PROPAGATOR (X1 PERMANENT)
(R489, 968. 06 - R602, 288. 26 per annum)
Job Purpose:
To propagate and nurtures plants for the Urban Forestry department in line with the 5-to-10-year propagation plan and apply knowledge of environmental controls and plant culture
Minimum Requirements:
- National Diploma in Horticulture or relevant qualification in natural sciences, conservation management, horticultural/environmental management or NQF Level 7 equivalent qualification National Diploma in Horticulture
- At least 5 years of experience working within natural sciences, conservation, horticultural/ environmental management or related field and 2 years of experience in a supervisory position
- Demonstrated experience working within a natural sciences, conservation, horticultural, environmental management or agriculture environment
- Relevant horticulture, landscaping or similar course – (advantageous)
- Demonstrated experience of working in a nursery – (advantageous)
Key Performance Areas:
- Work with the Senior Horticulturist to implement a 5-to-10-year propagation plan.
- Improves the quality, health and survival rates of newly propagated plants.
- Maintains records of newly propagated plants.
- Propagates plants, according to the propagation plan and standards and procedures for gardens and display purposes.
- Confers with superior to ascertain type and number of species to propagate, develop and revise nutrient formulas and environmental-control specifications for
- Selects materials according to kind of plant, mixes growth media and prepares containers, such as jars, pots, and trays
- Initiates new plant growth, using methods such as following: cutting leaves, stems, or rhizomes from parent plant and places cuttings in growth media
- Bends, covers, or buries branches of parent plant in soil, securing branches with pegs or rocks
- Wounds stems of parent plant, using sharp knife, inserts pebble into wound, and binds wound with moss, burlap, or raffia
- Plants meristem and seeds in growth media
- Breaks off or cuts apart and plants roots, crowns, and tubers from parent plant
- Inspects growing area to ascertain temperature and humidity conditions, and regulates systems of heaters, fans, and sprayers to ensure conformance with specifications
- Provides transplanting and cultivation instructions to co-workers, and monitors activities to assure adherence to established plant-culture procedures
- May graft or divide developing plants to promote altered growth characteristics
- Ensures plant irrigation system is in working condition (if applicable)
- Ensures correct signage of various plants, May log activities as required
- Maintains propagation records and compiles information as requested
- Actively participates and manages own performance levels
- Ensures regular one-on-one meetings are requested with the Senior Horticulturist to discuss progress of individual areas of accountability
- Respond politely to public enquires if encountered and refers to supervisor as required
- Implements and monitors JCPZ safety, health, environmental and security policies and procedures
- Implements identified risk mitigation measures
- Ensures compliance of Department through policy and procedure adherence
- Performs other related duties in line with function as and when required

HEAD GARDENER X2 (PERMANENT)
Salary: (R17,314.77 - R23,373.84)
Job purpose
Supervise Arboriculture/Horticulture teams to ensure completion of scheduled maintenance tasks as directed by Senior Arboriculturist/ Horticulturalist according to Standard Operating Procedures. Ensure compliance with SHEQ standards in daily activities. Organize necessary machinery and tools for the team, transport them to the worksite, and supervise the execution and completion of required activities.
Job Requirements
- Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
- Basic Knowledge of Landscaping/Horticulture/Arboriculture
- Proven experience in transporting teams or individuals using heavy vehicles such as trucks or tractors. Knowledge of SHEQ requirements
- 1 years’ experience in the supervisory level (Horticultural/ Arboriculture field)
- Valid SA driver’s license Code 10 & Valid PDP. Code 14 drivers’ license - added advantage
Key performance areas
- To supervise the teams so that required activities are executed as per Standard Operating Procedures.
- Co-ordinate completion of job cards as per direction from the Senior Arboriculturist/ Horticulturalist, including scheduled maintenance and customer complaints.
- Support the Senior Arboriculturist/ Horticulturalist with inspections.
- Support Senior Arboriculturist/ Horticulturalist & check daily complaints & queries from all stakeholders.
- Check equipment are in working order and transport it to the worksite
- Work cohesively with the team to ensure completion of required tasks
- Report any safety and environmental incidents on site and infrastructure issues
- Report to the Senior Arboriculturist/ Horticulturalist on team performance and job card status
- Comply with SHE-Q requirements and JCPZ policies when conducting work
Knowledge & Skills
- Advanced/ Safe driving skills driving heavy vehicles i.e. truck/tractor/bus
- Excellent sense of navigation, Performance supervision & control skills
- Experience on Machine operations for horticultural/arboriculture machinery
- Knowledge and application of propagation of plants
- Good understanding of SHERQ requirements and the applications to horticulture/arboriculture

CONSERVATOR (X1 PERMANENT)

JOB PURPOSE:
To maintain biodiversity within the city of Johannesburg, bird sanctuaries and nature reserves in order to preserve and maintain a sustainable ecological environment; to manage team on the ground and ensure areas are well maintained and protected.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- National Diploma/Degree in Nature Conservation or related field or equivalent NQF level 6 qualification
- Code AB /Public Driver’s License
- 2 Years of Experience in Conservation management or related field
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Executes veld condition assessments
- Executes the rehabilitations of proclaimed protected areas
- Executes the alien plants control management plan
- Implements indigenous tree planting programs
- Execute Conservation maintenance in all Protected Areas
- Implements and monitor fire management-cutting and burning fire breaks
- Ensure maintenance of all fences, roads and trails
- Ensuring maintenance of vehicles and inspections
- Oversees eradication of alien invasive plants and problem animals’ control
- Liaises and communicates with facilities management for technical maintenance and repairs
- Conducts the planning, implementing and maintenance of high and ethical standards of animal husbandry in Protected Areas
- Conducts the formulation of and implementation of species management plans
- Ensures compliance to environmental legislation and other applicable acts, policies and regulations
- Plans strategically and operationally for project, complete with the demarcating of the areas, contractor training and evaluation and reporting
- Ensures selection of good genetics by using criteria for excellent physical characteristics
- Prevent inbreeding as required by making use of good record keeping and very good identification techniques
- Supervise day to day attendance of staff and escalate managers where necessary
- Supervise performance, grievances and disciplinary issues of staff
- Outline expected deliveries and measures
- Contribute to team effectiveness and team cohesion
- Hold team members accountable for individual performance
