Job description
Mintek is South Africa’s national mineral research organisation and it is one of the world’s leading technology organisations with core competencies in mineral processing, hydrometallurgy, pyrometallurgy, bio-processing, mineralogical characterisation and assaying, measurement and process control, nanotechnology and advanced materials. These core competencies are supported by world-class and unique laboratory-, pilot- and demonstration-scale facilities such as minerals processing, smelting, heap leaching test-work, geo-mechanical and hydrodynamic testing, and cleanroom facilities.
 
The development of a capable workforce is at the core of Mintek’s Strategy 2030. Opportunity
The objectives of the Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Programme are to augment existing research capacity, build new areas of competence, and expand local and global research networks by:
  •      Providing a structured approach to fast-track the professional development of recently qualified doctoral graduates.
  •     Building a strong pipeline of outstanding researchers who are driven by a culture of research excellence and a passion for a new inquiry.
  •      Attracting researchers from diverse backgrounds, nationally and internationally.
 
Mintek is therefore inviting motivated and suitably qualified applicants who are interested in any of the areas of relevance to Mintek to apply for the positions of Postdoctoral Fellow. These opportunities are based in Randburg, South Africa. The successful candidates will be appointed on a three-year contract. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work with senior researchers and other ecosystem partners to conduct cutting-edge research that will advance the objectives of the organisation.
 
Focus areas:
Possible research areas include (but not limited to):
  • Focus on process solutions for impact areas of water and energy efficiency and reduction in circuits.
  • Novel technology evaluation for low grade and complex ore bodies.
  • Physical separation (gravity and magnetic separation) modelling of circuits with the aim to scale up laboratory data to pilot plants and commercial operations.
  • Modelling and simulation of comminution circuits and plant surveys data validation.
  • Investigate the effect of flotation reagents in the re-circulation of plant water.
  • Extraction and refining of technology and energy metals from primary and/or secondary sources; develop cutting-edge fundamental and applied research in high-temperature process metallurgy, metal extraction, and recycling.
  • Develop membrane electrode assembly (MEA) R&D which will lead to product development and manufacturing.
  • Develop an online instrumentation used for the measurement of residual xanthate concentrate ion directly from flotation concentrate cells.
  • Develop a fault detection and diagnosis system; analyse data collected from our clients, train machine learning and statistical models to detect faults, and convert them into formal prototypes. Python, MATLAB, C or C# programming experience is advantageous.
  • Financial modelling and valuations; financial monitoring; sensitivity analysis and techno-economic assessment.
  • Modelling of complex flow systems encountered along the mineral value chain using continuum (CFD) and particle scale (DEM) numerical techniques in conjunction with more modern approaches like continuum granular flow formulations.
  • Develop software tools and data models to improve the interpretation of mineralogical data (numerical, images).
 
Key responsibilities:
 The Postdoctoral Fellow will work under the direction of a senior researcher and is expected to carry out the following responsibilities:
  • Formulating ideas relating to technical projects, develop research questions, design experiments, identify problems, and evaluate and implement solutions.
  • Data collection, analysis, and modelling.
  • Presenting at high impact conferences nationally and internationally.
  • Participating in site visits, meetings, and workshops.
  • Producing high quality research publications (peer-reviewed articles, reports, book chapters, etc.)
  • Contributing towards the development of prototypes, processes, models, products
  • Writing research proposals.
  • Mentoring and supervising postgraduate students.
  • Building research collaborations nationally and internationally.
  • Contributing towards science engagement activities.
  • Supporting initiatives that promote the strategic goals and objectives of Mintek.
 
Qualifications
A doctorate in one of the fields below:

KEY PERFOMANCE INDICATORS:
 
Perform routine on allocated work.
  • Successfully performs fusion and dissolution procedures on allocated samples.
  • Perform analysis of the samples prepared by using techniques such as gravimetric analysis, AAS, ICP-OES, ICP-MS and Able to identify sample material according to matrix and apply appropriate analytical procedures.  
  • Perform high temperature fusion at fire assay to extract gold and precious elements and platinum group elements.
  • Adhere to turnaround times of the samples as per the group requirements.
  • Interacts (in consultation with supervisor) with chief investigators from metallurgical divisions regarding project requirements.
 
