KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:

Job description
- Responsible for logistics and operational issues, including the commissioning, maintenance, and operation of laboratory and pilot scale furnace facilities, in the Pyrometallurgy Division.
- Assisting in handling and processing of solid and molten materials in a safe and responsible manner.
- Prepare equipment and facilities for use and check the operability of standard equipment and facilities to ensure that they are ready for use, and must provide technical and procedural advice to staff on how to operate equipment, which equipment settings are the optimal, etc.
- General management and coordination of bulk sample storage areas (e.g. steel shed, bushed and other storage areas)
- Coordinating bulk deliveries, dispatch, and storage of bulk materials, including keeping updated inventories to allow effective retrieval.
- Coordinating housekeeping and maintaining bulk storage areas and materials to ensure materials are stored properly to avoid contamination and/or degradation.
- Undertaking preparation of bulk samples such as screening, blending, mixing, and drying as well as re-bagging
- Assisting in refractory lining of pilot furnaces and other general pilot facility preparation activities
- Coordinating the collection and delivery of required raw materials from storage to pilot bays for campaigns or test work, including coordinating the handling and tipping of products from ladles, separation of products, crushing to smaller lumps, bagging, weighing, and labelling during pilot campaigns.
- Contributing to continuous improvement efforts on infrastructure through standardization of procedures while delivering on performance against agreed metrics. This includes conducting detailed investigations into facility bottlenecks, understanding root causes, and establishing control measures to prevent reoccurrence.
- Providing technical support to internal and external clients to ascertain scope requirements and to timeously deliver on research and commercial projects, including supervision and training of O- and P-level operators, interns and contractors involved.
- Evaluating facilities, processes, systems, products, or new developments to identify opportunities and deficiencies to ensure continuous improvement.
- Conform to all relevant SHEQ procedures, guidelines, and rules, and ensure that relevant risks and hazards are identified and managed through Mintek-approved risk assessments and procedures. This includes ensuring that all relevant SOPs are up to date and complied with.

Provide technical expertise and guidance to the teams in areas of speciality and keep up-to-date with all technologies and business in the Group’s work. Ascertain needs and trends in the industry, develop, and execute appropriate research programmes to ensure long-term sustainability of the division by ensuring innovative and relevant R&D is undertaken aimed at producing new technologies in line with the division’s long-term plans and strengthening and expanding the technical abilities of the Group.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
o Leadership
o Live the Mintek values, foster a culture of collaboration within Mintek.
o Provide scientific leadership in specific discipline.

- Strategy
o Support the Division’s business development and commercialization leg and manage the execution of strategic programmes.
o Visibility and credibility – ensuring that publication outputs, including journal and conference papers, are met.
o Provide technical direction and mentoring to staff in the Group
o Monitoring and Evaluation of project milestones to motivate for further funding
o Financial Sustainability:
o Secure the Group’s Budget.
o Balance the RDI portfolio funding and targets as agreed.
o Ensure that there are effective inter Discipline collaborations and collaborations between Clusters to ensure that targets are met.
o Prepares large funding proposals to attract funding from a variety of sources to support the activities of the Group
o People and Planning
o Ensure that the core Group’s plans are aligned with Mintek’s strategy and the needs of the Division’s market.
o Ensure that adequate Divisional planning is done to ensure effective delivery of the plans.
o Ensure that the Group is adequately resourced, with a particular focus on SET staff and resources. Also ensuring succession planning.
o Drive the transformation agenda in the Group.
o Contribute to the refinement and development of the Divisional strategy and plans.
o Performance Management
o Deliver on the Group‘s KPIs.
o Undertake performance management for the Group.
o Ensure that systems and tools are in place to monitor and measure the delivery of RDI activities.
o Relationship management and reporting
o Stakeholder engagement, including the development of relationships with new stakeholders, stakeholder management and satisfaction for both internal and external stakeholders.
o Reporting on all RDI activities of the Group.
o Lead Co-development and Co-funding initiatives.
Minimum requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
o Masters degree in Chemical/Electrical/Electronics Engineering/Computer Science/Physics or relevant
o Ideal: PhD
o 8 - 10 years’ experience on the relevant field
