GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS

Key Job Responsibility

Minimum requirements & key competency 
■ BSc degree with Chemistry as a major subject (or Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (NQF 6) ■ Honours/Higher Diploma in Chemistry (Desirable). ■ 4 (four) years’ appropriate experience at a similar level. ■ Knowledge of the types and uses of analytical equipment such as a gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, mass spectrometer, ion chromatograph, spectrophotometer, atomic absorption spectrometer. ■ Rudimentary computer literacy (Spreadsheet, Database, Word processors). ■ Sound and in-depth knowledge of analyses of foodstuffs and cosmetics as per Foodstuffs, Cosmetics and Disinfectants Act, Act 54 of 1972. ■ Sound and in-depth knowledge of analyses of biological material for the presence of drugs and poisons. Key Job Responsibility 
■ Ensure that the productivity of the section is maintained. (*norm = 150 blood alcohol samples/analyst/week, 15 toxicology cases/analyst/week and 80 food tests/analyst/month [one food test = one food sample, tested in duplicate]). ■ Oversee administrative duties and analytical service of the section, ■ Ensure staff members within the Section adhere to the NHLS policies e.g., leave, PMDS assessments done in time, code of conduct etc. ■ Ensure implementation of preventive maintenance plans for instruments. ■ Ensure implementation of LIMS in collaboration with the LIMS Administrator. ■ Check/review cases of analysts in the section. ■ Put controls in place to ensure analysts correct result, reports, and accurate court testimony. ■ Handle queries, complaints and to prioritize samples/cases. ■ Provide monthly statistics and information ■ Guard against any unauthorized, irregular, or fruitless expenditure. ■ Ensure that invoices, delivery notes and service reports are timeously captured ■ Ensure that reports of authorized samples are issued and filed. ■ Order technical critical supplies and arrange for servicing of equipment in section. ■ Manage the inventory (assets and consumables) of the section. ■ Implement/adherence to ISO 17025: 2017 in the section. ■ Analyse at least one case (Food and Toxicology) or one batch (Blood Alcohol) per quarter. ■ Put quality control measures in place, even if not accredited. ■ Work according to the management review schedule and implement corrective actions, even if not accredited and in collaboration with the TQM. ■ Ensure partaking in proficiency testing schemes. ■ Use validated methods if accredited, and to have a validation schedule if not accredited. ■ Have documented SOP’s and methods. ■ Have a register for certified standards and reference material to indicate expiry dates etc. ■ Ensure that staff is competent and trained to discharge their duties. ■ Compliance with the health and safety act in the section. ■Ensure adherence to the requirements of the safety manual, documented security policies and housekeeping documents of the Laboratory. ■ Implement corrective action after safety inspections. ■ Monitor the working environment (e.g., air-con in instrument labs, safety showers operational etc.) in your Section in collaboration with the TQM. 
 
Minimum requirements & key competency

Main Purpose of the Job 
Provide a forensic analytical chemistry service to the judicial system and health authorities on behalf of the NHLS. 
 
Key Job Responsibility 
Analyse samples: 
■ Produce analytical results [Toxicology/Food/Blood Alcohol] according to the national norm. ■ To complete a sample which entails the extraction, analysis, data interpretation and processing and final result recorded. ■ Produce analytical results for prioritised Toxicology/Food/Blood Alcohol cases.
 
Work according to Quality Control Procedures: 
 Follow quality control procedures (QC charts completed, results checked as required, take part in proficiency schemes etc.) ■ Work according to SOP’s of section (complete logbooks, registers etc.) ■ Present accurate court testimony. ■ To ensure correctness of typed/ LIMS generated report (and statement of compliance for the food section). 
 
Follow Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) – health and safety: 
 Adhere to the requirements of the safety manual, waste disposal procedures and housekeeping requirements of this Laboratory. 
 
Follow Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) – security: 
 Maintain integrity of the work done at the Laboratory by following the security procedures. 
 
Perform Case Related Administrative related duties: 
 Preserve chain of evidence of samples and accompanying documentation. ■ Process raw data using various pre-installed software packages. ■ Compile a case file and submit to the supervisor/mentor for checking the correctness of results. ■ Ensure correctness of reports.

Main Purpose of the Job 
To manage a laboratory to ensure achievement of a cost effective and high quality service in line with customer and business needs. 
 
Key Job Responsibility

Main Purpose of the Job

Main Purpose of the Job 
To develop, monitor and continually improve the effectiveness of the quality management system of the diagnostic laboratories and departments within a region to the relevant international standard/s and NHLS policies and procedures.
 
Key Job Responsibility 
■ To develop quality management system policies and procedures in line with the international standard in order to provide effective efficient laboratory services. ■ To advise the Area Manager / Business Manager and facilitate implementation of the QMS to international standards throughout the region in order for laboratories to produce high quality laboratory results ■ To advise Area Manager / Business Manager to obtain accreditation or certification to international standards within the region to meet the NHLS strategic objectives ■ To facilitate the maintenance of the accredited / certified sites within the region in order to maintain high quality standards ■ To monitor the QMS in the region by auditing management processes and assessing technical procedures in order to monitor the quality management system in the region ■ To provide technical expertise to laboratories on QMS including PT Schemes and on site verification protocols in order to maintain quality management systems in laboratories in the region ■ To provide support on clearance of non conformances raised internally and externally, to all laboratories / departments in the region ■ To review the implementation of the QMS by QA meetings and Management review meetings and report to inform the National QA Manager and Area Manager on the performance of the laboratories / departments in the region. ■ To mentor and coach relevant groups in QMS and QA related subjects to all relevant staff within the NHLS by training and advising ■ To ensure the procurement of products and services are performed in accordance with regulations and NHLS policies and procedures.
