GUIDELINES TO APPLICANTS

This position requires the incumbent to apply specialised knowledge in order to perform tests, conduct research and assist with other laboratory functions in line with the centre’s strategic objectives, with regard to parasitic diseases of medical importance.
Key Job Responsibilities
■Performs specialised reference parasitology tests so that patients receive the appropriate treatment ■Performs parasitology surveillance functions, including sample processing, data capturing and data analysis, to ensure a comprehensive knowledge is built up about the relevant parasites
■Performs molecular biology tests to enable the laboratory to study parasites in more depth and enhance knowledge and keep abreast with current research ■Perform R&D processes and sources funding for projects under supervision to improve laboratory services ■Actively participates in the laboratory’s quality management systems to ensure the laboratory produces accurate and reliable results ■Performs administrative, procurement and equipment maintenance duties to ensure the smooth running of the laboratory ■Assists with parasitology quality assessment programmes to help teach and upgrade the quality of laboratories ■Assist with teaching and training offered by the laboratory to ensure that the participants are taught the correct methodology and their knowledge is improved ■Presents at research forums, journal clubs and conferences and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts, as necessary.

To provide support for all the existing activities of the unit with specific reference to epidemiological support for the WRC-funded project ‘Detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater’ to play a key role in linking the CVI data to broader NICD COVID response to ensure that available laboratory component data can be utilized effectively for epidemiological applications with specific reference to surveillance and outbreak response.
Key Job Responsibilities
■Initiate, develop and implement existing and new epidemiologic studies and surveillance programmes relevant to detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. Activities include drafting of protocols, study design, data collection and management, data entry, data cleaning, data analysis and report writing ■Strengthen systems for accessing study data for epidemiological applications with specific reference to the results dashboard and web-based interface for SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater ■Provide analyses and interpret data and to ensure that accurate data is available for trend analysis and management decisions ■Draft template reports, prepare data and first drafts for review, and distribute fortnightly or monthly reports on SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater ■Deliver presentations to appropriate internal and external audiences including local governments, health departments, laboratory staff on aspects of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater in order to enhance general awareness ■Keep up to date with relevant, current and emerging research, methods and technologies to ensure personal growth and development, perform appropriate research and publish in relevant scientific journals ■Support outbreak investigation (including field visits, data collection, cleaning and analysis and report writing) of any pathogens under surveillance by CVI in the event of an outbreak.

The surveillance officer will be involved in clinic, community and hospital based surveillance and research for programmes/ projects that link with and fall under the GERMS-SA surveillance and syndromic surveillance programme. This includes syndromic pneumonia, diarrhoeal and acute febrile illness surveillance at certain sites.
Key Job Responsibilities

■National Diploma in Medical Technology or Biomedical Technology ■ HPCSA Registration as a Medical Technologist in Virology essential ■Four (4) years of post-qualification experience (of which two years should be in serological testing) ■Preparation of samples for examination ■Knowledge for the use of specialised instrumentation ■Accurate interpretation of results ■Accuracy and organisational skills ■Attention to detail ■Ability to identify problems and troubleshoot ■Ability to work independently and collaboratively ■Communication Skills (Verbal, written & presentation) ■Computer Literacy essential (Word/Excel) ■Good understanding of statistical methods for method validation ■Time management and evaluation Skills.
