LIGHTING TECHNICIAN
 
The Joburg City Theatres (JCT), an entity of the City of Johannesburg that stimulates and
operates Joburg Theatre, Roodepoort Theatre and Soweto Theatre in order provide the integrated management of theatre is seeking a skilled and experienced Lighting Technician to join the JCT Team.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Grade 12 or equivalent.
• 3 years’ experience working g with light equipment (e.g. spotlights, dimmers, consoles), preferably in theatre environment or similar
• Ability to program and operate complex lighting consoles and related equipment, wiring and patching of lighting fixtures.
• Ability to interpret lighting designs and stage plan/ layout.
• Knowledge of lighting design software such as AUTO-CAD, VECTORWORKS or WYSIWYG.
• Good understanding of audiovisual (AV)
• Computer literate
 
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for setting up live performances, operating, and maintaining lighting equipment, building sets, managing props and costumes, ensuring safety, and potentially designing or assisting with lighting plans.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Inspect hanging lighting and audiovisual gear and ensure the safety of personnel and patrons
• Ensure all equipment relates to lighting and audiovisuals are in good repair.
• Ensure that no tripping, slipping, falling or any other hazard is created as a direct or indirect result of lighting
• Report and replace faulty equipment and make recommendations to the Technical Manager and Senior Lighting Technician to acquire new equipment when necessary
• Report all mechanical faults to the Line Manager and maintenance department and ensure that they are rectified by following up.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify any cause of problems and defects
• Always apply and uphold safety practices outside of your immediate department
• Interpret, coordinate, and implement lighting design according to client specifications
• Supervise visiting and training adhocs Lighting Technicians crew with rigging, focusing, and wiring of the lighting system.
• Train and monitor adhocs Lighting Technicians to program lighting consoles and other devices.
• Maintain equipment, materials, tools, and supplies used in technical production and basic set design
• Ensure all lighting equipment is correctly barcoded and located in the correct area.
• Provide production information to supervisors, co-workers, and subordinates
• Perform routine maintenance functions such as replacing lamps and damaged Colour filters or pattern
• Maintain lighting equipment in safe working conditions
• Ensure that no tripping, slipping, falling or any other hazard is created as a direct or indirect result of lighting and audio-visual equipment
 
Leading Competencies:
• Experience with rigging and working at heights.
• Must be able to work extended hours
• Be able to communicate effectively in English
 
Core Competencies:
• Strong technical knowledge of lighting equipment,
• Ability to interpret lighting designs,
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
• They must also be able to work under pressure, solve problems, and maintain and troubleshoot equipment.
• Additionally, a good lighting technician possesses physical stamina, attention to detail, and an understanding of safety procedures. Ability to interpret lighting designs and stage plan/ layout.
• Knowledge of stage rigging techniques and safety protocols

Salary : R15,872.78 (Basic Salary Excluding Benefits
 
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Grade 12 (NQF Level 4) or an equivalent qualification
• 1 year experience working in a venue theatre technical department or similar department
• Knowledge of basic carpentry, stagecraft etc.
• Ability to lift, carry and move equipment and materials
• Ability to work under pressure.
• Teamwork and communication skills
• Attention to details and safety.
• Flexibility and adaptability
• Computer Literacy is an added advantage.
 
PRIMARY FUNCTION
Responsible for the physical setup of live performances. They’re involved in everything from building sets to rigging lighting and sound equipment, to managing props and costumes.
 
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist with production move-in-and-out as it relates to props and scenery.
• Assist with the loading and offloading of trucks.
• Set up scenery and build sets.
• Perform (basic) repair functions related to stage equipment.
• Serve as Stage Crew on all in-house productions and co-productions.
• Operate any stage equipment within the theatre when needed.
• Interpret Stage design and implement.
• Keeping up-to-date technically and applying knowledge to the job.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
• Study the script and consult with the director to assess what is required.
• Ensure general cleanliness on the stage, side stages and other facilities and for production.
• Ensure that no hazards exist on Stage Set up and operate Stage equipment.
• Ensure safety cables are attached to all hanging gear.
• Ensure that scenery bars are in good working order and meet the required safety standards.
