools and data resources to ensure smooth operation of the sequencing facility ■Develop and implement costing model for Bioinformatics solutions ■Maintain hardware and software infrastructure ■Establish strong collaborative links with experts in the area of bioinformatics.