Maintains section’s technical competence.
  • Ensure that training is provided continuously by identifying training requirements, participating in training to obtain competence and maintaining it.
  • Use equipment appropriately to achieve desired quality results by performing qualitative and quantitatively of precious metal-containing materials.
  • Participate in annual competency test to maintain the learned skills.
  • Training the internship students and new personnel as required by the supervisor, the head or the executive manager.
  • Perform method development and method validations.
  • Must be able to work independently and flexibly and to adapt to changing priorities such as work standby and overtime.
  • Interpret data according to the set quality protocols and metallurgical recipes.
  • Write technical reports such as investigation reports, technical notes and method validation.
  • Performs major equipment troubleshooting reliably to solve faults or deviations.
  • Perform routine maintenance of instruments as per ACD SOPs and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Reports and discusses any anomalies and deviations observed on the methods, procedures and results with the group’s Technical Supervisor and Head.
  • Voluntarily presents informative technical topics at divisional general meetings.
  • Actively participates in technical discussions and makes informed suggestions.
  • Obtain and maintain the SANAS technical signatory status.
 
Participate in proficiency testing schemes
  • Actively participate in the PT scheme program when required.
  • Perform corrective action on PT scheme results that have not pass the requirements.
 
Adherence to SHEQ standards
  • Ensures that the samples are properly managed to reduce the risk of sample contamination, mix ups or misplacements.
  • Actively participates in SHEQ duties and attends all relevant meetings.
  • Practices Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) by ensuring that all work areas, balance rooms and the general laboratory are kept clean.
  • Strives to meet the objectives of the group by observing the quality, safety and environmental standards set out by the division.
  • Wearing of PPE at all times when performing allocated work.
 
Relationship management and reporting
  • Actively report to the Head of the group in all lab activities.
 
Minimum requirements
EXPERIENCE:
  • 3-5 year’s vocational experience following first graduation (BSc Hons or BTech or equivalent).
  • In-depth knowledge of analysis of inorganic samples by ICP-OES, ICP-MS, XRF and AAS
  • Minimum of 3 years working experience in ISO 17025 accredited laboratory.
  • In depth knowledge of fire assay processes including raw materials
  • Willing to work shift as required in projects
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Minimum: BTech or Postgraduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry or BSc degree in Chemistry
  • Ideal: BSc (Hons) Degree in Chemistry advantageous
  • Ideal: On-the-job training gained after graduation

Job description

The incumbent will work within the Minerals Processing Division and assume the responsibility to oversee and assist the execution of laboratory test work and pilot plant campaigns. KEY PERFOMANCE AREAS:
  • Assume the responsibility of Leader on selected MPD’s bench scale tests and pilot plant campaigns.
  • Assist with the construction, commissioning and operation of pilot plants and laboratory test equipment of either Flotation or Comminution Group.
  • Conduct laboratory experiments and participate in the execution of pilot plants.
  • Assist chief investigators to meet the technical objectives of projects and contribute to technical problem solving.
  • Train contract workers and operators in the safe and correct use of equipment and in the execution of laboratory and pilot plant-procedures.
  • Independently manage unit operations that form part of larger projects. This include planning, staffing, operation, quality control and reporting on those unit operations.
  • Perform basic calculations related to the execution of laboratory experiments and pilot plant operations.

  • Ensure that data are correctly logged and monitor the accuracy of data that are reported.
  • Ensure that all SHEQ matters are fully complied with at all times.
  • Ensure that equipment is used correctly and responsibly to avoid, or minimize, damage thereof.
 
QUALIFICATION AND JOB KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Bachelor’s Degree / BTech degree in Chemical Engineering / Extractive Metallurgy is required.
  • At least 2 years’ experience on the operation of relevant MPD unit operations such as sample preparation, comminution bench scale tests, milling circuits, operation of crushers flotation processes or more than 10 years broad-based experience across in a MPD processing environment.
