Mintek has an exciting career opportunity that exists for a Senior Engineer: Physical Separation Group. The Mineral Processing Division is seeking for an incumbent who will be responsible for executing and managing research, and commercial projects, writing journal and conference papers.
 
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
  • Design, plan, conduct and co-ordinate research projects.
  • Execute metallurgical test work.
  • Interact with stakeholders (researchers and clients) at a technical level.
  • Manage and control finances of the research and commercial projects.
  • Undertake and co-ordinate test work and communicate results to relevant stakeholders (government (e.g. MTEF), researchers (e.g. EU) and clients that are funding the project work.
  • Supervise and co-ordinate the activities of subordinate staff, to ensure that service of a high standard is rendered to clients, at full cost recovery.
  • Provide technical and practical guidance in the execution of experiments.
 
Minimum requirements
JOB KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
  • 5 years' experience in physical separation studies/projects is a necessity.
  • Experience in research and development of physical separation projects is a requirement.
  • Willingness to study, grow and be an expert in the field.
  • Team player who enjoys variation in tasks and has a passion for minerals processing.
  • An affinity for planning and conducting new and innovative projects is essential.
 
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must possess an MSc (Eng) degree in Chemical/Metallurgical engineering. PhD will be an advantage.
  • Professional registration and voluntary association membership will be an advantage.

The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring that the Discipline is managed in a manner that delivers sustainably on its mandate, including strategic and operational plans: - To lead the Discipline technically including the development of the Discipline RDI strategy. - To ensure the alignment of the Discipline strategy and plans with those of Mintek. - To maintain a balanced Discipline RDI portfolio - To prepare operational and business plans for the Discipline and integrate them into the plans for the Cluster. - To ensure the optimal use of resources within the Discipline and shared services within the Cluster and within other Clusters. - To lead stakeholder engagements with industry, HEI’s, public sector and international entities. - To be accountable for the Discipline sustainability, including financial, human resources, SHEQ, risks and delivery. - To be accountable for the impact of the Discipline in terms of Mintek’s mandate. - To be accountable for the performance and management of the Discipline. - To ensure that the internal state grant funding is effectively invested and leveraged to maximise impact in terms of strategic goals, leveraging of funding and commercial impact
 
Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS 
Leadership 
o    Live the Mintek Values, foster a culture of collaboration within Mintek.
 
Strategy
o   Drive the Discipline RDI strategy and operations, and develop plans for the implementation of the strategy.
o   Support the Discipline business development and commercialisation and manage the execution of the strategic programmes.
 
Financial Sustainability
o   Secure the Discipline Budget.
o   Balance the RDI portfolio Funding and commercial targets as agreed.
o   Ensure that there are effective inter Discipline collaborations between Clusters to ensure that targets are met.
 
People and Planning
o   Ensure that the core RDI Discipline plans are aligned with Mintek’s strategy and the needs of the Cluster market.
o   Ensure that adequate Discipline planning is done to ensure effective delivery of the plans.
o   Ensure that there is an adequate pipeline of commercial and business leads to ensure that the Discipline can deliver on its targets.
o   Ensure that the Discipline is adequately resourced, with a particular focus on SET staff and resources.  Also ensuring succession planning.
o   Drive the transformation agenda in the Discipline.
o   Contribute to the refinement and development of the Cluster strategy and plans.
 
Performance Management
  • Deliver on the Discipline KPI’s.
  • Undertake performance management for the Discipline.
  • Ensure that systems and tools are in place to monitor and measure the delivery of RDI activities.
 
Governance and Risk Management
  • Risk profiling and mitigation activities for the Discipline’s activities, including SHEQ.
  •  Adhere to all Mintek’s policies and ethics.
Relationship Management and Reporting
  • Stakeholder engagement, including the development of relationships with new stakeholders, stakeholder management and satisfaction for both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Reporting on all RDI activities in the Discipline.
  • Commercialisation and technology transfer management for the Discipline.
  • Lead Co-development and Co-funding initiatives.
Minimum requirements
 
QUALIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Minimum: Master’s Degree in Science or Engineering
  • Ideal:  PhD in a relevant scientific field relating to the Discipline (Engineering or Science).
  • At least 10 years’ experience in a research or knowledge based organisations undertaking research in the Discipline.
  • Of which 5 years must be in a research management position.
  • Experience in financial, HR, business processes, marketing, operations and business development.
  • Experience in business engagements and commercialisation activities

The candidate must execute workshop and plant activities towards the establishment and maintenance of pilot plants, laboratory apparatus and client products, as per prescribed designs, engineering drawings and / or plant measurements. Job description
 Assembly Fitter, Turning and Milling
  • Manufacture, modify and erect pilot plants/laboratory apparatus / client products or parts thereof as per detailed engineering drawings.
  • Manufacture, modify, repair and assembly mechanical equipment and components on machinery as requested.
  • Provide fitting and machining skills support during commissioning of test facilities or client products in accordance with project or task.
  • Test individual components or plant as per prescribed procedures to ensure that the overall plant function is achieved.
  • Execute quality control plant as per task and standards applicable to the task at hand – e.g. machining to close tolerances.
Interpretation of engineering drawings
  • Plan machining requirements for a job based on engineering drawings.
  • Assist Supervisor with QA / QC inspections.
  • Inspecting subcontractor’s workmanship (where sub-contractor work is applicable).
Safety
  • Perform risk assessments for every task assigned (HIRA).
  • Take control of the workmanship and safety of trade workers / operators under his control.
  • Ensure that Mintek’s safety standards and procedures are sustained with regard to machinery and to uphold prescribed safety standard procedures in his wokspace.
  • Recommend improved work practices and amendments to procedures affecting workmanship and safety matters.
  • Assist the supervisor with performing Safety inspection.
 
Execution of workshop and plant activities
  • Set machines and manufacture to quality standards.
  • Machine components as per engineering drawing requirements.
  • Precision marking out and measurement of work pieces using Vernier calipers, height gauges and micrometers.
  • Machining and cutting of materials using lather machines, milling machines and power saws.
  • General welding, screw cutting, drilling and taping of holes.
  • Use hand held power tools (e.g. drill, angle grinder) to manufacture items.
  • Structural and component assemblies.
 
Minimum requirements
  • Grade 12 / N3
  • Fitter and Trade Certificate
  • Training - 5 years on the job training
