DIRECTORATE FOR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND DEVELOPMENT (CEAD)
POSTDOCTORAL RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP
(Participatory design for climate change adaptation)
One-Year Fixed Contract
 
Key Performance Areas:
• Initiate and conduct community-based participatory action research.
• Facilitate participatory design circles for climate change adaptation.
• Co-ordinate sustainable smart agricultural practices and climate modelling.
• Transform qualitative and quantitative data into publishable materials.
• Monitor and evaluate research projects.
• Communicate science through various methods.
• Engage strategic stakeholders such as Indigenous Local Knowledge keepers (ILEK) for climate smart agricultural practices.
• Present the research project in relevant platforms such as conferences, colloquia, symposia, seminars etc to strengthen research findings.
• Ability to publish manuscripts (review and research) in accredited journals and peer reviewed conference proceedings.
• Write reports on progress regarding the research project.
• Draft grant applications to broaden the research.
• Co-supervise relevant postgraduate research and/or collaborate with researchers on the subject of climate change.
• Initiate, develop and/or be involved in research collaborations and networking for joint ventures.
 
Minimum Requirements:
• A recently earned PhD (within the last five years) in climate change adaptation studies, such as Environmental Management studies; Agricultural Economics and/or Extension (but focusing more on sustainability); Development studies; or any other climate change adaptation and mitigation related areas.
• South African citizens or permanent residents will be prioritised.
• International Postdoctoral Research Fellows must have a long-term visitor’s visa endorsed for academic activities affiliated with MUT (Section 11(1)(b) Visitors Visa).
• A solid knowledge of climate change adaptation and ILEK systems
• At least 2 published articles in the last two years (24 months) in accredited journals
• Working knowledge and experience with analytical software, such as Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), Stata and Statistical Analysis System (SAS).
• Has not held full-time permanent academic or professional employment.
 
Recommendations:
• Track record of, and passion for community development.
• Experience in postgraduate student mentorship will be an advantage.
• Knowledge of local language will be an added advantage.
• Knowledge of climate-related software will be an added advantage.
 
Competencies:
• Literature review
• Computer literacy
• Ability to work independently or with minimum supervision.
• Knowledge of writing for publication
• Skilled in identifying accredited journals for publications.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Ability to interpret climate change-related and social sciences data.
• Good organizational skills
 
 
Stipend: R300 000.00 per annum (tax-exempt)

FACULTY OF ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
LECTURER (P8) – Ref: UR03
(One-Year Fixed Term Contract)
 
Key Performance Areas:
• Teaching & conducting practical sessions.
• Identifying and specifying modern technical lab equipment and developing Lab manuals, course notes & assessing academic students’ work at Diploma & higher levels.
• Development of curriculum to align with 4IR international trends.
• Academic student support through progress monitoring & identifying “at risk” students timeously & developing intervention strategies.
• Enforcing the Occupational Health & Safety Act regulations.
• Continuous professional development through keeping abreast with latest developments in Electronic/Communications Engineering.
• Conduct appropriate research, publish results & initiate new research areas in the Department and keep abreast of professional literature.
• Foster team spirit and collaborate with others.
• Contribute to community engagement initiatives, liaise with industry, & facilitate cooperative education initiates, form industrial alliances & partnerships.
• Perform other duties delegated by the HOD.
 
Minimum Requirements:
• Master’s degree (Electrical Engineering with specialization in Power Engineering). The basic qualification should be BTech/BEng/BSc in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• At least three (3) years relevant post qualification University lecturing experience.
• Evidence of research experience.
 
Recommendations:
• Evidence of on-going research work at a Doctoral level.
 
Competencies:
• Excellent communication and presentation skills.
• Good technical or professional knowledge and skills on Learning Management System.
• Collegiality, ability to work independently and in a team.
• Good organizational skills and continuous learning.
• Advanced IT computer literacy and demonstrable skills and initiative at embracing technology in teaching and learning.
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
• Coaching and learners focus to develop hands on skills in student practical’s.
 
 
Salary Scale: R464 880.00 – R717 852.00 (P8) basic salary per annum. No benefits

Key Performance Areas:
• Lecturing and assessment of students
• Perform academic administrative duties.
• Contribute to the research undertaken by and within the department and the faculty.
• Liaise with industries and community.
• Participating in curriculum development focused on implementation of the application of engineering knowledge · Develop learning materials.
• Participate in community – based projects within the field of Engineering.
• Perform other duties delegated by the HOD.
 
Minimum Requirements:
• A Master’s Qualification in Mechanical Engineering with a bachelor’s qualification in the same field.
• Three (3) years lecturing experience.
• Evidence of research experience.
 
Recommendations:
• Registration for a Doctoral Degree in Mechanical will be a strong advantage.
• Registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA)
• Experience in the use of appropriate Engineering Drawing software
