ANIMAL KEEPER (REPTILES)
(PERMANENT)
(BASIC SALARY: R17 580.78 — R23 032.91 P/M)
 
 
EDUCATIONAL: • Diploma in Nature Conservation or Relevant Degree or NQF level 6 equivalent.
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: - Comprehensive knowledge of relevant animals • Computer literacy - Code B Drivers License • Physically fit to do the job.
 
EXPERIENCE: • Snake Handling Certificate and having worked with venomous snakes for more than a year • Knowledge of liaising with animals - Legal knowledge and requirements for the industry e.g. Permits • Hand rearing knowledge – Problem solving capacity • Animal capturing and translocation experience - At least 3 years in animal husbandry or related conservation field.
 
High Level Objectives: - Plans and manages sub-section • Ensures high standards of animal husbandry • Ensures adherence to all regulatory bodies – Executes supervisory responsibilities 
• Optimises individual and team performance • Manages own performance and development • Communicates appropriately with public - Implements  and adheres to SHEQ standards and security monitoring • Manages risk and ensures enclosures are maintained • Conducts daily observations and ensures accurate record keeping and reporting - Assists in the enrichment of animal lives, research and education awareness initiative.

Duties/Activities: - Implementing policies and procedures in relevant competency - Maintain high standard of animal husbandry • Ensure the caring and training of animals as well as their welfare and health • Operate and maintain life support system or water bodies • Ensure that animals are fed the correct food and amount • Carry out water test and maintain optimal water quality • Perform daily enclosure maintenance • Order material and equipments needed on sub section • Assist with nutritional evaluation of the diets of the animals on section • Perform in the hand rearing of new born animals if and when needed • Night duties and irregular shifts when required • Perform daily animal observation and recording of observation • Ensure all record keeping and reporting procedures are complied with • Identify and report any abnormal behavior of incidents to Curator and to the Veterinarian on duty and regularly update and implement the plans • Ensure that the animals in your care are content and healthy at all times - Conduct an animal census daily of the animals in sub section • Identify and collect suitable browse for the species of animal that is required in your section • Implement the operation of captivity breeding programs • Assist in management of studbook according to the international standards - Develop and implement the collection plan, animal acquisition, disposition and sale of animals - Assist with veterinarian procedures and treatments when required • Collect faecal samples and administer of medication • Be able to work over the weekend for day in lieu.
