Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
  • Assist Head/Divisional manager to maintain and expand on project work from the mining/ metallurgical industry and related research agencies, in line with Division’s current business plans, by providing competence and professional expertise, and interacting with clients, collaborators and potential partners.
  • Ascertain needs of clients and the industry and propose appropriate project work, both research and commercial oriented. Identify opportunities for innovation and commercialisation.
  • Lead and execute projects in which interactions with stakeholders (internal and external) are required at an advanced level of technical expertise. This will involve algorithm/software development to extract appropriate information, and modelling, simulation and interpretation of mineral behaviour in processing and other environments using, primarily, mineralogical inputs.
  • Train, and technically mentor the staff in the group, so as to improve technical quality and turnaround times, and promote innovative outcomes, thus enhancing the value proposition of the group to clients and collaborators.
  • Execute projects so as to meet the time scheduling agreed to with client/stakeholder, contain costs for the Division and deliver valid conclusions with technical efficiency and professionalism.
  • Comply with the internal administration requirements of Mintek and the Mineralogy Division with respect to labour and machine time capture, business governance, professional reporting, project planning and management.
  • Develop protocols/workflows for optimal operation and performance of specialised imaging equipment.
  • Ensure that QES procedures are followed, and project work is executed to produce valid conclusions and with maximum overall efficiency - technically and financially.
  • Ensure that the documentation of work and procedures is appropriately captured and produce advanced professional level reports, publications, and conference contributions.
 
Minimum requirements

Job description
KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:
  • He/she is aware of trends in the relevant field, and is able to formulate ideas relating to technical projects, frame and develop research questions, design experiments, identify problems, and evaluate and implement solutions.
  • Play a leading role in the execution of work as a chief investigator of projects, within the division/group.
  • Operational: Establish specifications, improve workflows, and introduce operating procedures – at the project level.
 
·      Commercial
·         Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision to Client satisfaction.
·       Design, operate and oversee discipline specific experimental work as required by Proposals and ensure that procedures are complied with, and quality control and continual improvement are applied.
·       Collect and interpret data at a quantitative and qualitative level using discipline specific standard methodologies and procedures. Including the preparation of analytical and descriptive narratives.  Ensure that the interpretation is based on sound scientific / engineering theory.
·       Plan and manage projects to ensure efficient use of time, equipment and facilities, including coordinating with others.
·       Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies, promote continual improvement in the workplace, adhere to and enforce all SHEQ requirements.
·       Ensure that the project team understands and adheres to all SHEQ requirements
·       As a Principal Investigator, responsible for the assessment and management of all risks at a project level.
·       Take responsible for specific equipment / facilities related to projects.
·            Research and Development
·         Prepare proposals under direct/limited supervision, including Open Call proposals.
·       Perform routine scientific and engineering research using standard methods, procedures and equipment. Act as a principal investigator on such projects.
·       Perform complex scientific and engineering research under supervision.
·       Contributor to IP development.
 
Minimum requirements
·       Min: MSc preceded by BSc and BSc(Hons) in biological sciences or relevant.
·       At least 3 – 5 years vocational experience following first graduation, in Bioprocessing, Biometallurgy, Biotechnology or relevant.
·       Substantial expertise in molecular biology methods for microbial cultivation and speciation of mixed cultures with demonstrable skills in methods development
·       Exposure to, and an understanding of bioprocesses, especially bioleaching.
·       Exposure to and an understanding of, mine water and waste challenges, treatment and value recovery.
·       Ideal: experience with cloning, (q)PCR, ligation, DNA sequence analysis and other advanced molecular tools

ADMINISTRATION
  • Assisting in the preparation of board and committee meetings (e.g., scheduling, sending notices, and preparing agendas).
  • Taking minutes during meetings and ensuring accurate records of discussions and decisions.
  • Distributing meeting materials and ensuring board members have the necessary documentation.
  • Ensure that all purchase, service requisitions and store items are correct before processing on IFS.  Follow-up with buying on progress.
  • Responsible for travel and accommodation bookings.
  • Liaise with the Finance Division on the processing of S&T allowances, and advances.
  • Organise quotes and do requisitions for all consumables and assets.
  • Perform Secretarial duties for Executive Managers and the Board of Directors.
  • Assist in drafting accurate and professional reports.
  • Coordinate and organise board-related external and internal events ensuring all logistics are seamlessly executed.
  • Undertake any ad hoc duties.
COMPLIANCE

MAINTAIN ASSET REGISTER FOR THE CLUSTER
