The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the Biometallurgy Division is managed in a manner that delivers sustainably on its mandate, including strategic and operational plans: • To lead the Division technically, including developing the Division’s RDI strategy. • To ensure the alignment of the Division strategy and plans with those of the Mintek strategy. • To maintain a balanced Divisional RDI portfolio. • To prepare and implement operational and business plans for the Division. • To lead stakeholder engagements with industry, HEI’s, public sector and international entities. • To be accountable for the Division’s sustainability, including financial, human resources, SHEQ, risks and delivery.
 
Job description
LEADERSHIP
  • Ethical leadership
  • Stakeholder relations management to ensure that cooperation is obtained in fulfilling the Division’s mandate. 
  • Ensure the alignment of the divisional strategy with Mintek’s mandate and the strategies of external stakeholders e.g. government departments.
STRATEGY
  • Ensure that all the activities undertaken by Biometallurgy Division support the beneficiation aspect of the overall Mintek strategy.
PEOPLE AND PLANNING
  • Ensure that the necessary resources are allocated to all the activities required to give effect to the strategy and the activities in the Division.
  • Ensure that the competent talent required in the department is retained through clear career paths.
  • Ensure that there is an adequate pipeline of commercial and business leads to ensure that the Division can deliver on its targets.
  • Contribute to the refinement and development of the Cluster strategy and plans.
MARKETING
  • Ensure that there is a divisional marketing plan in place, which identifies the market requirements and match these to technologies developed in the division.
  • Ensure publications in peer-reviewed journals and participation in conferences, symposia to market the division’s technologies and skills.
  • Maintain national and international collaboration with research networks.
  • Seek out opportunities to commercialize research outcomes.
GOVERNANCE
  • Risk profiling and ensure compliance to the ISO Standards and Regulations.
  • Adhere to all Mintek’s policies and ethics.
FINANCIAL SUSTAINABILITY
  • Drive the Division’s financial sustainability through effective operations.
  • Balance the RDI portfolio funding and commercial targets as agreed in the Division.
  • Ensure that the Division revenue streams are diverse.
RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT 
  • Develop and maintain sound relationships with stakeholders to remain globally relevant.
  • Take responsibility for commercialisation and technology transfer management for the Division.

Minimum requirements
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Ideal: PhD in relevant field of science related to the divisional activities, preferably Chemical/Metallurgical engineering, Biohydrometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Bioprocessing or Biotechnology.
  • Minimum: Master’s degree in Chemical/Metallurgical engineering, Biohydrometallurgy, Hydrometallurgy, Bioprocessing or Biotechnology
  • At least 10 years’ experience in the field of which 5 years must be in a research management position.
  • Experience in financial, HR, business processes, marketing, operations, and business development.
  • Experience in business engagements and commercialization activities.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, good management and leadership skills, self-driven, people skills and strategic thinking.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS 
PREVENTIVE MAINTENACE ACTIVITIES
  • Execute planned maintenance inspections on plant and equipment
  • Compile reports on the status of inspected equipment
  • Submit report with recommendations to Superintendent
  • Identify resources required to execute required maintenance
  • Plan execution of recommended maintenance activities
  • Execute planned maintenance as per plan.
  • Report back to Superintendent on completed work
REACTIVE MAINTENANCE
  • Respond to breakdown of equipment and plant

  • Repair failed equipment or plant and commission
PROJECTS
  • Using plumbing work theories and experience design simple wooden fixtures and structures (such as cabinets and tables) as requested by internal clients

  • Commission simple installations and fixtures
OTHER
  • Perform risk assessment before carrying out work
  • Supervise subordinates and ensure they work safely

Introduction
Mintek is seeking an individual who will be responsible for producing detailed mine rehabilitation designs, structural designs, specifications and construction drawings of large, multi-million rands infrastructure and D&O projects that involve the rehabilitation of ownerless and derelict mines. The incumbent will also be expected to assist with construction project management and oversee construction monitoring.
 
Job description
Design and Documentation:
  • Prepare detailed mine rehabilitation designs including the production of construction drawings, and specifications for all applicable works ensuring that all documents accurately capture the nature, size and scope of the project.
  • Project initiation including desktop studies and site investigations to produce scoping reports.
  • Conducting pre-feasibility studies and community engagement
  • Manage specialist sub-consultants like geotechnical specialists, surveyors etc.
  • Sign-off rehabilitated mines
  • Undertake technical reviews / audits to ensure that designs are in accordance with project / study requirements and company objectives and are produced in a timely and cost-effective manner.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to less experienced staff, junior engineers and interns to increase technical competence.
 
Construction Supervision:
  • Full contract management of the allocated projects
  • Address any on-site deviations to the scope, designs and specifications with the Head of unit.
  • Conduct key milestone onsite inspections and approve site quality tests.
  • Attend Progress Meetings and arrange and facilitate technical/coordination meetings.
 
Project Coordination:
  • Coordinate the execution of projects to ensure that the outputs / outcomes are in line with Mintek’s strategies and goals.
  • Manage and assess all project documents submitted by contractors, including designs, scoping documents, bills of quantity, and budgets.
  • Proactively manage tasks and activities to ensure that problems and delays are identified early, and remedial action is instituted to minimise consequences.
  • Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
  • Compile weekly project progress and financial reports.
  • Assist Project Manager in compiling quarterly reports for submission to DMR.
 
Stakeholder Management:
  • Interact with key stakeholders to understand, anticipate and manage their expectations.
  • Manage relations between the contractors and mining communities, ensuring that potential areas are managed or escalated to the client accordingly.
 
SHEQ management:
  • Ensure that effective SHEQ procedures are in place so that contractors and workers operate in a safe and healthy environment.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable legislation at all sites where Mintek is operating including Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Undertake risk assessments for own projects and review and approve contractor’s monthly SHEQ reports.
 
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Knowledge of the public sector or mining industry
  • Strong project management and business development skills are required.
  • 10 years’ experience in the design and project management of civil engineering heavy, earthworks, structures and mine rehabilitation and closure
  • Nature of experience:
- Extensive Civil and Structural Engineering design, contract documentation and management.

QUALIFICATIONS:
